April 2, 2016......AUDITIONS HAVE ARRIVED!!!
When I woke up that morning I was super excited but at the same time super nervous. I had packed my audition bag the night before and pre-curled my wig.
I got there super early. So early they weren’t letting anyone in yet. So I just sat in the car until it was time. Then sat in the lobby until it was time to go up.
When it was finally time for registration, we rode the elevators upstairs to he club level of the stadium to register. I had already turned in my application and head shot ahead of time. But I still handed in a glossy 8x10 copy of my collage just in-case. They gave me my number (181) and I went to sit with the other ladies from my Sideline Prep group.
We waited for a while before we started the first round of auditions. The first round was intro speech and freestyle. It was 6 of us in a group. Waiting outside of the door to the dance room was sooooo nerve wracking. I was prepared to dance for 1 min but it wasn’t even that long, it was super short. After my group went, we sat around waiting again for everyone to finish and for them to call our numbers for who was moving on to the second round.
After what felt like FOREVER, the directors came up and called the numbers for who would make it to the next round. THEY CALLED MY NUMBER!!!!! I already knew my number was going to be called. I attended all 10 prep classes so I got an automatic pass to the next round. But it was still nerve wracking...
After the 1st round we got to eat a little. I went to subway the day before and got a sandwich. And we had time to touch up our makeup.
For the 2nd round, we went down to the dance room and learned choreography. The dance was easy and I was able to pick it up. I was just struggling with the technique a little (double pirouette). But I practiced up until it was time to hit the stage.
The 2nd round was a little different than the 1st round in terms of performing. For the 1st round we were in the dance room. For the 2nd round we had to perform on stage in front of season ticket holders, box owners, and fans. When we first got on stage we did the dance. After the dance we introduced ourselves and then one of the fans got to ask us an interview question. I felt like I did good on the interview question. But I fell out of my double :( so I wasn’t feeling too good about that. After we finished on stage, we went to wait around AGAIN.
When it was time for numbers to be called we were told to pack up all of our things to go back downstairs to the lobby where they would reveal the numbers. That elevator ride downstairs wasn’t nerve wracking at all. I had a strange sense of calm. When we got downstairs, there was a dry erase board with our numbers on it waiting to be flipped over. Once everyone got downstairs, they told us that if our numbers were on the board then we would get to come back tomorrow (that’s when the vets would arrive). If our numbers weren’t on the board then we could go home. The board was flipped over and my number wasn’t there :(
To be honest I wasn’t really expecting to make the team my first time auditioning. Actually no one really makes Redskins the first go round. It’s extremely rare. It took most of the girls 3-7 times to finally make the team.
Even though I was done, auditions weren’t over for the ones who made it past the second round. Those girls had to endure finals week and the final audition show. I still went to finals to cheer on my girl Azusa. She traveled all the way from Japan to chase her dreams and she made the team on her first try! She’s a bomb dancer and very humble. Plus going to finals to watch the girls make the team was inspirational. Gave me something to look forward to and to work harder for next year.
The most important thing is that I CHASED MY DREAMS. I didn't make it, but I was so proud of myself for even having the courage to try in the first place and for making it as far as I did. I worked super hard and learned so much about myself over those months it took to prepare. So I'm extremely grateful for the experience and for the new friends that I made. Always remember that a no is NOT a never. So this no isn't the end of the road for me...it's only the beginning ^_^
