Shit Brides Say...this is entirely too accurate. And why does that man look so good in a wedding dress?
STRESS
How do you do it? I really didn't think that planning a wedding was going to be all that stressful. I figured all you had to do was pick your venue, photographer, dress, etc. and the rest would just fall together. NO. Now that we've hit the one year mark, all of the sudden I feel like there are a million things to do. It's a little overwhelming, and when I feel overwhelmed, I have a tendency to just ignore it and not do anything. Clearly, that strategy isn't going to work in this case.
The next year is going to be very busy for me as I complete a pharmacy residency (why did I think this was a good idea again?), which is stressful enough on its own. Adding in the stress of planning a wedding is a little bit too much. All of that said, there are a few things that I like to do to keep the stress level down.
Taking time for myself. I've been trying to set aside time each day to work out. Even if this just means walking for 30 minutes, it's MY time. Committing this small amount of time each day to physical activity gives me more energy and improves my focus throughout the rest of the day.
Making lists. Writing down what I need to get done that day (and being realistic with myself) helps to make things more manageable. Like I mentioned in a previous post, I categorized all of my major wedding to-do's into monthly sections. There are still smaller things that need to be done each week, like sending emails to vendors and making minor decisions, but these go on my daily to-do list. I use an app on my iPhone called Teux Deux which lets you cross off items as they are completed, and uncompleted tasks are rolled over to the next day. It also synchronizes with an online account, so you can access it even if you can't use your phone. I love crossing items off of my list each day, progress feels good!
Getting rid of clutter. This really has nothing to do with wedding planning, but when I organize my living space, I feel more centered. I know that this definitely doesn't apply to everyone, but I'm very left-brained and this is what works for me. I try to spend 10-15 minutes each evening picking up around my apartment, and I never leave dirty dishes in the sink. Try it for a few days, you won't regret it!
WINE. Not kidding, sometimes knowing that I can enjoy a glass of wine once I get home is what gets me through the day. Whatever works, right?
So to all of you who are also wedding planning or have planned a wedding in the past, what did you do to beat stress?
Progress
My sisters and mom visited me this weekend; we had a great time and made a lot of wedding planning progress! Most importantly, we were able to organize a lot of my thoughts, and get a better idea of what needs to be done over the next year. I categorized my master to-do list, and separated it by month, which made the whole thing seem a little less overwhelming. We also visited a bridal salon where I was able to try on a few dresses. I narrowed down the choices to one that I really love, but I would still like to continue looking around. While looking at my photographer's website, I came across some bridal shots that he did of his wife (after their wedding), and discovered that she wore the dress was my first choice at the bridal salon. I actually never would have picked this dress out from looking at the pictures, but it is just beautiful in person. My photographer's wife is actually a friend of my sister's, and I am considering reaching out to her to see if she would be willing to sell or lease her dress to me. We are very similar shapes and heights, so I have a feeling that it would fit me well with little alterations. I would be thrilled to get a good deal on the dress, as it is currently a little above my budget. What are your thoughts on wearing a used dress?
The Wedding Party
Typically, selecting the wedding party is one of the first things the bride and groom do after getting engaged. Well we're stuck. We've been engaged for almost 3 months now, and we've yet to finalize the wedding party. The main source of the problem is that B has a close group of friends from middle school/high school that he lived with all throughout college, but he also has the group of guys that he's lived with the 3 years since graduating college. Don't forget both his and my brothers (I'm sure that's not correct grammer). I asked him to make a list of who he wants as groomsmen and the final count was 8. Now this isn't too outrageous, especially for a Southern wedding, but I only have 5 girls that I absolutely want to have as bridesmaids.
So what do we do? I've definitely been to weddings that had an uneven number of maids and men, but I would prefer that we were even (I like symmetry, ok?). So should I plan on asking 3 more girls, who I definitely consider good friends, but not necessarily BEST friends? Or should I try to convince B to use 3 of his guys as ushers? I think he is pretty set on including all of these guys in some way.

Here goes nothing...
Despite my failure at the whole blog thing in the past, I'm giving it another go. My main issue in the past was that I felt like I didn't have anything to post about. I mean, who really wants to hear about the life of a full-time studier? Well things are a little bit different now, because I'm planning a wedding! B and I got engaged about 2.5 months ago, and while the planning was slow at first, it feels like things are in full swing now. Here's where we are so far:
Wedding date: August 10, 2013
Ceremony and reception venue: The Hayloft, McLeansville NC
Photographer: Mark Potter
We've also set the date for our engagement pictures (Sept 7), and I will be going dress shopping with my mom and sisters next weekend.
If I had to describe the wedding we're planning in thee words I'd say Southern, rustic, and fun (hopefully)!
I wanted to go ahead and get the "big checks" out of the way pretty soon after we got engaged because I moved to Richmond, VA in June and I knew I wouldn't be back to NC for quite a while! Now that we have these done, I'm looking forward to sorting out all of the details. Stay tuned for more wedding plans!
