My personal opinion on Curly (Mouthwashing (game)) is that he failed as captain the moment he didn't take Anya's sexual assault seriously and thought it was something he could fix by talking it out with Jimmy. As in, if someone discerns that their abuser is so dangerous that they have to hide weapons from them, then your responsibility as captain is to 1.) take your crewmate's judgment on the situation seriously and 2.) lock the fuck in and be on guard for the very real threat that is onboard your ship. Especially on a spaceship where you cannot risk the possibility of another person escalating to the point of violence
When Jimmy said "I'll take care of it" after Curly heavily implied that he knew that Anya was pregnant (and Jimmy implied that he didnt know what to do with his life going forward) and went into the cockpit, alarm bells should have been going off in his head. And Curly knew prior to this that they were going into a particularly rocky region of space! Of course, the blame rests squarely on Jimmy for attempting to kill everyone, but I think if Curly was a really really good captain, he would have taken the threat seriously and put safety first.
It really says so much about how misogynistic Curly is for him to know that Anya thinks Jimmy could be dangerous and still leave him alone in the cockpit anyway. And to think that the first thing he immediately says upon seeing Jimmy there with the system warnings is "Jim, tell me you didn't..." and not "What the fuck did you do!!" ? It's a nice touch (writing-wise) on precisely where Curly's priorities lie.
I think a lot more people understand the themes of toxic masculinity in Mouthwashing (game) than you some of you guys believe. There's just a lot more mileage in making fun of Jimmy than there is talking about Curly's reaction to Anya's rape and how it plays into larger behaviour of men when their friends are accused.
i'm beginning to think the Swansea is devs' favorite character and i love it so much. they made him an official dance playlist on Spotify, there's an achievement for letting yourself be axe murdered 10 times in a row called "The Good Ending", his keys in your inventory could've totally been just a normal picture of some keys but they put in the extra effort to give him a silly swan charm, he gets multiple epic speeches, there's an entire character dedicated to hyping him up, they posted a video of him twerking Jimmy to death. mark my words they're going to turn him into a marketable plushie any day now
Thinking about the meaning behind Curly ignoring the dead pixel Anya points out to him while Swansea shatters the whole screen with an axe after finding out what happened to Anya oooooooh I love this game so much
watched a friendplay mouthwashing i had only seen the demo when it first cameout so watchingthe full thing sure was an experience !

man, i have so many thoughts about this game and i just.. AAGHHRGH.
mouthwashing calling out certain men, who wouldnt ever hurt a woman themselves, still holding onto friendships with abusive men and even dilute their horrible actions, is something i really appreciate from the story. while i think curlys intentions were good at heart and i think he truly felt terrible about what happened to anya, he still put jimmy and his friendship before her and suffered the consequences for not punishing him. really shows off how men can be biased towards each other in many different ways, not just the victim-blaming way.
while i totally understand that some might think curly not taking proper action dismisses anyas storyline, some even saying her being assaulted wasnt a necessary element and just there to add another reason to jimmy being terrible, its unfortunately very realistic for that to happen in the real world.
a woman being sexually abused in the workplace, she reports on it to her higher up, only for it to feel like her cries were left unheard because her abuser never got a proper punishment, instead he basically got a promotion in a twist of events. thats what makes her storyline so horrifying and so real.
at least thats how i interpreted it, i am simply an amateur when it comes to story analysis.
Dying Star.
I forgot to name it properly oops!
Also I did indeed cook with this one.
I think it's super interesting how Jimmy's fear of Anya and the baby manifests in his mind as the Pony Express mascot.
Unlike every other character, Anya ISN'T in Jimmy's guilt/regret hallucinations near the end. He sees Daisuke walk towards the dark, he sees Swansea chase him through a cemetery, he sees Curly on fire in front of him but ANYA? Anya isn't given that kind of treatment. No, instead, we see a hallucination of the baby, a tiny horse in a womb that has no face attached to it (Anya's face specifically, all he sees is the womb), turning into a deformed monster that hunts him down the moment it's born.
Polle (the baby) is seen as a danger in Jimmy's head in the beginning of the game too, after he walks out of the cockpit. The more he walks, the louder the baby noises get and the more deformed Polle looks when he runs into it!
Jimmy doesn't give a damn about Anya, nor does he regret anything he did to her, but he is scared of that baby and what it means. The living proof of what he did to Anya, manifesting as a monster that hunts him down throughout the game.
