I haven't seen it (I only saw until movie 4), but in On Stranger Tides, did it retcon the way Jack became a pirate? Because I heard it has a young Jack Sparrow aboard the Wicked Wench yet already a pirate, when he only became a pirate after it became the Pearl.

Unless, since the villain was a Spanish navy sailor, Jack was a legitimate privateer to the British but seen as a pirate by the Spanish and Beckett only later made him a pirate for both.

I accidentally skipped that one so IDK.

I actually kind of have an answer for this, and it lies in the Jack Sparrow book series from 2006, showing a teenage Jack Sparrow, as a pirate. I don’t remember much of them since it’s been so long since I read them, but sometime between those books and The Price of Freedom, he turns to a legitimate career as a merchant. That book is the one where he’s given the Wicked Wench, and eventually turns back to piracy.

I don’t recall OST having a scene with young Jack Sparrow, so I think OP may be thinking of Dead Men Tell No Tales, but either way, I don’t believe it mentioned the Wicked Wench by name, so it is entirely possible that the scene in question features a different ship that Jack sailed on during his early days.

honestly yor forger is the best example of girlfail ever. She’s a highly trained assassin. She’s immune to poison. She knows how to throw hand. She’s an amazing mother. She took care of her brother after being orphaned because she grew up during a war.

WRONG unfortunately this is when most adolescents are bullied or isolated based on their peers', parents', and teachers' phobias and expectations. The anxious generation is anxious guess what not because of phones but because it is socially acceptable to say one is anxious as opposed to previous generations in which it was seen as a character failing. No, but this is actually (sort of) canon.

See, part of the conceit of the PotC trilogy is that all myths are true. Nearly every supernatural element in the franchise has a root in some real world mythology or pirate lore, although some of them are mashed together.

Another thing is that they take place at the end of the Golden Age of Piracy, and the more the map gets filled in, and the more the Royal Navy takes power, there less room there is for the mystical and supernatural in the world. This is explicitly called out in At World's End with the death of the kraken:

Barbossa: The world used to be a bigger place. Jack: The world's still the same. There's just... less in it.

The only way to access the world of the supernatural is through the supernatural itself. You can only get to the Isla de Muerta with Jack's compass that points to whatever you desire, or if you already know where its is. You need Tia Dalma's map to find the edge of the world. To access the supernatural, you need to already be immersed in it.

The pirates world isn't flat, it's round - but because the edge of the world exists in myth, it therefore exists in reality. The pirates are able to find it through supernatural means, but if, say, someone like Norrington just sailed in the same general direction, he wouldn't end up in the same place.

Between that, and Barbossa implied to mutiny because he was too merciful and it's no wonder Jack is so committed to being a pirate, and acting like a scoundrel! Doing the right thing has consistently condemned him throughout his life! And yet, when push comes to shove, he can never fully commit to being a selfish scoundrel, even when he wants to...

you can tell it's not just an act though. he is self-aware about many of his own flaws (EX: "i deserved that") and views himself quite negatively because of them, but he also firmly insists that good Pirates exist. and how would he know that?

he strikes me as basically doing Zuko's whole thing just more deliberately (probably because he's an adult and Zuko is a teenager).

Will, noticing what Jack actually did, accuses him of planning this since he learned his name, which Jack confirmed. In other words, Jack was planning from the start to fake giving over Will so they were in a position for Will to save Elizabeth and Jack to kill Barbossa.

rewatched the entire PoTC trilogy on an international flight and I can't believe I forgot how funny it is.

Barbossa is the most exasperated character in any scene he's in, unless he's winning. then he's the smuggest son of a bitch on screen (he literally returns from the dead smugly eating an apple). but majority of the time, he's 'why am I the only adult here'. man rolls his eyes so much I half-expected him to turn straight to the camera.

when Will asks Elizabeth to marry him while they are fighting Davy Jones' crew, stuck in a maelstrom, and trapped in the final battle, the first word out of her mouth is "Barbossa!". she then continues by asking Barbossa to marry them, but for a split second Will's face goes like 'Barbossa? Barbossa?? I didn't even know he was on the map of this convoluted love quadrangle!'

when they're in Singapore and Sao Feng threatens the spy he found and Will, Elizabeth, and Barbossa all look at each other to confirm that none of them have snuck in a spy they forgot to tell the others about, before shrugging and telling Sao Feng to go ahead and kill him.

Barbossa's eyes just getting wide and wider the more weapons Elizabeth pulls out of her clothes. c'mon man, let a woman have her toys!

rewatching really gives you the full picture of how many people are scheming at any given time and how each person's schemes intersect with the others, even if they're nominally on the same side. everyone also gets So Upset when their scheme is foiled, accidentally or intentionally, by someone else's scheme, as though they themselves aren't scheming at that very moment.

Barbossa's iron balls. I'm sorry, this is the funniest dick joke in the trilogy that defines how many dick jokes Disney can stick in a movie before it stops being PG-13. Jack's reaction really says it all.

rereading this list I see it's quite heavily tilted in favor of Barbossa which I now realize is because I empathize with Barbossa way more than I did as a kid. I too am frustrated to be surrounded by idiots while I'm the only adult around. man just wants to eat his apple in peace goddammit. so he did a little mutiny and maybe some more murder and mayhem and also maybe unleashed a pagan god upon the world. the guy really likes his apples, is that a crime?!?

The scene where Will asks Elizabeth is even better. Will specifically words his proposal with "I've made my choice, what's yours?" So Elizabeth shouting "Barbossa!" does sound like she's choosing him, explaining Will's confusion.

I do love in the first one how Jack's heroic music is playing at full strength even when he's revealed to be a in dingy, and again when it's revealed he's now atop a sinking mast.

And how Norrington spends almost every interaction with or about Jack demeaning him, only for Jack to completely humiliate him by stealing the fastest ship in the fleet. While thanking him for preparing it for them. And his subordinate even has the gall to praise Jack right next to him!

(Also when they fake steal the Dauntless, Jack's trying to look professional while Will tries to look cool. And fails.)

One of the things that always jumped out to me about this reveal is that it implies that Metro Man was also the very first person to recognize that MegaMind wasn’t really evil. He knew his nemesis wouldn’t actually hurt anyone if he won, he knew that this universally reviled pariah never really had any more choice than he did.

The rest of Metro City treats MegaMind like a real, sincere, serious threat once he’s unopposed, and it takes them a while to learn otherwise. But Metro Man? He’s not surprised to see him and Roxanne working together, he doesn’t act like there’s any kind of threat beyond his cover being blown. He wastes no time in coming clean once the cat’s out of the bag. He’s been working with this guy all his life. Besides his own mental health, I get the impression that he also recognized that this would be good for MegaMind too.

I just really love how in a superhero pastiche that asks “Is the villain really so bad, and the hero really so good?” the answer is “no, but that’s okay”. It’s okay that Metro Man isn’t a paragon. It’s okay that he has to take care of himself. It’s okay for him to step down and live his own life. It wouldn’t be okay for him to leave people in danger, but it’s pretty clear he knew he wasn’t doing that.

And it carries to the end. MegaMind becomes the city’s new protector, but it’s clear that he’s still got some issues to work through, and he’s getting help working through them. He’s got a support network, he’s willing to put in the effort, but he’s not the shining paragon Metro Man was believed to be. And he doesn’t NEED to be that paragon. He’s still good. He’s still protecting people. And he’s not alone in it.

God, there’s just so many shitty “Superheroes would have character flaws too, and that’s why they’d actually suck” deconstructions floating around, it’s nice to see a story that acknowledges that no one can live up to that kind of role, but that’s okay!
