〖 11/30 PRINCES 〗Kaidoh kaoru
for a series with such a large, distinct and lovable cast, i expected that i'd find myself conflicted and changing my favorite character every other episode and chapter... and although i did grow to love the large majority of the characters, have over thirty i'd call favorites, and a conflicting top ten, my number one favorite character remained the same for the entire series; kaidoh~
there's so much to say, so how about i start with what we see on the outside! there's no doubt kaidoh is extremely hard working, perhaps the biggest embodiment of drive alongside shishido. he’s always pushing himself over the limit and doing more than he’s asked for, constantly seeking to surpass his weaknesses and give himself challenges… rather than loving competition and wanting victory, it seems like the foe kaidoh wishes to surpass the most is himself. i just love how persistent and motivated he is! i also happen to be really thankful for just how much emphasis is put on this aspect of him during in his matches, for example when he’ll take all the shots without using his special techniques for the entirety of his doubles match against higa, or on a more emotional level, when he’s shattered over jackal easily copying the move he’s been working on to improve for weeks.
yet another easily provoked and aggressive character, kaidoh is interesting in that his anger is more specific and will mostly only be sparked when those around him are getting mistreated or when he's being humiliated. the way i see it, this aggressiveness seems like more of a defense mechanism, possibly born from how he got made fun of when he was younger with the whole dresses and kaoru-chan thing (。;;ω;;) yet we're quickly introduced to his kind-hearted, protective, shy, considerate and frankly adorable side, one he prefers hiding but that is without any doubt a big part of his personality, and a huge part of why i love him so much!
i think what makes him stand out from the other rough'n'tough boys is just how remarkably courteous kaidoh is~ he's definitely more guarded and feisty towards people of his age or younger, but unless gravely provoked, when it comes to his family, upperclassmen or adults, he always shows himself to be excessively polite, respectful and never shows any kind of rudeness by keeping on pretending to be a Tough Guy™ like a lot of characters of his kind often do! politeness is something i truly appreciate... and it seems like many characters agree with me! i find it absolutely adorable how so many of them have complimented him for this, from random women to taka-san's dad to yagyuu _(:3 」∠)_ another great thing about this side of his is that even with those he’s more guarded towards, most notably ryoma and momo, kaidoh knows when to put aside his temper and can be surprisingly mature when the situation calls for it~ he never hesitated to lend them a hand and was often more rational about it than them!
after some time, it starts being rather obvious that kaidoh genuinely cares for everyone in seigaku and would put his team before himself without any hesitation. kind-hearted and protective, he often jumps in to defend others... and not just his teammates, but animals, strangers and rivals as well. he always does so selflessly, without expecting anything in return... but also without thinking of the consequences, be they positive or highly negative, which brings back to his hot-headed side~ although so many of his actions showcased this especially well, two in particular especially stood out to me and brought my love for him to whole new levels. the first was the anime exclusive scene where he saved a puppy right before his match against rikkaidai; the action in itself especially touched me since animals are extremely important to me, but so did the fact that kaidoh chose to help him without a moment of hesitation, even if it meant arriving late to what was most likely the most important match to date in his life. the other moment was when he stood up on his own against people that were badmouthing rikkai and yukimura, defending who he barely knew as anything other than opponents at the time... it was so sweet of him to do what he did, and an action that spoke millions on the growth of the relationships between the main teams~
another thing i find especially endearing about kaidoh would be his shyness~ the way he gets flustered anytime someone compliments him, how he stutters when on the phone, how he gets shy even in front of cats... aaah he's just too adorable! this seems to be more played up in the anime and in alternate media such as prince of after school, but either way, it always shines through! his type of character is really one of my favorites, rough and guarded to cover up timidity yet still so kind-hearted~
the first inexplicably ridiculous and weird character introduced to the series, i still can't take kaidoh seriously, what with his fushu... yet, just as with everyone else, his quirks only add to his character~ with the importance he accords to food, his fear of ghosts and horror stories, special skills in housekeeping, and most importantly, his large amount of love for animals of all kinds, every aspect of him just appeals to me so much! and my love for him can only be further reinforced by his multitude of interesting relationships, as well as his growth throughout the series... how he's learning to control his temper, how he came to cooperate well in doubles, how he’s able to put aside his differences with momo when the situation calls for it, and most importantly... how he’s steadily growing into a boy fit for the title of seigaku’s future captain (。ŏωŏ)
〖 10/30 PRINCES 〗Echizen ryoga
although all other anime exclusive characters were, in my opinion, uninteresting and hard to sympathize with, one of them is what i would call the greatest thing to have ever happened... clearly many agreed, the mangaka included, allowing ryoga to eventually become a canon character in the manga as well! which is something i will forever be thankful for, as ryoga is one of my ten favorite characters of the entire series~
free-spirited, ryoga does things his own way and seems to find enjoyment in everything that comes his way. he doesn't let anything tie him down either, almost to an extreme with how he's going to leave home at a very young age, or just rides off into the sunset on a jet ski... and then somehow finds himself in new york... which is a big part of why he reminds me of nanjiro so much, especially from what we've seen of his father in his younger years! he has a very playful side to him as well, something i always appreciate~ he loves goofing around and toying with people, both in a friendly teasing way and as sassy provocation, while not being affected by snarky words himself!
bold, confident, flirty, talkative, ryoga knows he has a lot presence and loves to be at the center of the spotlight, whether it's when he's on the court, amongst a group of ladies, or in the eyes of his little brother~ ryoga has a lot of charisma, but just like his father and brother, i wouldn't really think of him as a leader type, but rather someone who works better alone while his drive and energy inspires others! he's shown to have a certain kind side as well, with how he'll often lend a hand to others and protect them, whether it's ryoma, the other members of seigaku, or tokugawa~
while it's easy to warm up to his personality since it shines through so much during his few appearances, ryoga remains quite a mystery nonetheless since he didn't get to be detailed as deeply as the characters who've appeared in the manga early on have been. where did he go after leaving the echizen's house? was he homeless? has he ever been to school? how old is he? did he ride the jet ski across the ocean all the way from japan to the united states???? the few things we do know about him can't help but make me curious about so much more, because he's just so different than all the other important player characters, who're fundamentally all simple students who play tennis for their school's team... this contrast from the majority adds a certain spice to him, which i love!
hopefully the questions we have concerning ryoga's backstory will be answered for us soon enough, now that we seem to steadily be approaching a ryoga focused arc in the new prince manga! regardless, ryoga remains a strong character with a vibrant personality and an absolutely stunning face, and i can't help but to adore him~
〖 09/30 PRINCES 〗Shiraishi kuranosuke
i would be lying if i said that my love for shiraishi didn't start off as shallow, charmed by his gorgeous face as well as the fact that he's voiced by my favorite voice actor in the series... but he quickly showed himself to be much more than a pretty face! emanating so much charm and magnetism, intriguing as well as eccentric, shiraishi came to be my favorite member of shitenhoji, as well as one of my overall favorites~
extremely charismatic, shiraishi makes use of his strong aura not only to lead and motivate, but also to be alluring and flirtacious, something that'll make him somehow different from most of the other leader types of the series, who're mostly either stern or full of themselves~ despite his live and let live attitude towards his team, he still inspires a strong sense of respect and is shown to have a lot authority over them, as well as being held in high esteem by players of other teams... esteem that was in part earned thanks to his high skill level, but i have no doubt that his allure and way with words had a big role to play as well! none of the characters seem to have any kind of serious issue, disdain or tension with him, and it just seems like everyone, be they from his team or not, feels comfortable around shiraishi and trust him. it seems like this trustworthiness of his will allow others to entrust him with tasks as well, something that can be observed by how he was made captain while only in his second year, or how yanagi will ask him to take care of kirihara's mental state.
shiraishi just so happens to have a certain edge as well, one that might explain why he is often associated to fuji and yukimura... and a likely reason as to why he gets along with his roommates so well~ confident, playful, teasing, stubborn and persuasive, shiraishi seems to enjoy toying around with his opponent to put some spark in his bible tennis, which he otherwise claims to find boring. although we haven't really seen him play a serious singles match other than the one against fuji at the nationals, it still showcased his attitude on the court rather well. returning any kind of magical shot without any struggle, going up against a seemingly insurmountable challenge and overcoming it, using words as well as actions to provoke and bring out the best out of his opponent, shiraishi seeks a certain thrill and knows just how to use his cunning on others to find it! this powerful influence and playful side of his will also show outside of the courts, be it with how he's the only one able to control kin-chan, or how he enjoys teasing everyone, from his team mates to tezuka~
but his persuasion skills are also often used for the well-being of others, which we'll often see during his double matches. whether it was when he gave advice to chitose and tachibana, his opponents at the time, and helped solve their personal issues, or when his enticing compliments allowed kirihara to overcome his aggressive behavior and control himself... shiraishi always seems willing to help and be supportive of those he acknowledges, especially his team mates. not to mention his appreciation for honesty, which will render him unable to allow people to speak badly of others!
attractive, charismatic, charming, persuasive, talented, trustworthy, kind, loved by all... could it be... that shiraishi is actually flawless!? no! as a tenipuri character, especially a member of shitenhoji, that is thankfully not allowed~ his charms are outbalanced by his eccentricity alone, and if you ask me, this only leads to him being even more perfect! his everyday special entrances through his school's gates, his love of gags and easy laughter at any and all jokes, his interest in his school's comedy classes, his catchphrase, his constant stripping and nakedness, his fetish for hair and shampoo smells, his questionably unreasonable amount of love for his pet beetle, kaburiel... not to mention how much of a health freak he is, obsessed with health goods and constantly nagging others for their unhealthy habits... and of course, i can't forget to talk about his obsession with poisonous plants... his knowledge on them, the fact that he writes articles on them for his school journal, that he brought some to the U17 camp, that he talks about them all the time and for several minutes at a time, and the suggestive things he says concerning them, which lead me to believe he might seriously poison someone one day... indeed, shiraishi's charming exterior hides quite the bizarre young man~
the way he leads his team by ensuring their friendship while giving them the freedom to follow their own path, showing his strong faith in them as individuals... the way his tennis style relies on the basics, remains realistic and not flashy whatsoever, creating a huge and very pleasant contrast from the absurdity of the other players' abilities... shiraishi is not only a great boy, but a wonderful leader and player as well. with all of these little charms and quirks, he has definitely earned his place as one of the most popular characters!
〖 08/30 PRINCES 〗Kirihara akaya
it seems like 'i used to hate him, but now i love him' is a very common opinion concerning kirihara amongst the fandom, and i'll admit that my feelings concerning him have been a roller coaster as well! from liking him after his first appearance, to despising him for his actions, to feeling bad for him, and finally, to understanding him and ending up adoring him to the point of becoming one of my top ten characters of the whole series... i simply think kirihara is the kind of character you cannot judge by the cover, as much is going on underneath!
there's no doubt whatsoever that the most important trait to talk about when it comes to kirihara is his overly emotional side. his emotions, be they negative or positive, are always intense and easy to read... and in turn, he seems unable to understand how to handle any kind of negative feeling, which is what will lead to his outbursts and violence. this aspect of his personality will also lead kirihara to being extremely vulnerable, as he is easily swayed and manipulated... and sadly, many characters will take advantage of this, be it with good or bad intentions. whether he resorts to crying, screaming or pummeling someone, his actions clearly show that he still has the lack of control you'd associate to a child, and i somehow... find this childish vulnerability endearing. does this mean i approve of his aggressive play? of course not, but i do understand where he's coming from, what leads to it, and that it is never unprovoked or uncalled for.
but the great thing is that when kirihara isn't overwhelmed by negative emotions, he'll usually have a cheerful demeanor and be very friendly, talkative and loud... if not a bit too much so, which will cause the annoyance of many around him, most notably his vice-captain and roommates at the U17 camp~ he has a lot of friends at school and easily attracts other players as well, be they his team mates or members of other teams... and i think this shows that unlike the other aggressive characters who're mostly all considered hard to approach, his dangerous and unpredictable aspect is strictly reserved to the courts, and doesn't hinder his social interactions whatsoever!
kirihara is also shown to hold his team in very high esteem and takes a lot of pride in being part of rikkai, and their overall victory matters just as much to him than his individual performance... not to mention that this team spirit of his seems to not be strictly reserved to rikkai, as we'll see him taking the court 5 vs court 3 match to heart as well! and this innocently kind side of his will also show when it comes to individuals, as we are slowly made to see that kirihara is very protective and considerate to the ones he likes... shielding yanagi from getting hit, frequently visiting yukimura during his stay at the hospital, instantly snapping out of his anger and feeing guilty when he hits shiraishi... and he just generally shows a lot of appreciation and gratitude for those who're kind to him!
somehow, kirihara doesn't seem to hold on to grudges either! although he'll immediately give in to anger when someone provokes, humiliates or injures him, after some time passes, he doesn't seem particularly disgruntled by those people's presence any longer... something that'll be particularly noticeable at the U17 camp, where he doesn't show any kind of tension towards fuji or tachibana, and even acts questionably friendly towards krauser (´∀`);; i consider this part of his growth, as well as how he'll slowly let go of his pride and arrogance, and how, thanks to the help of others, he'll learn to not lose control as often anymore... not to mention how yukimura will come to feel comfortable about entrusting the team to kirihara, as the future captain of rikkai!
his love for video games and manga, the fact that he still believes in santa, his cluelessness when it comes to english, playing baseball with a broom while on cleaning duty, his gullibility, his inability to give up on a goal he sets for himself, his playfulness, his sleepiness... kirihara is still such a child, and i think all sides of him, all of his qualities and all of his flaws, strongly reflect that... and i can't help but find it endearing (。;;ω;;)~
〖 07/30 PRINCES 〗Momoshiro takeshi
if ryoma is the total opposite of what you would expect from the main character of a shonen series, momo is the one who fits the type to a T. many will think this is a negative thing, but in my opinion, with how well-handled momo is, it's not! and he just so happens to be my second favorite character of the entire series, as well as the first to catch my eyes~
friendly and playful, outgoing and carefree, sociable and attached, momo is one of the biggest mood makers of seigaku, as well as the one, along with kikumaru, who'll allow the team's freshmen, juniors and seniors to feel more closely knit and at ease with each other. talkativeness and extroversion are traits i always appreciate in people, and he always shows these with how he'll quickly open up and try making others at ease, be they teammates or players from other teams. but he'll also try to be a reliable friend, always lending a shoulder to those around him and being ready to defend and support them!
momo seems to love giving others a lot of attention, whether or not they desire it! and when he chooses to show interest in someone, he's not easily discouraged and won't let them go no matter how they behave or talk, for better or for worse~ this brings me to his hot-headedness and love for challenges, which will make way for many tense relationships between him and others, most notably with kaidoh! but in cases such as these, momo still shows to have a lot of care and consideration for those he thinks of as rivals as well as friends. however, his easily angered side will also make it so that he doesn't show friendliness towards just anyone, especially not those who have seriously wronged him or those around him.
this brings me to his stubborn, hot-headed and simple-minded traits... the ones he shares with many other characters, but represents the best with how vocal and open about his emotions he is! why are the large majority of my favorite characters the angry ones? i'm not even sure myself, but in momo's case, there's just really something i appreciate in that intense, unrelenting determination! with his strong sense of pride, he'll want to show up to any and all who underestimate or provoke him, and won't stop at anything to reach the goals he has set out for himself. he'll encounter many failures along the way, losing both singles and doubles matches, sustaining several injuries, being dropped from the regulars, and even finding himself on the loser side. but despite all of these events, despite how eroded his pride will become, we'll never see his determination waver, and he will always work hard to rise back up!
but the most interesting side about momo is probably the one which earned him his reputation as the trickster of seigaku! his keen sense of observation and understanding of the situations, conditions and opponents surrounding him, as well as his strong natural instinct and playfulness are really interesting aspects of him, both when it comes to his personality and his style as a player! as a skill, i think that it really sets him apart, without being far-fetched nor pulled out of nowhere, since it was pointed out early on and polished throughout the course of the series. although his stubbornness and brashness will often gain the upper hand, momo still shows to have a good grasp on his abilities and will often make use of them, and this style of his will also make him into a great doubles player... showcased by how he's the character who's played with the most different partners throughout the series!
the ways he's grown since the beginning of the storyline are subtle but numerous, be it how he has learned to set aside his rivalry with kaidoh during serious occasions to become a strong and cooperative team, how he now understands that he has to stop when he's past his limits, how he has captured the essence of his natural ability and can now make use of the full extent of his intuitive skills without giving in to his rashness... and simply his general gain of maturity and growth towards being able to properly support the team as the future vice-captain of seigaku.
his tendency to get into trouble due to his simple mind and dragging others along with him, his bottomless stomach, his love for animals and easy tears when it comes to them, his strong sense of justice and the importance he places in team spirit and team work, not only within his team but with the other middle schoolers as well, are all aspects i also adore about him! momoshiro is simply such an entertaining and kind hearted kid with a fiery side, and i'm so thankful for the impact he has both on his team and on all those near them (。uωu。)
〖 06/30 PRINCES 〗Zaizen hikaru
one of the many charming boys of shitenhoji, a top contender for the title of biggest tennis brat, and yet another character who's made quite an impact despite his small number of appearances, zaizen is one of my three favorite players from shitenhoji, as well as being part of my top ten~
quickly shown to be very frank, blunt and always speaking his mind, zaizen often comes off as cold and simply rude... but i've always been one to prefer honesty, no matter how harsh, then lies and cover up! not to mention that he differs from the other sharp-tongued characters in that he is never looking for fights and doesn't intend to provoke; he's seriously just saying whatever passes through his mind. and it's not as if this straightforwardness of his only brings negativity! the moment that made me start liking him was during his doubles match against seigaku at the nationals... or should i say, the doubles match that became a singles match between chitose and tezuka? i highly disapproved of what happened there and how unfair it was, and thankfully, zaizen agreed with me! i was glad to see that his candidness led him to not let himself get pushed aside unfairly, and that he tried to interfere a duel that he should have been part of in the first place. although it ultimately failed and led to him embarrassing himself, i'm still happy about what he did... it honestly was the only redeeming point of that match, if you ask me~
the most notable thing about zaizen probably is the simple fact that he's part of shitenhoji, and that will also be the key that will allow us to see him develop~ he starts off as the black sheep of the team, feeling out of place both at the school and within the club... only to find out thanks to the other members of shitenhoji that each of them are just as much of mismatching, discording individuals than he is, and that zaizen is not as much of the straight man he thinks! and in between the time he first joined the team and the main events of the series, we see that he went from keeping a straight, if not annoyed, face through all the jokes and pranks going on around him, to playing along with his teammates' frivolities! from filming them doing all their stupidities, to looking overly excited about their... fantastic entrances through the school's gates, to competing about youtube view counts, to following along with yuu-kun and joining the brigade of the U17 camp... he's definitely not a stranger to shitenhoji's eccentricity any longer!
despite all of that, he still remains somewhat apathetic and hard to read... lazy, unmotivated, and according to shiraishi himself, zaizen isn't serious and doesn't make use of the full extent of his abilities as the tensai of the team should. yet again, this is where he differs from other players who rarely pull out all their cards! where they'll be looking for a challenge or to avoid humiliating their opponent, zaizen is simply too listless to bother, and won't even mind losing. is there a reason for him to be so uninterested? will we ever get to see the full extent of his abilities, and if we do, what could lead him to go all out? i'm not sure these questions will ever be answered for us considering how much of a minor character zaizen is, but despite that, it can still be interesting to think about! not to mention that being part of room 205, zaizen is pretty much confirmed to be the future captain of his team... think of the potential for growth that means for him!
but as always, a tenipuri character is not a tenipuri character if they don't have a peculiar side, right? with his constant dry and unfazed comments on all the ridiculous happenings (such as) and blogging obsession where he gossips about all the U17 representatives, zaizen often ends up making me laugh~ not to mention that he has his precious side as well! young and tactless, indirectly helping out other characters, having still waters run deep as his motto, sticking with shitenhoji and undoubtedly having grown to have a strong fondness for his team and its members, and last but not least, having a lot of passion for music... despite his many flaws and frequently bratty attitude, zaizen turned out to be loveable just as everyone else in shitenhoji, and quickly became one of my favorite characters!
〖 05/30 PRINCES 〗Sanada genichirou
the emperor, well loved by both the characters and the fans... and myself! before i knew it, sanada became my fourth favorite character. being one of the most interesting characters of the series, i fear i'll never be able to paint a proper portrait of him in just a few words, but let's give it a shot~
i think the most defining trait about sanada, as well as the main factor that allowed my love for him to grow so much, is just how much charisma and leadership he has. despite only being the vice-captain of his team, his influence on them is just as strong as yukimura's, and his natural leadership clearly shows with how anyone who finds themselves near him will instinctively follow his lead and listen to his words. the most obvious example of this would be with the black jerseys, a bunch of angry boys who were mostly all rivals up until that point, who found themselves motivated by ryoma's drive, but were led and kept in line by sanada. i feel like it's truly thanks to him that the losers came to have so much solidarity, and that all 27 of them made it back together... not to mention the various amazing speeches he gave at that time! listening to him, even i was impressed! his charisma simply overflows, and i have the feeling that this is what makes so many attracted to him~
but here's where it gets interesting. despite his strong magnetism and seemingly arrogant ways, i can't help but to have noticed that sanada seems to suffer from a strong inferiority complex. never recovering from a one-sided loss against tezuka a few years back, taking the fact that he always comes in second to yukimura very harshly, fearing his inability to fill the captain's shoes, the guilt of having failed to rikkai's reign of victory, and then finding himself on the loser side... sanada always comes in second place, and no one blames him for his failures more than himself. but thankfully, it seems to me like he is slowly learning to accept that defeat is not the end of the road, and that much can be gained from mistakes. i do believe that experiencing failure alongside dozens of other boys, the black jerseys, and seeing how motivated and fired up ryoma, kin-chan and some others were despite their loss and the humiliation has made its effect on sanada. hopefully that is the case, and he will be able to find it in himself to stop beating himself up so much and feeling guilty for not measuring up!
yet another trait that makes sanada different to me is how unlike the other captains and vice-captains, calm, collected and strategic are simply not words in his vocabulary! rather, he seems to be much more instinctive, tenacious and easily swept up by his emotions, leading him to often get aggressive and furious... something we notice in many of the younger characters, rather than in those who lead! didn't yukimura himself say that kirihara reminded him of sanada? there's also something about just how brash he is, how much difficulty he has expressing his emotions, almost always resorting to anger or indifference when he gets flustered... it's for reasons such as these that i can't believe i once thought sanada was similar to tezuka!
this difficulty of his to deal with emotions is most likely what makes it hard, for both us as the audience and for the characters, to notice how sanada has this strong sense of responsibility for others and even deep care for those close to him. he carries everyone's burdens as if they were his own, leading him to show a lot of stringency towards teammates, but also wishing the best for them, something we'll see both as he find himself leading rikkai, as well as the brigade later on. a more gentle side of this aspect of his can be seen with how he'll be watching over and trying to reassure yukimura throughout his stay at the hospital, how he'll discuss hardships and help out ryoma on several occasions, how he'll show a considerable amount of respect for those he considers his rivals such as atobe and tezuka, and how he'll find himself grow close to the members of the black jerseys, doing things such as share his water with kaidoh or even let kin-chan ride on his shoulders (。;ω;)
but what is a prince of tennis character without a huge dose of eccentricity! sanada stands out by how... traditional he is, which is illustrated by his intense self-discipline, but also by how he loves historical plays, historical novels, traditional japanese instrumentals and antiquities, spends his free time playing shougi, sorting grains of rice, practicing calligraphy, kendo and meditation, claims to be bad at keeping up with trends and has a hard time using electronics... did i mention going to bed at 9PM every day?
overall, i find sanada to be one of the most interesting and well handled characters of the entire series. disciplined, intense, hard working and driven, a highly charismatic natural leader with an inferiority complex, a klutz when it comes to handling emotions and modern aspects of life, leading to many funny and cute moments involving him... do i even want to start talking about how attractive he is?? sanada is simply such a well-rounded character, and i love him!
