If it’s safe to bank online, it’s time to take a serious look at voting online. We can't think of a more deserving group to test out online absentee voting than the men and women in our armed forces. Congratulations to Texas for their successful test run!
This weekend marks the 50th anniversary of the march on Selma that inspired the passage of the Voting Rights Act. In the Chicago Tribune today, member of our board Martin Luther King III laments:
"When President Lyndon B. Johnson signed into law the Voting Rights Act of 1965, my father, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., truly believed that the disenfranchised would be forever empowered. Sadly, his hopes were not realized."
MLK III recommends some our favorite remedies for our broken election system: Online voter registration, putting a photo on social security cards in states with voter ID laws, and, of course, weekend voting. Any other good suggestions? Let us know!
