Advice: don't get caught up by elitist BS with regard to product design and free hand sketching. If you are a student and your struggling to sketch then use ellipse tools and rulers to aid your perspective drawing.If it helps then why not. Free hand is a skill and it takes time to aquire so do not neglect it. Tools are exactly that, they help you just like CAD does, it's not cheating, it's just another tool!

In my opinion this is a very good example of product design, it is a simple solution to a problem. I have seen first had the amount of times friends and family members have forgotten inhalers or couldn't find them. and this product solves the issue. Their Tumblr account contacted me asking me to take a look and maybe share this, and i wouldn't be doing that if i did not think it was a great idea.

Hi! I was thinking about studying product design and the school I want to apply to doesn't say almost anything about the portfolio on their website. Like what should be in that portfolio? Photos of things I designed or just sketches? What was your portfolio like? I do illustrations and drawings mainly but I think those would be good for fine art major not product design. Sorry for so many questions but I have no one to ask, I don't know anyone in this major :-)

Hi, its great that you are considering studying product design. I am not really qualified to answer that question, i would suggest finding out the contact details of the course leader or head lecturer and ask them what you just asked me, that said here is the best advice i can think to give you; Show a range of your work and don’t limit yourself, you don’t want to hand in something that is just 15-20 pages of toasters in three point perspective rendered in markers, that’s good but show your diversity and present a range of ideas or drawings or illustrations (the exception would be if your doing a specific course like automotive design, then they would probably want to see content related to that). I would include photos and sketches but don’t over think it, it needs to be a creative portfolio of what you are about and what you can do, your not a design student yet so i don’t think they will be expecting a super product design style portfolio, that’s the stuff they will teach you. Going back to my earlier point, i would get contact details and ask what they would like to see because my advice may be way off what their looking for, i don’t know what the exact course is and I’m still only a student myself. sorry for the giant answer but i wanted to give you the best possible advice, i hope this helps.

Advice to Fellow Students: My final piece of advice, for now, is to keep your work. Date your sketches and keep them in a folder or keep a sketch book or a pen drive with your work on it. this serves two purposes:

It allows you to look back, compare your work and visually see your progress. For me this blog is my gauge, i look back to my earlier sketches often and even at work before i stated this blog and i can see side by side the improvements i have made.

It gives you lots of fuel for your portfolio or to even start a project or a blog, it gives you content for many different outlets.
