CARTOON CLUB #09 FOLLOW-UP

Another personal favorite for this week, and locked in a three-way tie for my favorite Tom and Jerry cartoon!

This short is maybe the pinnacle of what I'd consider "peak" T&J to be. Incredible music score, creative subversion of their dynamic (funneling their rivalry through a golf game instead of a standard predator vs prey chase), incredibly limber and appealing animation, amazing character acting full of specificity and clear emotion, great gags and great directing. And not one, but two Tom screams! It's the whole package

Such is true for a great number of T&J shorts, especially during this era, but the energy is so high and infectious all the way through. The beginning scenes of Tom golfing undisturbed by Jerry's presence are as invigorating and energetic as when Jerry is involved. Everything is balls to the wall all the way through, but there are also a lot of enjoyable "mundane" gags that still receive the same care and grip as the high energy sequences and gags. Tom laboriously going through the motions with his mental math, only for Jerry to scold him for cheating his score and Tom begrudgingly correcting himself comes to mind

Irv Spence's animation in this one, as tends to be the case of this era, is such a standout. He animates the very first cut of the short, that looooong amazing background pan that finally settles on an incredibly manic Tom trying to hit the ball over and over again--Spence got that rubbery, raw mania down PAT and all of his scenes are just so sprightly and lithe and fun to look at. Ditto with all of the other animators, I can't think of a single weak spot in this short's art direction. I also think it has one of the greatest and most electrifying soundtracks of any Tom and Jerry cartoon, which is NOT something I say lightly considering Scott Bradley's incomprehensible musical prowess. This is a short I frequently listen to in the background just for the music

This is another short I've taken for granted as a favorite and gotten complacent with. What's there to say about it? It's one of my favorite T&Js and is one I'd absolutely consider one of the best of the series, DUH, doesn't everybody think that? Hard to find the words because its appeal and success just feels so "obvious" to me. Easy to take such greatness for granted. But I don't think there could ever be a more entertaining and wild short about what is often considered one of the most "boring" sports around. And a fun fact, on the topic of Irv Spence--there's a degree of autobiography regarding this short's premise! From Irv Spence's cartoon diary, 1944:
