Priyanka Chopra-Jonas to be the new Max Factor ambassador - Interview
Cooperation with Max Factor
1. What does the title of Max Factor ambassador mean to you?
"Max Factor is a brand with a huge heritage that is constantly evolving at the same time. I am glad to be part of this evolution and the next chapter in its history."
2. Max Factor is an iconic brand that was born in Hollywood. And which icon, past or present, inspires you the most?
"There are so many amazing Hollywood icons, but my favorite is Audrey Hepburn - the timeless classic beauty. Also Meryl Streep and the incredibly talented Viola Davis. I also love Lupita Nyong'o and of course Marilyn Monroe."
Makeup
1. What is your absolute favorite makeup product?
"I love lipsticks! I don't like heavy ones, so Max Factor Color Elixir in the shade of Sun Bronze is my favorite. It gives color but at the same time is slightly shiny, iridescent and makes my skin look fresh and healthy. I also love Chili - a deeper shade. red, both in the liquid version and in the classic lipstick. "
2. What is the difference between your day makeup and evening makeup?
"I never leave the house without red lipstick. I think that every woman should always have her favorite shade of red in her purse. During the day I use liquid lipstick, and at night I reach for a lipstick that perfectly hides fatigue."
3. The best makeup advice you've heard?
"You don't need too much makeup! Well-groomed skin is the best base for make-up. And the lipstick can be applied to lips and cheeks."
Beauty
1. Where do you get your inspiration from? From friends, family, makeup artists? Or maybe from social media, magazines, catwalks?
"I learn the most about trends from make-up artists. I'm lucky to be able to work with the best in this industry, my face becomes their canvas. I don't have to look for this knowledge anywhere else, because everything starts with them, they create trends."
2. Your favorite red carpet look?
"There were a few 20 years ago, but now this is definitely my Jason Wu dress from the first Emmy Awards I attended. The red, tailor-made, matched the red carpet perfectly."
3. Do you have any patents on how to look good during virtual meetings and interviews, for example at zoom?
"I had virtual meetings earlier than most of us - I think many people thought they would get back to work sooner. I virtually promoted movies, books, gave interviews. But instead of using a webcam in my laptop, I installed a separate digital quality camera, and additionally I ordered lamps on Amazon so that I have the right lighting. It's also good to have a corner or a wall behind you, check what is going on in the background, make sure that no one will pass behind us. As for clothes - take care of what is upstairs , up to the waist and wear a comfortable hem. I usually choose a nice shirt, moisturize my skin, apply a little makeup, style my hair, put on earrings and I'm ready. "
4. What are your ways to make a good selfie?
"Straighten your arm, raise it above your head and smile! My best selfies come from the distance and from above."
5. What would you say to yourself when you were 20?
"I would say it will pass. When I was 20 I felt like one big mistake and a walking disaster. After 30 I started to understand that it is not like that, everything passes and time heals all wounds. I would say to myself: relax a little."
1. When do you feel most beautiful?
"When I am sure what I do, what I look like, how I feel."
2. What makes you feel confident?
"I always regain my strength. I know that I have my strengths at work and in everyday life and I focus on them. I know what I am good at. yourself: you do it well and that's why you are here, therefore go and do what you have to do.
3. You use your social channels to support women's rights and environmental issues. Why is this important to you?
"I believe that each of us has a responsibility to society. I learned it myself at a very young age. I grew up in India, where poverty and wealth go hand in hand. I realized then that everyone who has privileges also has a responsibility. it's a privilege to have a house, food. It's not about changing your life and becoming a philanthropist, but taking care of what is important to us, what we would like to change. Ghandi said: Be the change that you want to see in the world "And that's where it all starts for me."
4. What would you advise young, aspiring actresses?
"Even though it just seems to be about red carpets, designer outfits and glamor, it's hard work. Today, for example, I spent the whole day in the water, hit by the waves, and it crossed my mind that this scene, which lasts two minutes in the movie, I shoot for a few days. It takes a lot of effort, concentration, you can't take a vacation or time off. Being part of this industry is just about giving yourself up to work. If you're not afraid of it, this is the place for you. "
5. Of all your professional achievements, what are you most proud of?
"Difficult question! There are many such things, but I am most proud when I look at my family, my mother, husband, brother, my friends. When I see pride in their eyes, it is the greatest recognition of my achievements. Besides, I do not rest on my laurels. , I always strive for something more, I set myself new goals and challenges. "
Questions about products
FACE
1. What should be your perfect foundation?
"Light and slightly opaque. I don't want to feel like wearing a mask. I'm very busy and usually wear makeup in the car, so I love the FaceFinity All-Day Flawless Foundation because it's a base, concealer and foundation all rolled into one."
2. Do you apply the foundation with a brush or with your fingers?
"First of all, I blend it, because the most important thing in my opinion is that the foundation is invisible. I like to use it for contouring or to hide imperfections, but I don't want a mask effect. First I apply it with my fingers and then I reach for a sponge to gently rub it before I'll use the powder. Just a little bit of product is enough, especially if it's a 3-in-1 like Facefinity. "
EYES
1. What do you pay attention to when choosing mascara?
"I'm obsessed with this. Each of us needs a mascara that doesn't weigh our lashes down and has a brush that lengthens them. Depending on your needs, you can use a little mascara or apply several layers for a more spectacular effect."
2. What do you like Divine Lashes Mascara for?
"I love it for the brush that gives the lashes volume, but does not stick them together or weigh them down. I do not like mascaras that give the effect of" spider legs "after one application. Divine Lashes provides maximum length and volume, but the final result depends on you how much you will put layers. "
3. Do you like to paint your eyes? What do you pay attention to when choosing eye shadow?
"Usually I'm on the run, I don't have time for multi-stage and long-lasting makeup, so I prefer palettes that are suitable for both daytime and evening wear, such as the Masterpiece Nude Palette. I like when my eyes are delicately emphasized and a choice of eight shades, from glossy to matte, gives a lot of room for experimentation. In the evening I can reach for darker shades and enhance my day look. "
4. What does your daily eye makeup look like?
"I love the mascara and a little bit of color on my eyelids. Divine Lashes Mascara curls my lashes quickly, and Masterpiece Nudes shades give my eyelids a little shine which always looks great in summer when there's more sun."
5. How do you paint your eyes for a great exit?
"I usually accentuate the eye contour with eyeliner and blend it lightly, sometimes I use full smoky eyes. I curl my lashes, apply False Lash Effect XXL mascara and I'm ready in two minutes."
MOUTH
1. What are your favorite shades of lipsticks? How do you choose the ones that suit you best?
"I love the Color Elixir in a slightly iridescent, shiny shade of Sunbronze and a deep red shade of Chili"
2. You often wear bright colors on your lips. What would you advise women who would like to experiment with a shade of lipstick but lack the courage?
"For me, using lipstick is all about fun, so try, test, experiment, combine colors. You can create the perfect shade yourself, if you haven't found one."
3. What do you pay attention to in the formula of lipsticks? Do you prefer shine or mat?
"I prefer mats, but sometimes I choose shine. I usually choose mats with shades of red because they look too flashy on the shiny version. But with more neutral shades I like a little shimmer."

PRIYANKA CHOPRA ON HER NEW FILM THE WHITE TIGER
“A cricket team!” Priyanka Chopra is laughing at her own words to describe how many children she wanted. “I do want children, as many as I can have. A cricket team? I’m not so sure.” She begs me to pay no attention to the foolish things she has sometimes said. She had once wanted to be a psychologist or an aeronautical engineer — but “just kept changing my mind”. Acting was an accident, a by-product of winning Miss World in 2000. First a Bollywood sensation, she crossed into American television, then married Nick Jonas of the Disney-famous Jonas Brothers. Now she’s executive producing, investing in tech and running a foundation to help educate the poor. The only early ambition she sounds not quite ready to give up is being prime minister of India. “I don’t know …” she hums. “That’s a long way off right now.”
I wouldn’t put it past her to try. “Dreamer” and “achiever” is how she describes herself on Twitter. On subjects such as bullying, racism and sexism her voice fills with compassion, so that even without seeing her you would swear her hand was pressed to her chest. She envisages a world, she says, where women have equal opportunity, regardless of the cultural or socioeconomic circumstance of their birth. She feels a moral obligation to use her “public platform” to amplify the voices of those whose — how can she put this? — “reach might not be as much as mine”. Her role is not just to entertain but to educate. “It’s what I can do to do my bit for the world.”
We have the time it takes to get from the white stucco house in Notting Hill she is renting to the shoot location of the romantic drama Text for You. When this wraps she’s co-starring in the thriller series Citadel with Richard Madden (of Bodyguard). The two projects will keep her in Britain until “the end of the year” — along with her rescue dog, Diana, who has 163,000 Instagram followers of her own.
We’re here to talk about The White Tiger, out on January 22, a Netflix special adapted from the 2008 Booker-winning novel by Aravind Adiga that Chopra co-stars in and has executive produced. It’s the revolutionary story of a poor but ruthless servant who murders his master, the westernised son of a feudal landlord, and steals his money to become a rich and successful businessman. It’s a commentary on India’s political corruption, caste and religious prejudice, the grinding lack of social mobility and the extraordinary social challenges the country faces as it modernises.
“I remember being extremely moved by the book, like, ten years ago,” Chopra says. “When I read in the trade magazines in LA that the movie was being made, I went after it. I told my agents that I want to be a part of it.” Although her role, Pinky Madam, is “small”, it’s a “substantial” plot driver, she says. Does her involvement reflect her sympathy for India’s hundreds of millions of poor? “This is a story of humanity that could have existed in any part of the world,” she says. “It just so happens to be told in India.”
The movie is an “uncomfortable mirror”, she says, that can be applied to different instances of social injustice. “I can only take my example of being in the entertainment business in America. South Asian culture is not represented as it should be.” She’s proud to be part of a generation of Asian actors — she includes Mindy Kaling, Aziz Ansari, Hasan Minhaj and Riz Ahmed — “that is really taking a step in the right direction in knocking down those doors and saying, ‘We need to be represented. We need to be included.’ ”
In this respect she has been a crusader: in 2014 she made history as the first Indian woman to secure the lead in an American primetime network drama and made the list of Time magazine’s most influential people in 2016. “When I started working in the US it was a bit of a struggle. I was pounding on doors demanding parts that were not defined by where I come from necessarily.” She was turned down for roles because of the colour of her skin. “It took me taking lots of different roles to get to a place where I can create opportunities.”
Chopra references her parents, Ashok and Madhu, a lot. Both were military doctors (although her mother now runs an aesthetic clinic in Mumbai). She describes the family as creative freethinkers: artistic, musical but also scientists. Their work and her education meant they were frequently separated, however. She spent her first three years in the care of grandparents while her parents were training. Like forces families everywhere, they lived a peripatetic life dictated by postings, but after her brother arrived when she was seven, she was sent to boarding school.
The family has it that Siddharth (Sid), Chopra’s brother, put her up for the Miss India beauty pageant, suggesting it to her mother as a cunning ploy to get his bedroom back. In Chopra’s descriptions the Miss World training sounds Pygmalion-esque, with intensive lessons in elocution and manners. But “it almost readied me for the business that I’m in right now. I was catapulted from high school to a world stage and being asked my opinion about worldly topics. And I grew up.”
The reason she won’t pooh-pooh pageantry is it taught her valuable lessons, not least it was “the first time I realised how good it felt to be the best in the room and I became competitive”; but also “I realised that confidence is not a trait that you’re born with, it’s something you teach yourself and hone. [It] gave me a sense of self and a sense of confidence, which I’ve carried my whole career.
The night she won (at the Millennium Dome in 2000) she hugged the crown all night. She insists it’s a feminist achievement because “it is about opportunity — being able to fast-track into a platform that gives you the ability to have a big showcase for whatever you might want to do”. She sees that pageants “are debatable, but I can only speak from my personal experience”. In the 20 years since winning, Chopra has chalked up more than 60 film credits. Does she have a feminist role model? “All the women who have worked for us to be able to have a voice right now,” she replies with admirable Miss World diplomacy.
Chopra has said that Jonas was drawn to her ambition, and certainly it’s a thing to behold. Aside from acting and politics, she is developing her business interests. She has a production company, Purple Pebble Productions, but she will also do more in tech. “Business is something I’ve really started enjoying. I’m launching something this year and I intend to dabble as much as I can.” So there is tech and also the environment. “For me environment and education are the two that we cannot ignore any more.” She was shocked when she discovered that her parents’ housekeeper couldn’t afford to send her ten-year-old daughter to school. Chopra resolved to pay for it. From there the Priyanka Chopra Foundation for Health and Education was founded, to which she donates 10% of her earnings, according to the Indian press. It provides education and medical care for 70 children (50 are girls). And through her role as a Unicef ambassador she is able to “advocate for kids around the world”.
Not least she has challenged Bollywood directors on the gender pay gap and was behind the launch of Bumble, the dating app that allows women to take the lead, in India. “I went to the launch of Bumble in New York,” she says by way of explanation. “I remember sitting next to Whitney [the founder] thinking, ‘How amazing that women get the first move. It’s so great for safety and for giving us the power.’ I thought it would be incredible to give women in India that opportunity as well.” She says that had she not met her husband she would “definitely” have used a dating app “and the one I would use would be Bumble”. She adds, amused: “But I’ve lost my opportunity now, haven’t I?”
Chopra’s pure drive and ambition — plus 59 million followers on Instagram and a further 27 million on Twitter — is an intimidating force. If anyone has the power to change things, she does.
The White Tiger is available to stream on Netflix from January 22
