Also, from the limited amount of research I’ve done, the only ones regretting it are the ones forced in to cis conformity and sterilisation by the very gatekeepers themselves. Not to mention the woefully outdated information, techniques, and language they use. Or the fact that the service is operated exclusively by cis people

A pretty good example is the VUmc clinic in Amsterdam, which is notoriously conservative and intense in its gate keeping. Over it’s entire history the clinic reported 35 people who ‘regretted’ their decision, out of 4000.

I looked into the details. I can’t find the research now so I’ll have to do it from memory. Turns out those were mainly two groups:

Trans women who absolutely still identified as trans women but who experienced so much violence after coming out that they felt their life might have been better if they had never come out as trans

Trans people who chose more medical procedures than they really wanted under the pressure to look as cisgender as possible and because sterilization was mandatory for legal gender change until 2014.

There was 1 person who now identified as cisgender and felt they had never really been transgender. 1. out of 4000. Good luck finding a tattoo shop or marriage institution with rates like that.

And wanna know the best bit? Clinics that practice informed consent and let transgender people completely chose their own path have statistics just like that!

Gatekeeping is violence. Gatekeeping takes a very difficult moment in our lives and makes it about proving to a medical professional that we’re trans enough. Gatekeeping has allowed for all sorts of abuse over the years. Gatekeeping infringes on our basic right to control our ow bodies. Gatekeeping is responsible for a lot of harm in our lives. It has to go.

Y’all better stop thinking you can talk to anyone on the internet any type of way, especially when you struggle making calls to people in real life.
