I was just rambling earlier, which is why I left Private's height blank; he's 5'5'' but still growing, and trying to cram all that info in English made the text way too long. (I accidentally turned this into another AU lol). Private actually copied his hair from the others—he swiped Big Bro’s slicked-back style and Second Bro’s bangs, and he wakes up every morning just to fix it. Skipper and Private use a ton of hair gel; Kowalski combs his hair occasionally, while Rico's hair is just naturally feral like that. Even their facial features are fully customized and distinct from one another.

Skipper is deduced to be of German descent based on his appearance and native tongue, but he doesn't hold a German passport. Right now, Skipper and Private don't have real names; they only go by their call signs and aliases. Rico uses his first name, and Kowalski uses his last name. When Private walked away to follow Skipper, he literally threw his original ID into the trash. In this whole group, only Rico holds a legitimate, legal ID. Kowalski might be Polish, but who cares—all his fake IDs were forged by Skipper anyway. He’s the absolute anti-thesis of an academic writer; he hates writing papers but lives for hands-on experiments. When he babbles on endlessly, it’s not because he wants others to grasp the knowledge he understands (in fact, he has zero interest in sharing his knowledge). He never went to school. His journey went something like this: learned some fascinating stuff from people who actually went to school → wanted to go to school → found out he had no access to education → self-taught → chaotic learning → learned too well → "Wait, I don't even need school at all." Yet, deep down, there's still a hidden 1% of regret.

In this crew, only Kowalski and Private are literate (in English). Kowalski has a dyslexia-like condition where looking at too many words gives him a massive headache, unless it's his own handwriting. Private knows basic vocabulary. Skipper can only read German and the bare minimum of survival English. So, whenever reading becomes absolutely unavoidable, Private is the one who has to do all the heavy lifting.

Something I hadn't grappled much with before, but now am thinking about in my second Shadows watch, is how important Vicki's attachment to and relationship with Josette's ghost is to both her character, and her narrative weight on the show - and how those things are a casualty of Barnabas emerging from the family crypt. By moving into the Old House, Barnabas literally replaces Josette as the spirit of that House and the most important supernatural power there! It was Josette who appeared to Vicki before her anticipated death, telling her "Don't be afraid,", it was Josette's voice repeating Bill's posthumous charge against Matthew (a life for a life), and it is Josette who will be David and Vicki's greatest champion against Laura in the Phoenix arc. I'm not sure where I'm going with this, but I'm appending it to my usual list of "ways Barnabas's arrival did Vicki's character dirty": making Vicki's connection to the Collins's ancestral past irrelevant.

Sometimes Roger goes to Widow's Hill.

He doesn't like to be noticed, when he goes. But he goes, whenever he can, probably more frequently than he should. He'd have gone to Eagle Hill to pay his respects, if she'd had a stone, but there was nothing.

He has checked. Repeatedly. It's worth checking; things in the local cemeteries sometimes... move. Or appear out of nowhere. It's much the same in the registers of death and burial. She had died, but her remains had been washed out to sea. And with her husband hanged for murder shortly after, there had been no one left in 1797 to pay for so much as a memorial marker for Victoria Winters.

The past is constantly in flux, or so Professor Stokes says. There is always a chance that something might have altered, or updated, or otherwise changed. Something might have damaged the time-band. Such things, Stokes assures him, could take days or weeks or even years to affect the present. It depended entirely on how much damage, how great a wound had been inflicted.

So Roger checks. And when he finds nothing has changed, as it never does, he goes to Widow's Hill, where the wound is his own, unhealing and unalterable.
