The day broke over the land and filtered into Rapunzel's window in bright, welcome rays. It had always been her favorite time of day up in her tower. The new day was full of possibilities, wonders and places to explore if even if it was only in books.

Now, she had everything she could dream of and more. She had been back in Corona for a few weeks now and life was perfect; only it wasn't. If Rapunzel was being honest the first few days had been easy. Now things were complicated. There was so much to learn and so much to do.

And yet, Rapunzel found herself escaping her room to go search the castle for either one or both of her parents. There were so many things to ask, so many things to learn, and so much to do.

Cassandra had her compass out barely seconds after she touched the ground, never one for wasting time; but Rapunzel’s question caught her off-guard. “I… don’t know, actually.” It was weird. She’d seen grass nearly every day of her life, but when she walked on it, she always had her boots on. The feel of grass wasn’t just something she didn’t know, it was something she hadn’t even considered a thing to be known.

Barely a minute out of the tower, and Rapunzel was discovering things she’d never even think of.

She shook the thought off. Focus, Cassandra. “The main city’s to the west,” she explained. “You wanted to see the lanterns, right? That’s the best place to see them. Along with basically everything else of note around here.” Such as the castle Rapunzel belonged to, though she kept the thought to herself for now.

Rapunzel stared at Cassandra a moment considering her answer. Was she not supposed to wonder about things? Did the world look different when you were not stuck in a tower away from all the evils and bad things in the world? Cassandra did not seem evil like Mother always warned her existed in the world.

“Which city is that?” Rapunzel asked trying to recall the maps in her books she had read in her tower. Come to think of it, Mother had never really kept local maps in the tower. 

Rapunzel stared wandering towards all the unknown things and plants she had only seen in her books. “The lanterns?” She asked her attention snapping back to what was really important. Perhaps, she would have time later to look at all the new things around her.  “Then what are we waiting for?”

Corona was only a city Rapunzel had read on a map and now here she was; a bit lost and confused but she was there. All the books in her tower had not prepared her for life on the outside. However, she was pretty sure Mother was lying about people having pointy teeth. Were there other lies she had been told?

“Have you ever seen the lights that float in the sky?” Rapunzel asked the first lady she ran into. Surely someone from Cornona would know what she was talking about. “I mean the lanterns.” People had told her they were actually lanterns.

“It is my birthday wish to see them!” She told the woman happily as she pushed a long strand of blonde hair out of her face.

It would be several days before mother got back and Rapunzel, for once in her life, was happy to not have to expect another soul for a few days. Surely she would be in big trouble if it was discovered she was outside her tower wondering about, but it was a risk she was willing to take. Then again, how on earth was she going to get back up in her tower? Getting down had been the easy part.

Or you know, she could explore and worry about that later. 

“Is the grass always this cool?” Rapunzel wondered outside as she touched her toes to the cool dew laden grass. “Where do I even go? Where is there to go?” She asked the stranger beside her.

Rapunzel was not sure why she had left her tower. Sure the lights were enticing and a mystery that needed to be solved, but there was a deeper, unexploitable calling. It was as if some higher power was calling her to leave her sanctuary and see what was outside the window.

Well, she was going to be eighteen tomorrow and now was as good of a time as any. Long as the men with pointy teeth, a plague, and a bandit did not come and get her. No worries, she could do this! It did not matter that Mother said she could not.

“Oi, excuse me,” Rapunzel started as she walked up to the first person she found on the path in the forest. “Do you know where we are?” Not that it would help her any she realized, she didn’t know where anything was.

The air was unusually hot in Agrabah but Rapunzel was not certain she hated it. There was an electricity to it. The streets were still abuzz with commotion, dealings, and an activity level that was not all that common in Corona. Life there was great but different. 

Rapunzel’s parents had wondered if she was asking to go on these journeys to meet other princesses for an escape, to find herself, or for something completely different. Truthfully, it was kind of all of the above.

“Oh, excuse me,” Rapunzel started as she looked at the woman who had some how ended up beside her. “I am a bit lost, could you help me? I have no idea how to get anywhere around here.”

Okay, she seemed in. That was a good start. It wouldn’t exactly do to throw Rapunzel over her shoulder and drag her to the kingdom; if they could go on a trip together, that would be a better idea. Especially because it would give her time to talk to her and confirm her suspicions. Not exactly great to stroll in and announce a stranger as the missing princess if she wasn’t 100% sure.

At her next remark, Cassandra was a little confused, looking out the window as she pointed. She didn’t have a rope on her, how would she-

“Ah.”

Well, that was… unusual. “You’re absolutely sure? I don’t wanna break your neck or anything.” That’d be a great start to their journey. “Besides, how do you get down?” Catch me was not exactly an option from this height. She… she knew that, right?

“Nonsense,” she told Cassandra as she shuffled her towards the window. If Mother could do it back and forth several times a day, someone Cassandra’s size would be easy. She certainly was a lot smaller even though she would never voice that thought out loud. “Much the same way you will,” Rapunzel told her as if it was a silly question to ask.

“Come on Pascal,” she told the little chameleon as she tucked it onto his usual spot on her shoulder. “If we’re going to be going, we need to do this now or we might run out of time.” She wanted to leave plenty of time for them to get to wherever you needed to be to see the lanterns and get back before it was discovered that she was gone.

Once Cassandra was safely on the ground, Rapunzel reached for her hair thrown over the usual hook. This was just like repelling around the tower when she got bored. “Here we go,” she told herself before she jumped letting herself go whizzing down till she was just inched above the grass. “Oh,” she said as she reached her toes towards the green blades she had never felt. “It’s cooler then I thought,” she mused out loud before realizing she must look like an idiot.

“Right, which way?” She said trying to keep her attention from all the new sensations and feelings overwhelming her a little bit.

"Who is there?” Rapunzel called out into the inky darkness of the night not expecting an answer. Things went bump in the night right? It was usually an animal or a teenage girl’s overactive imagination. It was just her imagination she told herself again as if she repeated it long enough it would make it true.

Sighing, she brushed her long blonde hair out of her way and continued to peer out into the darkness. “I can hear you,” she told the sound in the darkness. “If someone is out there, reveal yourself and your purpose for wandering around at night.” She called out again hoping she sounded braver than she felt.

Rapunzel was quiet as she stood and waited to be introduced to Arendelle’s queen. If she had learned anything from her time in her tower, it was how to be patient. Instead she ran a hand through her blonde hair and gazed at her surroundings. The architecture was different than back home but not in a bad way. It was pleasing on the eyes and seemed to move in a way that lead your eye from one feature to the next.

It wasn’t until one of the guards called her name gently that she snapped her attention back to the task at hand. Her parents had sent her to introduce herself to the Queen. It had been a while since Arendelle had been open to visitors and what better way than to get started on the right feet.

“Your Majesty.” Rapunzel said softly with a polite bow of her head. She forwent the curtsey because while she was not a queen herself, Rapunzel was the Crowned Princess of Corona and it seemed a bit odd to curtsey if she was being honest. “It’s an honor to meet you.”

That instant excitement followed by dismay as she realized her situation felt so… familiar. No, it wasn’t exactly the same, and she wouldn’t try to claim as much: for all her restrictions in life, at least Cassandra had lived fairly normally. She couldn’t imagine what Rapunzel had been through.

This part, though? She knew this. They both had cages; Rapunzel’s just happened to be a lot smaller.

“Hey, don’t worry about it.” She wouldn’t have to, after all; once she knew the truth she wouldn’t want to return, Cassandra was sure. But they had to get there first to prove it. “She won’t even know you’re gone. What you do when no one’s looking is your business.”

Cassandra looked back out the window, then, glancing nervously at the ground below. Did the tower get taller? That was a long way down. “So, uh… any idea how to get out of here besides the ‘scenic route’?”

Rapunzel mulled over the concept that she could do something and no one would no. Was that the same as directly disobeying an order from Mother? “I mean it would only be for a day...” She mused as if she had already made her decision and she was simply trying to alleviate her own feelings.

“Same way as everyone else,” Rapunzel pointed out not realizing that Cassandra had no idea how Mother Gothel got in and out of the tower every day. “Right,” she said softly realizing she had jumped the gun a little bit. “You repel down,” she said hoping that shed a little more light on the situation.

“Off you go,” she told Cassandra as she tossed her hair out the window.
