Something I’ve realized that makes Ruby Rose stand out from a lot of other protagonists is that, unlike most heroes, she doesn’t get pulled into adventure, she goes looking for it.

What do I mean by that? A criticism of Ruby that used to crop up a lot was that she lacked any of her own initiative, that she only did what others told her to do and nothing else; she goes to Haven because Qrow told her to, she waits for the Battle Of Haven because Ozpin told her to, ect.

What I’m realizing is that compared to your average YA hero, Ruby shows a remarkable amount of initiative. So many heroes would gladly still be back in their simple everyday lives if circumstances didn’t force them into being a hero, and will take every opportunity to tell you so; Harry Potter, Katniss Everdeen, pretty much any YA or isekai protagonist, they’ll all spend the majority of their story bemoaning being forced to save the world when they just want to be normal.

Ruby, in the very first episode, makes clear she is explicitly looking for the chance to become a hero, and never needs to be pushed or prodded by fate. The way she goes about doing so is largely decided by others, in the first five volumes anyway (because she actually listens to the advice of people she feels are wiser and more experienced than her, also unlike most protags), but she would still be doing something heroic if left to her own devices.

Watching my bi friends’ identities get erased when they‘re in m/f relationships makes me think it’s even MORE important to write bi characters in m/f relationships and then be REALLY BLATANT about the fact that one or both of them is bi.
