The wall of howling gale encircled the faerie the moment she made her presence known. It wasn’t like Faust was prepared, or even that he made the deliberate choice to create an elemental shield between himself and the faerie, but when someone points a weapon at you, it’s often best to make a choice first and consider any consequences as they arise. Had this been anywhere else except a high risk zone, he would have tried diplomacy, but for right now, he would escape. Even in self defence, he refused to cause harm unless there was little else he could do to save himself.
He’d come to these ruins to search for any spell components or lost tomes he could study. Much like Faust himself, the pursuit of knowledge was sleepless. Although he would have loved more time to stay and perhaps attempt a few divination rituals, it was apparently not to be, as some being seemed to decide his presence unwelcome, for one reason or another. Bringing up the wind barrier was easy enough, and it was a powerful enough distraction, though it would dissipate the moment Faust left a certain radius or after a mere minute, whichever came first. The technomancer had no intention to stay for that minute, and started briskly running towards back towards the labyrinth of caves and tunnels that lead back to the surface.
He did send a telepathic message to the faerie, however. It would have been rude to leave her with the impression he was a thief or a vandal. “Forgive me for doing that, it was purely an instinctive response. However, I was unsure of your intentions towards me. Perhaps it would be best for us to forget this incident occurred.” he thought to her politely, hoping that she wouldn’t pursue him once the barrier faded… Which it did the moment he reached the mouth of the nearest tunnel, still within sight of the faerie.
The cage was loud, but Marrow had been trained never to drop her weapon. She grimaced with the howling in her ears, knees buckling at the sheer force of the magic. Clearly, this was not a fairy. Could it be one of the Fae, awakened from their long slumber by the unrest of the land? No, impossible. A Fae would never leave a message. There would only be death.
Her ears were left ringing, complaining loudly at the sudden upset. It left her dazed and off-balance. Still, she needed to find this mage, to determine whether he was a risk to the security of the nation. Marrow stumbled after him, one hand on a wall to guide her until her senses came close to normal.
Fairies weren’t able to communicate telepathicly. At least, not from her brood. But Marrow could shout. She was very good at that. The fairy put some of her magic into her voice and called out, as best she could, “Stop! Cease your running, in the name of the king!”
