Secret of Euphemism
Do you know what euphemisms are? They are word-focus, word that save, word-cunning. Euphemism is a softer expression used instead of one that seems too harsh or straightforward. As for example some people when talk about dead, instead using the word itself use “he passed away” or “went to a better world”.
Euphemisms are widely used in speech and are extremely useful in communication. They allow, without offending anyone, to say exactly what we want. However, if used improperly, euphemisms can be not only ridiculous, but can also lead to awkward situations. For example, in selling instead of the word “cost” is usually used the therm “attachments”. Everyone can be guilty of the fact that we, warning “I’ll drop by for a couple of minutes” often stay not only for ten minutes, but sometimes even for two hours!
Or “I need a time to think” often means “I DO NOT want to think about it” or even just “NO!”. If someone say that will consider your proposal, I recommend you, no matter what you’re talking about, ask some additional questions and find out for yourself what exactly made your interlocutor take a time-out for thinking, because behind the excusable “I need to think” there may be a harsh “no” that simply is not easy to pronounce.
“Send me a booklet, details, please, in writing” - expressions of this type are usually used by traders to soften the hide behind them “ I’m not interested in your proposal”.
Also is very common the use of “only”, “just” and “try” for mitigation of meaning, few examples of it: “Only 100£ per square meter” “Just put it there, okay?” “Just sign here” “Try to pick it up (the chair)”
And to finish expressions as “Believe me” and “trust me” repeatedly rescued even former US president GWB.
