Is is possible that Akutagawa actually had a wealthy family?
Judging by the way he talks, the phrases he use, Akutagawa seems to be one of the best educated from the characters in BSD. Despite the fact he and his sister, Gin were living in the slums for a long time.
He has been working for thePort Mafia for years by now, but such vast knowledge couldn’t only be aquired only from the time there. He must have had some pre-knowledge probably from the time before the siblings lost their parents…
Also both Ryuu and Gin have sophisticated taste. Just look at their clothes!
Even their posture is usually graceful, screams almost royal.
Look at Gin, sitting like a real lady, ankles together, lightly placed to the side.
Also Ryu looks more like an edgy prince, than some random brat from the slums.
Mentioned on his character bio, Ryuu likes figs and tea, but hates mandarins and broad beans… There is no way he could afford to hate any kind of food in the slums and be able enjoy such luxurious things as tea or figs.
His outfit from those dark years(?) in complete poverty is represented differently in the anime and the manga:
He appears much younger in the anime, in a a ragged outfit he probably stole from somewhere, although in the manga he wears a much expensive looking shirt and almost looks like he had to run away from somewhere where he had much better living conditions.
What I believe truely happened:
Ryu and Gin had been living in a high society life, but due to a tragic event, they were forced to leave their homes and live in the slums from their early teens.
After the Port Maffia took them in, they returned to the lifestyle they had before their tragic downfall.
