Puck snuck into the house easily enough. The bed was just right for him- not too soft or too hard. The fairy slid under the covers, pulling them up and around him so that he could properly nest in the bed, then settled in to sleep.

The witch entered her home, relieved to be there. She had run her errands, and her arms were full of packages. She shut the door behind her when she heard a odd sound, so she stood still til she heard it again.

A snore. In her house. It was soft, but it was there. Very carefully, she slid her shoes off and tiptoed through the house, silent as a cat. After checking all the other rooms and finding nothing, she slid into her bedroom. Blinking to make sure she was seeing right, she bit her lip to keep from cooing aloud.

There was a little Fae in her bed, all deep red curls and feathers, so far as she could see. They were curled up in her blanket, up past their nose, their little eyes shut and they snored, again. This time she couldn’t stifle her cooing.

“ Hello there, Fair One. Somehow you found my bed, can you wake up?”

“ Adorable is very good.” Sophia replied with a smile, gently tweaking a curl. She couldn’t help herself, they were so cute. “ And I will tell you, I am not the best. Not even close. I am just a witch, that is all.”

“You’re the best witch I ever met.” He informed her, going back to his tower of silverware.”Are all witches like you?”

“English is hard.” He declared, adding a knife to his fork palace. “I dunno how old I am, though. How old am I? D’you know?”

“ English is hard,” Sophia agreed. “ And sometimes it’s hard to tell with faeries and witches. I don’t look two hundred and fifty years old, do I? I think I look about..thirty years old, perhaps?” She smiled at Puck, taking a good look at him. She was rapidly making space for him in her heart and in her life. “ You’re probably a lot older, but you look…about seven.” she decided.

“But for all we know, I could be seventy billion years old!” He grinned up at her. “I could be the oldest old person to ever old!”

“ Well.. you could.” Sophia said hesitantly. “ But somehow, I don’t think so. You have a King, right? I bet he’s a lot older than you. You know the amazing thing is? You could live to be seventy billion years old!”

He gasped. “Then I’d be really really old! Old as the king, maybe.” The fairy stood and leaned against Sophia’s legs. “If I get old, will I get big like you?”

“Y’know? I’m not sure.” Sophia answered honestly, petting Puck’s curls. “ I know some Fae get tall and some stay short, but whether you get bigger or not, I think you will adorable either way.”

“And adorable is good?” He asked, looking up at Sophia with wide eyes. “I wanna be the best. Like you!”

“You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.” - for Ace or Sophia. Let's do a thing!

Oberon paused mid-sentence, blinking at the witch before him. The fairy shook his head after a moment and exhaled. “Okay, darling, why don’t you define the truth for me?”

When her feet touched the ground, Sophia felt a bit better. Resting sounded wonderful about now, and she nodded. “ That sounds good. After a bit of rest I should be ready for more dancing.” she promised.

“I hope so.” He led her to a chair and handed her a goblet of wine. Another fairy approached with more berries, another with cheeses, and another with pastries and assorted sweetmeats.

“ Me too. The music..and everything. It’s so wonderful.” Sophia gratefully took a seat and the goblet of wine, taking a deep drink. She hadn’t realized how thirsty she was, and as she drank, her stomach grumbled.

Sophia knew that fairy foods could be dangerous, but she also knew that if she didn’t eat too much she would be alright. So she contented herself with more berries and some cheese, convincing herself that as long as it was natural foods, she would recover from eating them easier. But it didn’t stop her from eating a plateful of the sweet-tart berries and the cheese in short order.

After eating, she felt completely revived, as if she had never been tired to start with. She couldn’t even remember feeling tired. “ Ready to dance again, Your Highness?” she asked him playfully as she stood up.

“Of course!” He laughed and stood, offering her his hand. “We can dance all night, if that is your desire.” He took her into his arms, starting to lead her across the field in a waltz.

" Where are we? “

“Oh, this?” Jer stepped away from him, letting him take in the shopping area and let the fairy recover from Apparating. “Carkitt Market. Offshoot of Diagon Alley. I need to pick up some things, from… my old place.” He grinned sheepishly. “You don’t mind, do you?”

“I...I want you to take care of my heir until this all blows over. If I lose, then... you might have to keep him. But there is always the possibility that I’ll be able to take him back. He’s... very young. And will stay that way for some time. You needn’t worry about teaching him anything specific that you wouldn’t already know. But... I trust you to raise my child.”

“Puck, are you in need of attention?”

Puck clutched at Subby’s hand, eyes wide. “There are cherry blossoms in the garden! We can go look at them- and there’s shaved ice and all of that! You could hold me in your lap and feed me.” He smiled brightly, eyes glowing.

“That does sound far better.” He caved easily, willing to indulge his pet. “Lead and I will follow. The sooner I have you in my lap, the better.” The idea of laying Puck out in the sun, beneath the cherry trees, was motivating.

The fairy let out a delighted laugh and danced towards the door. “Oh, it’s going to be marvelous, milord. Absolutely wonderful! The trees are gorgeous today and I’m certain that this is the best way to spend your day.”

“A corner. And a pint.” Oberon reached into his pocket, pulling out a few Galleons that glimmered in the light. “I’ll pay. No issue.” They were real, of course. Not his, but real.

The fairy slid into a corner booth and did a few complicated movements with one hand, casting a spell that made them seem just a little less important. With his other hand, he drew out another cigarette that lit itself when he placed it between his lips.

Jer nodded and took the coins when offered them, bringing them up to the bar. He saw Belshaw, a familiar face, and waved him down, talking to him for a few minutes before he came back with two pints of ale. “I have been told in the past, my money’s no good here,” he admitted sheepishly as he sat down next to Oberon and passed him one along with the Galleons.

Gently, he touched Oberon’s arm. “Are you okay? What’s going on?”

The fairy left the coins on the table and took a deep drink of his ale. He set it back on the table, but kept both hands curled around the cold glass. “I will survive this, I promise.” He paused, thinking about the correct phrasing. “Have I told you about the… the current state of Faerie?”

Jerome reflected on the question a moment, before shaking his head. “Not for some time, no,” he responded, taking a sip of his own drink. “Can you tell me what’s going on?”

“I can.” He contemplated his drink for a moment. “There is a war. A civil war. It appears that I may be on the losing end.” Oberon frowned a bit and scooted a tiny bit closer to Jerome. “Would you mind doing me a favor?”
