YOUNG ROYALS 3.01 • for @alltoowille <3
I’ve said this before but frog scientist Wille naming a species after Simon ❤️🐸❤️🐸❤️🐸
Nothing just watching Young Royals for the first time
Wille 💔
Young Royals 3.01 💜
A very belated birthday gift for Wille – but right on time for summer festival season – the last (for now) of my little non-royal meet-cute series, finally dredged out of my drafts.
Under Pressure
Sweltering in the heat at a music festival, it’s not the vocalist on stage who captures Wille’s attention.
Basically, this:
“Hej,” a warm voice said, pitched with a slight edge to be heard over the ambient noise. “Mind if I join you?”
Wille jolted, blinking. For a moment he wondered if he was hallucinating the dark-haired singer from earlier. But no, that was him alright. Perched on the opposite edge of the bed. No, swing, his addled brain corrected. Seat?
“Oh, uh, sure. Yeah.” Wille bolted up to a seated position, flushing pink. “Of course.” He tried to subtly brush the back of his hand over his mouth to check for drool tracks.
“You didn’t have to get up,” the other man said, grinning as he scooted further up onto the mattress. “I didn’t mean to interrupt your nap. There just aren’t any other free spots.”
Wille glanced around and saw that it was true, the lounge had begun to fill since he had staked out his spot some unknown amount of time earlier.
“I wasn’t sleeping,” Wille protested, but as soon as the words were out he caught the other man’s teasing smirk. “I was… resting my eyes.”
The other man snorted in a way that should be unattractive but somehow Wille found profoundly sexy. “If you say so.”

So I have what may be an unpopular opinion / spicy take, but stay with me - the more I watch the Wilhelm and Simon end of episode 5 scene (the Lucia hug), the more I find it tears my heart to pieces rather than providing any kind of coming together or cathartic release.
Has anyone else felt the same?
Because the longer I've had to ruminate on the progression of the relationship between Wilhelm and Simon, the way they crash together, the way there's so much left unsaid, unrevealed, avoided before them being torn apart, I just, I find the Lucia scene so fucking painful.
For both of them, but honestly a big part of my heart breaks for Simon. He asks, So you blamed everything on Alexander? And what does he hear from Wilhelm here? No one said anything about you. But Simon's not having that shit, his last conversation with his (Prince, crush, friend; now Crown Prince and lover) was a shit fight where he realised Wilhelm thought - heard Wilhelm say - that he considered the reputation of his family first and any negative consequences for Simon second. Simon shakes his head, shakes his head again, no, no, no. Do you expect me to thank you? Or what. And it's inflection is: thank you for not throwing me under this bus filled with you and your noble white privileged cronies taking their free ride through life; thank you for finally realising this may have been some of my shit but this is also definitely some of your shit too; thank you for instead pulling the trolley lever to crush the only other body in the equation that looked least like you, talked least like you, behaved and moralised least like you, how fucking kind of you.
(And Wilhelm was in a tough spot, I'm not denying that, but shit, it really is just wealth begets power begets safety in this world, isn't it? Does Wille even clock that?)
He says, I just wanted you to know and Simon's still shaking his head, shaking his head (his face tells us he's again thinking, how fucking kind of you).
Wilhelm says, I just didn't want to lose you. You're the only one here I feel I can actually talk to. And at this, at the painful surrender from Wilhelm, Simon freezes. Pauses, and we know he's thinking, dear God there's no way in hell I want to lose you either, and at the combination of this and Wilhelm looking up at him with wet lashes, and Simon crumbles.
He crumbles, splinters, the grains of sand composing his existence falling through his own two hands, own ten fingers where he stretches them out to clutch at Wilhelm, hold him, show him he's needed, give him the love that makes him burn so bright, laugh so loud, stand so tall upright and proud.
But this moment, this exhale, flutter of Simon's lashes, nudge of his head is, to me, beginning to look like... Not the beginning (another beginning) of Simon's promise to Wilhelm, but the end (another end) of a promise Simon's made to himself long ago, before we met him. A promise to know his worth, to speak his mind, to never compromise where it's non-negotiable to allow him to sleep at night, to speak with love, to pride himself in and speak of his love. Simon came into this room wanting something from Wilhelm, and I don't believe he received it. He instead falls back into his pattern of boundless caring, of overcompensating, of making himself, his thoughts and his words smaller to lovingly cradle the emotional needs of everyone else in the room, fighting their demons with no thought to his own monsters under the bed, in the cupboard, in his head.
In this moment, Wilhelm doesn't give him enough. You're the only one here I feel I can actually talk to is not enough. It's not. Simon deserves at least an I'm sorry (and Wilhelm does as well, for that matter, there's plenty Simon's left unsaid too). And Simon just takes these tiny puzzle pieces of truth Wilhelm's willing to give, adds a chunk of himself he really can't afford to lose into the package and wraps Wilhelm up in this blanket of love because fuck, they love each other, they really fucking do, but is that enough? Is that enough?!
I believe this moment is one Simon looks back on, when considering what to say to Wilhelm when he returns from the Palace in episode 6. Think he clutches tightly to this moment, to steady his spine. I believe this is a moment Simon never wants to repeat, because it must have been so fucking scary, the feeling of loving someone so much you feel yourself remoulding your existence to fit the shape of them, and looking back realising they were holding steady to their concrete frame and expecting you to pour yourself like custard into their unchanging entity.
This scene tears me to fucking pieces, because it's the two of them at their lowest, both falling back on trauma-acquired behaviours that don't serve any long term relationship of theirs, placing a bandaid over a stab wound. I want to yell at them that this hit the femoral artery, that they're bleeding out, that it's just a matter of time.
But I know they won't listen, can't hear me, because what reason would they have to believe me? They're in each other's arms, right? That's enough, right? (For now, perhaps. Perhaps for now.)
Yes, yes and once again yes!!!
They communicate, yes, but there is so much left unsaid between the two of them. So many I'm sorry's from Wille missing.
Maybe if they would have more time, time without added drama, Simon would have spoken his truth and Wille would have seen that his problems are not bigger than Simon's, that his way of thinking and seeing the world is not always right, that Simon is not only there to be a comfort to him and has a voice too. And maybe he would have apologized for all the things he did and said. But maybe not... Maybe they would have gone on playing their part and that would have broken their relationship in the end anyway.
Absolutely. Both the OP and the addition. Although, to be fair to Wille, he doesn’t say it TO Simon (and he should’ve). But earlier in 1.05, when Wille tells the Society boys to blame the drugs on Alexander, he says something interesting.
“Alexander will be fine. He’ll end up at some school in Switzerland.”
The unspoken implication is that Simon, in Alexander’s shoes, would not be fine. The headmistress wouldn’t just expel him, she’d probably also call the cops. And Simon’s whole future would be damaged, because of one stupid mistake he made at 16. He would not end up in Switzerland, far from it.
Probably for the first time in Wille’s life, he’s actually thinking about the fact that Simon has a very different path through life than he and his very privileged classmates do. That, oh, Simon thinks his own family is just as important as the royal family (which I’m quite sure nobody had ever said to Wille before). Is it possible Simon could be right?
For the first time (and sadly, also the last) in 1.05, it’s implied that Wille is thinking about how life events affect Simon differently because he isn’t cushioned by wealth, inherited privilege, or white skin. And it’s so interesting! And I really wish Wille had talked to Simon about it.
And of course, at the start of 2.01, Alexander’S privilege relative to Simon is reiterated. Despite having been expelled in Season 1, Alexander reappears at Hillerska at the start of the new term. Rather than send his son to a boarding school in Switzerland, Ulf Brage has chosen instead to make Alexander’s expulsion go away. The other Society boys say in 20.1 that Alexander’s dad has bribed the Hillerska board of trustees to pretend the drug thing never happened and re-admit him.
Simon’s mom couldn’t have bribed his way out of trouble. And I wish we’d seen a little more of Wille realizing that Simon’s life experience and his own are very different. Also that Simon’s left wing beliefs are not just an attractive and cool rebellion. Simon actually believes he’s as important as the Crown Prince of Sweden.
Also, excellent point from OP that the kid the Society boys got to take the fall was the only non-white kid involved. And the one with the least culpability.
Yeah, Alexander is insulated by his father’s wealth, but he’s not as insulated as if he were a rich white boy.
Also I want to really highlight these lines that came before: "In this moment, Wilhelm doesn't give him enough" (from @disruptedthesky) and "Wille would have seen that his problems are not bigger than Simon's, that his way of thinking and seeing the world is not always right, that Simon is not only there to be a comfort to him and has a voice too" (from @iloveilovei). Just: big YESes to both of those. And expanding on these really important points:
I know people often see the Lucia hug as sweet and comforting, but to me it just reeks of selfishness. I'm honestly not even blaming Wille for that - he's a child and hasn't been taught to think differently (well, not taught from an empathetic angle anyway - he's just been cruelly chided to conform).
But Wille's whole speech is just "I need / I want / I'm afraid..." It's great to express oneself and let the other person know where you're coming from. But this is ACTUALLY supposed to be about Simon, not about Wille and his fears and his needs. It's not cute that he's calling Simon the only one he can talk to and the person he needs around (not in the context of that particular convo anyway).
Because Simon was the one who was almost expelled. Simon is the one who is continuously othered and marginalized - and now scapegoated, too. I know Wille probably really is trying the best that he can & the best that he knows how, but I always feel so annoyed with him anyway because this particular conversation is NOT supposed to be about you and how you need to have a comfort-person around, and how you can't lose having someone to talk to. Simon is not supposed to be his emotional "servant."
Again, I know he's just a kid. But I always find myself wishing that he would have had the (adult) emotional maturity to re-focus on Simon and Simon's needs there. That he would have said something much more loving, like: "I would never want you to go through that. I can't stand the idea of losing you - and the idea of you losing this. I want to protect you for you and not exclusively only for myself." Because that's how we show love!!! (Or, that seems like an ideal to me anyway.)
I love the original post from @disruptedthesky because this inflection was always how I understood the Lucia exchange, only to realize it's commonly read by fans as more straightforwardly moment of hurt, comfort, and sweet connection.
Watch the looks on Simon's face too, as he embraces Wilhelm. It's one of the only times we see him cry. He looks pained, almost grimacing. His expression is one of grief. He is comforting Wille, they are comforting one another, but this hurts.
Even their faces: Wille's eyes are closed as he leans his forehead against Simon's, taking solace in Simon's soothing hands in his hair and on his back. His eyes are still closed as he ducks forward for that desperate, snotty little kiss.
But Simon? Simon is stroking his hands through the hair on the nape of Wille's neck, watching him through slitted eyes.
I think Wille is feeling relief: he feels he did it, this risky plan has worked, Simon isn't walking away, Simon is forgiving him, Simon is here.
Simon on the other hand? I think he's feeling perhaps even more desperate than when he walked into that room. Loved, wanted, needed by Wille? Yes. But as @disruptedthesky said, that's not enough here.
And the final moments of the episode play this out in explosive fashion.
Wille believes he's succeeded in forging this tenuous standoff, but all the secrets - or everything that's been left unsaid - that everyone is keeping from one another (yes, Simon from Wille too) blow up almost immediately.
Wille's No one said anything about you in relation to the drugs implodes 5 minutes later when everyone is saying everything about Simon after August posts the video.
In both cases, Wille is scarcely in the line of fire - but it's his reputation and standing that "have to" be safeguarded because of his position.
The original post was made before before season 2 but Wille and Simon's conversation in the library in 2.0 just amplifies their original observations: in the library scene, Wille expresses the same self-absorption (I'm not judging him for this, he's a desperate teenager under immense pressure with virtually no emotional support): "But Simon, you're the only one I feel I can talk to."
But this time, Simon doesn't cave. "But Wille, please. Don't you realize you hurt me?"
