I don't think she has ever written a more poignant post than this for me. We are always so quick to hold on to pain and wrap ourselves in it as an excuse or explanation. Instead of shying away, today I'll use whatever painful hurt feelings I'm hanging on to and do better and push harder. I will get my frat double under! How can you use your hurt feelings in a more productive way today?
Slow Cooker Chuck Beef Stew
This is by far the easiest recipe I have made in a while (aside from baking some bacon as a snack). Â I ate a whole batch for dinner tonight on this craptastic rainy day! Â I personally do not have an issue with full fat dairy/cream so I chose to use cream of mushroom soup. Â Pacific Natural Foods makes a great soup that contains organic mushrooms, organic creme fraiche, organic rice flour, sea salt, organic whey, organic onion and garlic powder. Â However, if your system does not like any of those ingredients - simply choose a different soup. Â Condensed is always best because it stays nice and thick like a gravy for the beef. Â But you can always try using broth and spices if you want to be paleo. Â No matter what, learn to love your slow cooker! Â My next adventure will be ribs in a homemade paleo sauce :)
Ingredients:
- approximately 1 lb chuck beef for stew
- 12 oz organic condensed cream of mushroom soup
- 1/2 cup water
Directions:
1 - Combine all ingredients in slow cooker.
2 - Cook on low for 8-9 hours.
3 - ENJOY!!Â

Wednesdays are my favorite training day of the week! I have one on ones with not only the hottest coach, but also one of my favorite teachers. You are lucky in life when you find someone who just clicks with your personality. A solid, effective foundation fostered by people who genuinely care and want to see me improve is monumental. When the way someone explains lifts/technique is so easily understandable that you can follow their logic as if it was your own is when training magic really happens. I'm lucky to have two such coaches in my life right now. One of which never gets out of my head - that little voice always pushing me harder, faster or even telling me to dial it back and rest more. It's actually annoying when I don’t want to listen, but there is a method to the madness – or so I’m told. The other is purely a teacher in every sense of the word. He will not stop, will not push, will not let me move on until it’s perfect. Without this caring, supportive, ass-kicking duo I would not be where I am today. Understandably, these 1-1 sessions make all the difference for me. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my Crossfit friends and look forward to seeing them in the box for WODs. But Wednesday's are my day! My day to really dig deep, learn a ton and practice some huge lifts. I get the one on one attention that I need to really progress in my training at this stage. Will I always need these sessions? No. Will I always want these sessions? YES! Needless to say I'm beyond excited for my training tonight. Add on top of that the fact that we are working on my favorite lift (snatch) and it's understandable why I can hardly contain myself today. Wait… maybe it's just the fact that I had coffee with a LOT of splenda (so toxic but soooo good). Either way - hot trainer, 1-1 session, favorite lift = one happy strong woman :) What is exciting you today? What can you not wait to do? Who can you not wait to see and learn from? Have fun, live hard and be excited!!
Be free of the crap you are carrying, leave your baggage at the door! :)
Haters Beware!!
As I grow in my crossfit/paleo life, I find more negative people than ever before. Some are even related to me! I’m not sure if it’s their own insecurity (probably) or egos (definitely), but people seem to think I am living my life wrong and have no problem telling me this! So, what’s the deal?! Why does eating gluten free make me a bad person? Why does lifting weights make me less feminine in my mother’s eyes? Better yet, why do I care?! I know that how I eat directly impacts my happiness and my daily performance. Eating clean, real foods is in no way a BAD thing. Haters will get hung up on the fact that I order my latte with whipping cream and eat more bacon than water I drink (not really, but close)! I love being able to lift heavy things, and while other people might not see a huge difference in my body, I can feel it. You try laughing after 100 consecutive situps plus L-leg lifts AND situps on the ghd. It’s a horrible yet delightful pain that I live for. So, to all the haters out there: I’m sorry you think I’m doing it wrong. I’m sorry you can’t get past your own issues to see how I’m choosing to live my life in a healthy way. Thank you for questioning everything I do because it only fuels my fire more. I will get to the games one day and you will not be there to share in the winnings. I will be WOD-ing today and you will probably barely get out of your chair. Don't you have bigger issues to worry about than how I eat or exercise?! Am I perfect? No, I’m not claiming to be. But what I’m doing works for me. Tell all the haters in your life to go find what truly works for them. Because I can bet, they aren’t doing it, they aren’t living life to the fullest. Haters beware – save your breath. I can’t hear you over the thumping inside my heart, pushing me harder and faster. You are simply the box I jump on to get higher and faster.
Seymour’d told me to shine my shoes just as I was going out the door . . . . I was furious. The studio audience were all morons, the announcer was a moron, the sponsors were morons, and I just damn well wasn’t going to shine my shoes for them, I told Seymour. I said they couldn’t see them anyway, where we sat. He said to shine them anyway. He said to shine them for the Fat Lady. I didn’t know what the hell he was talking about, but he had a very Seymour look on his face, and so I did it. He never did tell me who the Fat Lady was, but I shined my shoes for the Fat lady every time I ever went on the air again—all the years you and I were on the program together, if you remember . . . . Anyway, it seemed clear why Seymour wanted me to shine my shoes when I went on the air. It made sense . . . . There isn’t anyone out there who isn’t Seymour’s Fat Lady. Don’t you know that? Don’t you know that secret yet? And don’t you know—listen to me, now—don’t you know who that Fat Lady really is?
Back to Home
After an excruciatingly long week off from the box, I am back home. Yesterday was my first WOD in over a week. Was it pretty? Not particularly. Was it adjusted for my injury? Absolutely. But, I did it. It was AWESOME and I was home. I use that word very specifically. Aside from the fact that I practically live at my box during the week (I have been known to show up at 4:30 for 5 pm WOD and not leave until 8 pm on rampers show up), I am also back at home base. I am starting off slowly and using less weight than before. I am not allowed to go near my PR’s for a few more weeks as I continue to heal. I need to admit – this was not the best part about being back. I am a Taurus, a bull, and when I want to do something, I damn near always do it. Being told by my coach that I needed to pull it back, adjust movements and rest more was painful to hear. Is he right?! Of course, but no, I will never admit that in person to his face – sorry Felipe. There’s something about feeling caged, limited, impotent that just doesn’t do it for me. I know some people who don’t mind that feeling. I am not one of them. I speak my mind (sometimes loudly) and have no shame. So then why do I feel guilty about playing around with a friend and deadlifting with him at 185# (no where near my 1 rep max of 230#)? I got home and actually worried about having overdone it – after getting an earful for training more than I should have. Where does this new fear come from? I am still strong, still able to do things I did before. This is not the worst injury I have had, and CERTAINLY not the worst injury possible. But then, the familiar feeling of exhaustion and peace swept over me. I WOD-ed! I saw my friends, my crossfit family. I am still capable of doing things that most people don’t bother trying. So what if I have to take a few steps back. I am not derailed. As a good friend put it; “Sarah, you are recovering from and injury and we are in this for the long haul.” I am sometimes the stupidest person I know. Don’t I know this? Don’t I tell my friends to take it easy when they hurt themselves? So why don’t we ever take our own advice?! I got to see a few of my favorite CFS people (those that will be in my camp, in my corner when I go to the games in a few years – you know who you are). I can’t tell you how much I missed the community and family that I have created at my box. I am picky. I cut people out of my life who are emotionally or physically toxic influences (yes, you can find toxic people even in the crossfit community). So to say I was back with family is HUGE. This is a big part of why I crossfit. If you’ve read my previous blog posts about getting in my own head, you will know I like home. Home is grounding, a safe base to hide from the world. It’s fitting that I find home at my box. A huge, industrial, cold space filled with warm smiles, great achievements and loud cheers. There I am safe. I fall, I fail, I try again. There I can make a TOTAL fool of myself and no one seems to care. There I am empowered to reach for more, do better, be better. Is there magic in that space? No. Is there something in the water fountain? No, we don’t have one. It’s the people that make the difference. It’s my fellow crossfitters at all levels who make it home for me. Cheering each other on, pushing each other to always try harder. Maybe being injured isn’t hell on earth?! Trust me, negotiating WODs with my coach needs to stop. But, I guess I have to give in and wait it out. I feel like a race horse at Belmont waiting for the gates to open, when I can jump back in full force and go after more PRs. But for now, I’m happy to be home, cozy in my routine surrounded by family.
Yesterday is but a dream, tomorrow but a vision. But today well lived makes every yesterday a dream of happiness, and every tomorrow a vision of hope. Look well, therefore, to this day.

Coco Almond Bites
I've noticed that I don't have enough healthy fats in my paleo diet so I wanted to try these babies. Â They are DELICIOUS and a great way to supplement healthy fat and have a sweet and salty treat. Â They taste better than they look (I might need to start actually using my camera instead of my phone)!
Ingredients:
1/3 mounded cup of coconut oil - room temperature
1/4 mounded cup of almond butter (I use Barney Butter)
2 tsp raw honey
Coconut flakes
Sea Salt
Chocolate covered cocoa nibs
Directions:
Mix the coconut oil, almond butter, honey and coconut flakes in a bowl. Â Add as many coconut flakes as needed to dry out the mix a bit. Â Should be easy to pour the mixture but not too runny. Spoon the mixture into candy papers. Â Sprinkle sea salt over each one and top with chocolate cocoa nibs. Place in freezer until set.
Since these have a lot of coconut oil, they melt easily. Â Keep in freezer and defrost for just a few minutes before eating. Â Definitely better chilled. Â I haven't tried switching the ratio of almond butter to coconut oil, but that might help them set more so you don't have to worry about them melting. Â However, I like the melt in your mouth aspect of them ;)
I'll be honest guys, being injured is a real bummer! I want nothing more than to go to the WOD tonight and stumble home tired and exhausted from a great challenge. I was starting to be a Debbie Downer and allow stupid thoughts of failure to creep through until I read this. Lisbeth reminded me that it's all leading to future success. To keep my chin up and stay positive because I'm still hungry for success. Injuries are setbacks, yes. But I'm still learning about myself during a rest week. I'll find inner strength and a sense of balance if I try and don't give up. I am better today than I was yesterday and tomorrow I'll be even better. Stronger, faster, flexible, patient, persistent. I'm always getting better! So are you :)
Fail Cleans!!
Monday I checked the website for Crossfit Stamford (www.crossfitstamford.com) and saw even with the power out, we would be having a great WOD with skill set of cleans and high box jumps. I love cleans and have had a mental block with getting higher than 22” box jumps so this was awesome. My favorite coach was literally standing next to the metal open frame 24” box to emotionally and physically support me. But I was ready this time. I was going to rock this!! It was 4-6 rounds of 3 each (clean and box jump) which went a little something like this: Round 1: 75 lbs cleans to warm up and 22” box jumps. Nice and comfortable, too comfortable! :) Round 2: 85 lbs cleans & 23” box jumps. Did I just jump an extra inch?! Maybe that 24” that has been haunting me isn’t so far off! Round 3: 90 lbs cleans & 24” box jumps. WHAT?! Did I just do that?!!! Where’s the tape measurer! Round 4: 95 lbs cleans & 24” box jumps. Just broke my PR for cleans and still loving jumping 24”! My still bruised shin from 20” box jumps 2 months ago was totally worth this! Round 5: 105 lbs cleans & 24” box jumps. This is getting kinda heavy! Why didn’t I jump to 100lbs? But wait, I can kinda do this! It’s not pretty so I’ll stay here. Round 6: 105 lbs cleans & 24” box jumps. Did I seriously just throw the bar into my chest?! I’m losing form and not getting my rack! Wow, my boob hurts! Sorry boys, no pictures for this bruise ;) Moral of the story from Monday – keep the bar close to your body, get under it and whatever you do, don’t throw it at yourself!! My collar bone is surprisingly not bruised, while my boob is (only one, not even both)! Hrmmmm, proof of a poor form WOD. The metcon portion of this WOD resulted in a twisted ankle, visit to the orthopedic surgeon and mandatory rest for a stress fracture! Maybe 10 WODs in the last 13 days was a little aggressive?! Couple that with a few PR’s, new skills learned and some post WOD sprints and maybe I had this coming?! Rest is so important but sometimes we get a little too amped to remember why we need it. I have a 5 year goal to get to the games. Not next year, not even 3 years. I know I need to train smart and build good foundation to get there. Yet I still pushed myself too hard and was too much of a perfectionist. I was WOD greedy. I wanted more, needed more. There were a few days when I didn’t even give myself 24 hours between WODs. So, I’ll be out of the box until Tuesday, gladly riding my bike, going for relaxing swims, meditating and reading The Hunger Games. Purely relaxing week. Good luck to my fellow CFS-ers as they attempt Murph on Monday – I’ll be there cheering you on! Hope you all have a great long weekend!
