LIKENESS - a crowdfunding project

Hello Eden Park Rangers and Internet, 

I’m here to tell you about an exciting upcoming short film that I’m helping to crowdfund called LIKENESS. Directed by the wonder Emily Diana Ruth, produced by the brilliant Jamie Miller and starring the incomparable Laura Spencer.  Likeness is about a young woman who is forced to confront her mother’s early signs of Alzheimer’s, and I’m not going to give too much of the plot away, but it handles this story in a way that helps us not be scared. 

The film is a little over half way funded with just a few days to go, and we’ve unleashed some mega perks today that we think will be of interest to all of you! 

Lizzie Bennet Diaries fans can donate $100 and receive one (in a very limited run) signed copy of Pride and Prejudice by the main cast! 

Also, if we can make it to $30k, we’ll produce a special spinoff starring Jane, in which she teaches you how to make her world-famous snickerdoodles! So, every little bit helps!

Hey guys! Long time no see, thought I’d update you with a project I’m working on that you might be interested in. 

This new dip into crowdfunding is being manned by my dear friends Emily Diana Ruth and Jamie Miller who I first started working with on COLD last year!

LIKENESS is a short film by these amazing women and the very talented Laura Spencer -yes that Laura Spencer (Big Bang Theory, Lizzie Bennet Diaries) exploring the mind of a woman suffering from Alzheimer's and how the disease brings her closer to her daughter. It is a visual depiction of her state of mind as she travels back in time, unearthing long buried memories.

I read the script and I just fell in love with it. As someone who's had Alzheimer’s run in his family, this project is incredibly dear to my hear. I'm honored that Emily asked me to help run the campaign, and I'd really love it if you guys checked out what the indiegogo has to offer, and hopefully these will be the first steps into making this a full-blown series.

In this interactive webseries, players have 24 hours to save a small town and possibly the world from a ghostly fate.

Cloudburst will be a community-driven experience, unfolding in real time and featuring new forms of storytelling across different media, with unique ways for the audience to influence the outcome such as Paranormal Activity-style found-footage, liveblogging escape-the-room style vignettes, audio logs, and various social media platform integration. Viewers can watch passively, or become an integral part of the story as they befriend our characters and help Riley confront the ghosts of her past and the literal ghosts of Eden Park.

Cloudburst and its predecessor Escape From Eden Park are inspired by past webseries and alternate reality games such as lonelygirl15, Maddison Atkins, Kate Modern, Harper’s Globe, and The Optimist. Our cast has featured creators and influencers of digital storytelling and media from all over the world, such as composer Jordan Bush, who is also our featured composer (LG15:Outbreak),  Linda Barsi (Buzzfeed, OpenEllby), Rob Carballo (geekbeatradio), Michael J. I know you have Pride Week and Prejudice but have you ever considered a project like that involving other Austen novels? After watching Emma Approved, I feel like they missed a great opportunity to adapt Frank and Jane into Frank and James. Thoughts?

Yes, I have considered it! I’m always thinking of more than I announce.

 My friend Hayley wanted to do a radio adaption of Sense and Sensibility called Sense and Sensibility and Lesbians pretty passionately for about a week before forgetting that she had ever come up with it.

 I’m currently sitting on an adaption of Northanger Abbey called Catherine the Goth, though it’s not overtly LGBT it would have been as inclusive as possible.

Though not Austen, my first webseries Once Upon a Blog ended with LGBT fairy tale characters ripping apart their heteronormative ever afters and…triggering a fairy tale apocalypse. It’s a long story. There’s also an adaption of a midsummer night’s dream in my head with an overactive drama club kid named Puck trying to isolate the “gay gene” and fucking up an entire school’s love life. Tentatively titled “Puck my Life” we’ll see if anything comes of any of those.

At the moment I’m looking into ways of resurrecting Pride Week and Prejudice, that one died too soon and deserved way better. I’m open to suggestions!

EDIT: Now that I think about it, Emma Woodhouse was supposed to be in Pride Week and Prejudice Season 2 to serve as a recap, Elijah mentions knowing her in the first episode. Saying that she’s been busy with weddings. There’s a kind of joke post around here somewhere with names and logos of various Austen adaptations.

Pride Week & Prejudice Will Not Continue.

With a heavy heart it pains me to announce that Pride Week & Prejudice will not continue on to a second season. 

As anyone who's ever done anything in webseries or independent films can tell you, a project like this is a machine and simply does not work without all of its parts. 

Do to events beyond our control, we've been forced to shut down production. Ethically speaking it was for the best interest of those involved, their safety and respect for the posterity of the work has kept us from recasting and moving on. 

From the bottom of my heart I apologize to the cast, the crew and all of the people involved who made this funny little project a success. I want to thank all of the fans as well -- without an audience there is no show. 

I can't imagine updating too much after this, but the page will be here should you choose to give the series a go or listen to the soundtrack. Asks and submissions will stay open, just in case. 

This is not the end of our creative endeavors, and we will move on and keep the lessons learned not only from the production but from Jane Austen herself. For as much as I loved this project and am disappointed to see it go, the friends gained are well worth the heartbreak: 

"Friendship is certainly the finest balm for the pangs of disappointed love."

When does season 2 start?

To put it simply, I have no idea. Production of season 2 is a little different from season 1. Season 1 was shot after all the scripts were finished. This season we're going with the flow a bit more, but I'm not comfortable with releasing anything until the majority of-- if not all of the series is in the can.

It could be as early as March, it could be as late as May. I'll keep you posted.

What are some of the differences between production on this series and your last?

Um. All of them. All of the differences.

The last show I did was an even way more amateur production (if you can believe that) called Once Upon a Blog. Its first season ran from summer to winter 2010. Once Upon a Blog  was essentially about fairy tale characters coming to our world. 

Note, I said it aired in 2010, a full year before ABC's Once Upon a Time but that's neither here nor there. 

Development wasn't that long, Once Upon a Blog's first season was maybe two months in development before production began full swing? It came together very quickly, and all the pieces kind of snapped together immediately. 

I began writing Pride Week and Prejudice before Once Upon a Blog was a thing, and only really seriously considered doing anything with it back in May, and so development lasted years. Preproduction began over the summer, and the show was in full swing by August. 

Once Upon a Blog had an obscure second season that mixed video with prose and art. Originally it was intended to be a full series, but time didn't allow it. I was too ambitious with the show, but I'm glad I still got to tell the story on my terms. Once Upon a Blog had more of an artsy kind of heart, mixed with  cautionary tales. The whole idea was that fairy tales were designed to prepare us for the big things in life, but when those things happen-we're totally unprepared. Who do we blame for that? 

Pride Week and Prejudice simply translates Jane Austen's work into my life setting. The themes, to me, are the same, and the dialogue adapts quite nicely. 

Also, this cast is not flakey. At all. I really picked a team of winners.
