anatomy is always tricky, it definitely comes with practice and time above all. but that doesn’t mean there aren’t ways to improve quicker! this may be a yap so i’ll put it under the cut ww
mainly, i do a lot of pose/figure studies, working from reference! it’s important to focus both on the structure of the body, but also not forget that it’s okay to stylise things so they feel more dynamic. so sometimes i do studies where i break down the pose into simple, structural shapes, like these:
but other times it’s good to do quicker, gestural sketches, focusing on speed and fluidity before anatomical accuracy.
feel free to use the sketches above for reference in how i break down poses though!
in general, the main thing is to not give up! anatomy is very difficult, and regardless of how experienced someone is they’re bound to make some mistakes. if you feel like you’re lacking in structural knowledge, i recommend you check out morpho’s anatomy books, or proko’s ‘anatomy of the human body’ tutorial series on youtube! both of those helped me immensely in terms of understanding the human body, but they require a little more attention than just keeping at it
— so that’d be my main tip! keep at it! studying can be very frustrating, so it’s good to get into a mindset where you treat all your sketches equally. regardless of how good or bad they turn out, once they’re done, move on to the next one. keep doing that and suddenly you’ll have a sketchbook full of pose drawings! even if some of them don’t turn out how you wanted, i can guarantee you’ll find at least one you’re proud of, and that’s all the motivation you need. i believe in you!!
