Saint Rafqa Pietra

Saint Rafqa, also known as St. Rebecca, had a relatively happy childhood in Lebanon until her mother died when she was 7 years old. She decided to devote herself to God after Jesus told her “You will be a nun” and eventually entered the Lebanese Maronite Order. After years of living austerely and contemplatively, she asked Jesus to share in His sufferings. Immediately she suffered headaches and eye pain. The last 17 years of her life she was completely blind and paralyzed yet never complained and was joyful. When she died, a light appeared on her grave for 3 nights and the smell of violets emanated from it. She is called “The Flower of Lebanon.” Pope St. John Paul II canonized her in 2001.

“If you sexualize people, if you sexualize young people, if you sexualize the youth, you will bring down the family, you will bring down marriage, and you will create chaos in the whole of society,” Kuby said.
“So, [it] is given by God [that] we are born in two sexes. We are attracted to each other. And this attraction is … very strong [because it gives life]. If we do not respect the limits, this sexual drive will dominate us.”
“We see masses and masses of people addicted to pornography and addicted to their sexual drive. And the cost is that the love of their heart will not be fulfilled.”
“The great promise of contraception was that it would reduce abortions,” Kuby said. However, the opposite happened as contraception “completely overturns the attitude to the child.”
“The child is a gift from the Lord. It’s a gift all through the Old Testament… Life is a gift. We have not made life. Life is a gift from God. And a child is a gift from God. We destroy this attitude that a child is a gift; [instead] we say it’s a product of mine,” she continued.

Kuby traced the destruction of traditional sexual morality back to the French Revolution at the end of the 18th century.

“The happy nun contradicts the deterministic ethics of sexual identity. Her life embodies the fact that our sexuality is not a determined lump of the drives we happen to feel at any given moment, nor a mystical identity we find one day, but the question of what we do with our drives as they present themselves. In the life of a celibate, sexuality is fully revealed as a project we are responsible for, rather than a fixed identity we mutely affirm and acknowledge (and later panic as our drives shift, our desires change, and identity changes with it).
The celibate does not deny a sphere of sexuality nor belittle its beauty and importance. The celibate denies that this sphere exists outside of our freedom.”
