Wait, wait, wait, your husband's name is Kev??! Have I been wrong in picturing him as eight feet of benevolent muscle or is he actually a force of loving destruction named Kevin?
6âČ 2âł of benevolent muscle named Kevin.Â
And the ironic thing is that he can bench pressâŠwell weâre really not sure because he doesnât do gyms but the one time we DID get him on a weight bench at a friendsâ house he ran out of plates before we hit his limit.Â
But then, heâs a welder and manhandles large commercial grade steel doors for a living, usually alone. He can bicep curl me. His hands are twice the size of mine. He can one hand a Zwiehander. His shoulder breadth is ridiculous. He has to buy t-shirts in 2xl just to fit his neck and shoulders, and then I have to take them in at the waist. (Though he still does have a Soft Tum, v. good for cuddles)
And heâs also far, far more peaceable and reluctant to get into fights than I am. He would much rather discuss the philosophy of martial arts over some coffee than, say, challenge a sitting congressman to a bare-knuckle brawl behind a Dennyâs.Â

Calum looking all greasy and beach-sleazy, doing curls on the roof in bitch-goggles and an oily mullet. The quads clearly arenât all that yet but the upper body is looking great. If I was extremely wealthy, Iâd have a whole stable of roided, veiny, overtanned fucktrash like this hanging around so I could do drugs off their tits.
Part 1: The Keto Diet
Welcome to Facts on Fads, my new series reviewing popular dietary trends. Part 1 is on my most requested topic: the ketogenic diet.
What is it?
The ketogenic diet is a form of very low-carbohydrate diet, in which carbohydrate is typically restricted to less than 50g or even 30g per day.
Where did it come from?
The ketogenic diet was originally developed for the treatment of epilepsy in the early 1920s. It became well-known through the Dr. Atkins low-carb diet in the 1970s, and has recently had another resurgence in popularity.
How does it work?
After a few days of very low carb intake, the body runs out of its stored supply of glucose, which is usually the bodyâs main fuel source. Â Instead, ketone bodies begin to be produced as an alternative energy source for the body.
Ketone bodies are produced from fat molecules, so itâs been suggested that the body breaks down stored fat tissue to form ketones. However, ketone bodies are also produced from dietary sources of fat, so a state of ketosis doesnât necessarily mean the bodyâs fat stores are being consumed.
What are the upsides?
For people who are interested in weight loss, the ketogenic diet seems to be about as effective about any other diet. In some studies, it was associated with faster short-term weight loss compared to diets higher in carbohydrates.Â
However, we donât have long-term evidence for maintenance of weight loss, and weight re-gain is likely to be a problem, just as with other diets.Â
The ketogenic diet does have some evidence for improving blood sugar in patients with Type 2 diabetes.
Some people say they have improved energy and mood on this diet, although evidence for this is currently lacking.
What are the downsides?
1. Side effects:
The keto diet has been known to cause several side effects, including  low energy, mental fog, nausea, bad breath, hair thinning, and headache. Most of these symptoms resolve with time, but some may persist.
2. Lack of evidence:
We have very little evidence for ketoâs long-term effects on health markers, including blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol. No quality evidence is currently available for the effect of this diet on mortality (how long you live) and quality of life (how well you live).
3. High degree of dietary restriction:
The keto diet is highly restrictive, and can be difficult to follow. The harder a diet is to maintain, the more likely people are to quit - and  âyo-yo dietingâ with rapid fluctuations in weight is associated with an increased risk of mortality.
4. Low in fibre:
The keto diet tends to be fairly low in fibre, since whole grains, fruits and veggies contain carbohydrates. Diets high in fibre have been shown to decrease the risk of colon cancer, and have lots of other health benefits, so this is certainly a downside of the keto diet.
5. Potential for increased dietary saturated fats:
Finally, when you cut out carbohydrates, you end up eating a lot more fat. If this is healthy fat (nuts, olive oil, fish, avocado, etc), this is not concerning. However, if people end up eating lots of red meat, dairy, and processed foods, this is likely to have a negative impact on health, which is the very thing weâre trying to avoid by eating well!
