A few things to address before we start, first this will have a mixture of platonic and romantic yanderes in it obviously, and I would totally be down for listing those in a separate post. Second, I'm an anime Dub watcher, and so I haven't been able to watch past episode 22, this means no spoilers (both anime/manga) please. Your parents are dead. Nothing matters anymore.
Life in the slums was awful, your home didn't have running water most of the time, food was expensive and hard to come by, and everyone looked at you with disgust. When you were little, you'd often watch the upper class with wide eyes, wondering if there was ever a chance you could be like them one day. You wanted to wear their fancy clothes, eat their delicious food, and read all their expensive books. But like most kids in the slums, that was only a fantasy. Even then, with all the suffering, all the pain and misery, you still had your family. Mom and Dad were everything to you, working hard to get you everything you wanted, food, clothes, toys especially. You were poor, it was hard for anyone to ignore that, but your dad would often find toys for you, fixing them up for you so you had something to play with. Your Mom would make the most amazing meals out of basically nothing. Together, they'd find books, worn as they were, too read to you before you went to bed.
You were poor, you weren't ignorant to that, but it was your family, and it was the best thing you had in this horrible world.
And then they were gone.
They left one night, saying they needed to go out and get some things, leaving you alone for a few days. You waited for them, waited to eat, waited to leave, until you were so hungry everything hurt, and so you left to find them, though that didn't take long. You pushed through crowds of onlookers, finally breaking past to see your mom and dad strung up, dangling over the dark expanse below. You couldn't say anything, couldn't even scream before your parents were released. Did they see you? You thought. Did they know you'd be here? You wondered. None of that mattered, because they were dead, and now you were all on your own.
No one cares for criminals, or the children of criminals. No one cared as you mourned, no one stopped you as you crawled to the edge, overlooking the darkness, wondering if you looked hard enough you could see your parents. No one cared, and so you learned not to either. Your parents died when you were 17, and for four years you were numb to everything. You barely ate, you barely left home. You hated everything outside of it, the people were cruel, mocking you and your parents. The ones that didn't directly speak to you looked at you with this stupid look on their face--you hated them.
Whenever you did leave, the edge called to you with memories of your parents' cries, building up in your head until it became too much to handle. You thought of the faces of those in the crowd with so much anger it hurt, your nails digging into your palms, your teeth clenching so hard you thought they'd break. You hated all of them, you hated everyone, but you hated yourself more. Why didn't you say anything? Why didn't you stop them? It consumed your every thought, your every moment. For four years you existed in a state driven by hatred and anger, and it drove you back to the edge on the anniversary your parents died.
You truly didn't mean to step off the edge, it just ended up happening. Maybe something within you was driving your thoughts, making you think like it was your only option. Maybe someone said something, looked at you someway, but that didn't matter, because the feeling of falling felt so liberating, as if all the pain and hatred would go away.
But that's not what happened. One moment you were falling, and the next you were waking up to a horrible smell. The world around you felt, and smelt, awful. Your body also did not feel good, but that was nothing in comparison to the trash. It was everywhere, more than what's in the slums. It was all around you, holding you in a twisting embrace that clearly crushed your fall. You waited what felt like hours, but were probably more like minutes before getting up and surveying your surroundings, quickly realizing how fucked you were.
In that moment, you wanted to wallow, you wanted to scream and cry, this wasn't what you wanted to happen! You couldn't stand, so you punched the trash around you, sobbing as you wondered how this could possibly happen. You cried and cried, until you couldn't possibly cry anymore, realizing in that moment that no one was going to come and comfort you.
Your parents are dead and nothing matters anymore.
During your breakdown, you found what looked like a hammer and a tool belt. It didn't take long to find other things to build the semblance of a home. The air was awful, but inside you could insulate it with the few blankets you could find. You surround your fort with bottles, wind chimes that alert you to anyone or anything around you. The fort was covered by trash, so far enough away it looked just like a normal pile. Inside, you found that small enough plants could grow just enough to be edible, even if they didn't taste good. Not that it mattered anymore, not that anything mattered.
You lived like this for a bit, not that you could really tell the time--you spend most of your time hidden away, unless you heard any noise. Most of the time it was people looking for stuff to steal, get too close, easy to beat up and abandon near where those strange monsters usually roamed. Other than that, it was a peaceful existence, not too different from living in the slums. Sometimes you wondered, what was the point of all this--if you're just signed to end up in the same place where you began. That was until they showed up...
How did you not hear them? You wondered when you found four random people in your fort. Of course the one time when you went to go looking for resources something had to go wrong. You didn't let any of them speak, lunging at the one with tattoos (who wouldn't shut up about your lackluster vegetables). You weren't a fighter by choice, but usually beating people with hammers always got them to shut up. But you guessed this guy was different because hitting him in the face with a hammer only made him talk more, those the kids with him seemed to take offense. The feral looking one with the white hair looked like he wanted to bite your head off, that is if mister blabber mouth didn't stop him.
The red head with the weird hair took your hammer from you, and the staff forced you to sit down--which is how you learned why they were here. Apparently--they learned you were from the sphere, and apparently they just wanted to know if it was true. The loud mouth one smiled at you as blood fell down his face, and it made you want to punch him. You weren't stupid, you knew people didn't like those from the sphere, so you lied. You said no, you saw the white haired boy deflate, and listened as the staff wielding boy told them that this was a waste of time.
You'd thought that would be the end of this, staring down the tattooed man with a look that only conveyed annoyance, before he moved so he could sit closer to you. He motioned to the girl, she passed your hammer and tool belt, and asked if you knew what a vital instrument was. You didn't answer, and he explained anyway. He asked if you knew that he and his friends kept pretty good tabs on the wastelands, and that they knew someone other than them was killing trash beasts, you didn't answer. He asked if you wanted to leave this "totally amazing and not trashy fort", his words not yours, you didn't answer.
You could tell the kids didn't like you, but granted you weren't trying to be liked. You told the tattooed man you'd consider going back with him if he gave you your stuff back, he did immediately, with sighs from the others around you. The drive back was long, filled with mostly silence as the man, who called himself Enjin, talked about cleaners and anything else that came to mind, you didn't respond. You wondered if the guy had a screw loose or something, he wouldn't shut up. It felt like hours before you arrived at your destination.
You spent a few days with the cleaners, mostly not leaving your room. You didn't really care about getting to know the others, even when Enjin probed you to leave. That wasn't until Rudo, the white haired kid, came to your room. He was so...small, he made your heart clench. He didn't say anything until you let him in your room. As he sat down in front of you, you recognized the same hatred, the same anger, the same pain, catching you off guard. In a straightforward voice, he asked you if you were from the sphere, and you couldn't lie this time. In a moment, his eyes, which looked so much like yours, lightened almost slightly, and your breath caught in your throat.
Your parents were dead and nothing matters anymore--but maybe it didn't have to be that way.
He asked you questions about how you fell down, if you remember anything, if you knew a way back up, but you couldn't answer. All you could think about was the hate that filled you, that made you feel so alone, that drove you to the point you're at now, and how you can see all of that reflected in the eyes of the child in front of you. It overwhelmed you with so many emotions that you couldn't help but cry, wrapping the boy up in a hug. You felt him still in your hold, but you couldn't care, for the first time since your parents died, you felt like something mattered, and it felt great.
The next day during breakfast you strode up to Enjin, ignoring his surprised face to ask if you could talk to their boss. He didn't wait a second before whisking you away to meet with Corvus. You honestly didn't think he'd be so welcoming, since you did nearly try to kill Enjin a few days ago, but you were pleasantly surprised when he reached out his hand to shake, welcoming you to the cleaners.
You made an extra effort, despite how hard it was, to interact with the others. Most of them, mainly the kids, were actually pretty great. Zanka and Riyo, once they warmed up to you, taught you about how to actually use your vital instrument, in ways that weren't just bashing people's heads in. Rudo was definitely a weird kid, but he liked spending time with you, at least you think. You thought you weirded him out with the hug, but he seemed to like you. He stuck around you a lot, during missions and whenever you were chilling at headquarters. You didn't mind, though, spending time with others is good for him. You don't want to see him become like you.
Enjin was definitely your least favorite, he talked a lot, saying you needed to "get out of your shell", whatever that meant. Sometimes he'd take you out to eat and talk with you about your time with them, how you were doing and all that. Those were the only times you felt like you weren't dragging your feet through a conversation.
The other cleaners were also pretty nice, you had a soft spot for team child and the supporters. They felt more down to earth, but granted you just felt weird with Enjin. Bro felt like someone you could actually have a conversation with, and Gris was always very kind to you, an unusual kindness you hadn't experienced in years. Tamsy was one of those that made you feel pretty weird, he was too quiet, and sometimes if you were perceptive enough you could catch him looking at you from across the room.
But despite all the weirdness, all the oddities, you couldn't help but feel content here. It wasn't perfect, you still hated your life most of the day, especially whenever your parents came to mind. But now, you had a reason to push through it, because at least now, something mattered to you.
