Hi all! My name is Professor Julia Lemon (she/her). I'm a Pokemon researcher working at Fallarbor Labs, and my specialty is on the studies of artificial Pokemon, including regenerated fossils. My current research projects include reversing the damage to Porygon done by the Dubious Disc, improving quality of life of Galar's hybrid fossils, studying the many variations of Voltorb, and studying the advanced technology of Area Zero's Pokemon. My graduate dissertation was on improvements to fossil regeneration for quality of life, health, and safety of revived Pokemon.

I am always open to questions about myself and my research. I want to educate people on the wonderful world of artificial Pokemon, they really are very special!

I study artificial Pokemon, but did you know there are also artificial moves?

Pokemon naturally learn moves as they gain experience. They can also inherit moves from their parents, or even gain moves during the process of evolution. However, some moves can only be learned by Pokemon with human assistance. These "artificial" moves are often considered in three distinct categories, based on the origin of the move.

Culturally taught moves are moves that are passed down in certain cultures or as part of cultural traditions. Draco Meteor is a very famous example of this. The move has been passed down through generations of Dragon Tamers and the Draconid people. The "ultimate moves" (Frenzy Plant, Blast Burn, and Hydro Cannon), were originally taught by the people of the Sevii islands. Moves that can only be learned by Legendary or Mythical Pokemon, such as Relic Song, are often passed down through generations of families.

Competitively taught moves are moves specifically taught by experts for competitive battling. Moves like Scorching Sands are taught in dojos on the Isle of Armor by masters. In Kanto, expert trainers of Eevee and Pikachu have a few moves they teach as well.

Finally, there are machine taught moves. These are moves engineered for use as Technical Machines, or TMs. Most recently are the TMs engineered at Unova's Blueberry Academy. These include moves like Alluring Voice and Upper Hand. These are similar to competitively taught moves, in that they are often created for the sole purpose of competitive battle. However, they differ in the techniques by which they are taught.

Artificially constructed moves are nothing new. Many cultures have been teaching Pokemon moves that are not naturally learned for generations. However, advancements in TM technology have made engineering moves a much more common practice. Modern artificial moves are more about effectiveness in competition. However, there are still many people and places that teach moves as a part of their heritage. Some techniques and traditions for teaching moves are even considered intangible cultural heritage. While the techniques we use may differ, the goal is almost always the same; to solidify the bond between people and Pokemon.

Greetings, Professor Lemon.

As a newcomer to both the Hoenn Region and the Pokémon Professor field, I have spent some time reading through the research of the local scholars and I have found your work quite interesting.

Reading through your papers on the Galarian fossils was fascinating and enlightening. I personally specialize in the research of Pokémon hybridization, although I mostly focus on crossbreeding and symbiotic relationship. I was aware Chimerization between extant Pokémon was possible through my experiences working on project [Redacted], but I never knew it was possible to create Chimeras from fossil Pokémon (Fossils were unfortunately not really that touched upon in the scientific community back in Alola).

I’m eager to learn more about these engineered creatures, and thought I will travel to Galar to study them up close and consult Dr. Liss, it would be delightful if you could share some more of your knowledge of these Pokémon.

Hello. Please do not contact Cara Liss about the hybridized fossils. She is incredibly careless and cruel; the very existence of these Pokemon begets their suffering. She has no regard for their safety, care, and creation. These Pokemon should not even exist. They suffer from a range of extreme physical issues. Spinal cord damage, breathing problems, dietary complications, digestion issues, difficulty regulating body temperature, joint stress and pains.... the list goes on.

There are many reputable scholars who have studied these Pokemon and the consequences of their creation. That is primarily my area of research in regards to these Pokemon. There are also many scholars who research the currently incomplete fossils (Draco, Arcto, Vish, and Zolt) that make up the hybridized fossils. Please consider contacting someone who has published studies on the topic, and who has not created these poor Pokemon.

Hello. Ancient artificial Pokemon are a really interesting area of study. We have been creating Pokemon for a very long time! What is really amazing, however, is that these Pokemon still exist in numbers. The cultures and technologies once used to create Pokemon such as Baltoy and Golett have long since passed. However, populations of Baltoy and Golett still thrive in the wild! Its an amazing insight into how the Pokemon we create artificially now may become part of the ecosystem in the future. Who knows, maybe Mewtwo will be much more common?

This is definitely true. Mineralistic Pokemon have a much easier time adapting due to the lack of competing food sources and natural predators in most areas. Fossil Pokemon alone can have devestating environmental impacts in the wrong ecosystem. Carelessly releasing these Pokemon into the wild is not a good practice!

Though in some cases, Fossil Pokemon have become a part of modern ecosystems. The Crown Tundra in Galar, for example, has a self-sustaining (though closely monitored) population of Amaura and Aurorus. Pokemon are remarkably adaptive, the process of Evolution alone is evidence of this!

I will admit, ignoring all ethical and environmental issues, a small part of me would love to see Porygon running freely in the wild. Imagine seeing them swimming in a lake as you walk by, that would be precious! I would never carelessly release Porygon like that, but I do have my little fantasies.

Would love to hear about the research you're doing on the Dubious Disk. I've done some extensive research on Porygons myself since I've needed to make extra accommodations for my Pories (if you find the post I made on how I found them it explains why), so I'm always interested in this stuff.

Hello. Wonderful to meet you as well! It is always nice to see people as enthusiastic about Porygon's as I am, they are such amazing Pokemon.

My research has been primarily in reversing and mitigating the effects of the Dubious Disc. The Dubious Disc comes with many unwanted and harmful side effects for Porygon-Z, and I want to find a safe way to remove these effects. General confusion, erratic and sometimes painful movements, wandering limbs, among other symptoms are all far too common in Porygon-Z. Because of Porygon-Z's corrupted code, it becomes very difficult and risky to modify the code with even simple scripts. Hopefully, there is a way to help Porygon-Z, but it is a very long process.

I know many Porygon-Zs tend to have a variety of adverse reactions to the Dubious Disc code.

Do you think the confusion may come from what the program was for? The Dubious Disc program was supposed to give Porygon2 the ability to travel to and adapt to alien dimensions, which would mean a drastic jump in cognitive processing and adaptability, among other things. It'd be like going from a Windows 98 computer straight to a modern-day Arch Linux build: a whole new operating system that is WAY more advanced than the previous one.

Naturally, that'd confuse anyone. Especially if the operating system is basically their brain.

Yes, I think part of it is the ambition of the project requiring such a significant jump in software capabilities. Actually, a lot of the blame goes towards the lead programmer's incompetence, but I do not think that is a fair assessment. Should the lead programmer have been more careful? Of course, they are not free from blame. But the issues leading up to the creation of Porygon-Z run deeper.

A lack of proper safety measures for the Porygon, and a lack of tools for safe testing meant the entire project put the Porygon at risk. The project was ambitious, and could theoretically have worked. With such a promising piece of research on their hands, it was hard to step back and say that this was not the right time to do this, and there were not tools in place to create the now Dubious Disc safely. In an academic culture of publish or perish, and with a competitive culture where you are racing other researchers for results, safety was put to the wayside. The situation and its impacts are devastating, and to put it down to incompetence ignores larger issues in research culture and ethics as a whole.

On a technical level, a lot of it did come down to what you said. It was far too much of an upgrade from Porygon2 to Porygon-Z to work. To work, it almost needed intermediate steps. A Porygon3, or 4, or 5, before jumping to the final upgrade. Splitting the program as well would have been ideal. The Dubious Disc is enormous in terms of data. By uploading the Dubious Disc as one upgrade, any and all problems that would arise from the update do, without the ability to properly stop it and assess the individual aspects of the disc.
