Jensen Ackles directed this scene. Jensen Ackles made sure to include a shot of Dean and Cas together in The Roadhouse—which just so happens to be Dean’s heaven—while Becky talks about Chuck’s terrible ending which is in fact the actual ending of the show.

He knows what Becky—and we—want for Dean and Cas. He couldn’t give it to us, but he at least can signal what we now know he’d prefer too. Subtly subversive and I appreciate it.

dean winchester has never in his life gotten the freedom and choice and time to think about what he truly wants and what makes him happy. his entire life has been protecting sam, saving people, hunting things, and stopping apocalypses. he has never had the opportunity, the breathing room, to truly develop his own independent identity outside of big brother/hunter.

and the writers saw that and decided to end his life rather than allow him to discover his own path. dean winchester deserved better and no i will not shut up about this ever.
