Jay pressed his lips to a thin line, looking down at the pup then at Charlie. “I don’t think you do, as long as we end up training her properly,” he said with a shrug, “I guess she can sleep on your couch sometimes, or on your bed once you feel she’s ready.”

She looked a little relieved, fluffing the pup’s coat almost affectionately. “Good. And you’ll come and help me train her?”

“Of course!” he exclaimed rather excitedly. Jay had always wanted his own dog to care for, but the apartment he lived in currently didn’t allow pets, and his family couldn’t afford to keep one back then. Getting a chance to care for the pup with his friend sounded like a good way to spend the day. “Come on, let’s go,” he said, kneeling back down to the puppy’s level.

She let out a laugh at his excitement, smiling as Ginger barked and jumped up; resting her front paws against him as she licked his face. “She really likes you~” She said softly, placing a hand lightly on his shoulder before passing him the lead.

He let out a happy laugh at the show of affection, taking the leash and hooking it up onto the dog’s collar. He picked her up in his arms and headed toward the door, motioning for Charlie to follow him. As soon as they got outside, Jay set the puppy down and held on to the leash, setting a comfortable distance between him and the small creature.

Ginger snuggled into his arms, and Charlie watched them with a smile, locking the door behind them.

Yapping happily as she was set down, Ginger pulled forward as much as she could, nose to the ground as she explored every interesting smell.

Clearly, Charlie hasn’t been around too many friendly dogs. “I think it just means she likes you,” he said, kneeling down to the dog’s level to get a closer look. “Most dogs do that, just follow their owner around, I guess they’re kinda trying to familiarize themselves with you and their new home.”

He pet the beagle gently on the back, “And I don’t know what you mean by creepy, this is frickin’ adorable.” He smiled down at the dog, “Have you given her a name?”

The beagle looked up at him happily when he started to stroke her, tail wagging.

“I think I’ll just stick with Ginger, it’s what she was called by her previous owners.” She looked down at the beagle again, hesitating before crouching to slowly stroke her too.

“Why wouldn’t she? Doesn’t look like you’ve upset her or anything. Plus, if she didn’t like you, she’d probably be staying away instead.” He gently picked up the dog and he sat down cross-legged, placing her on his lap.

“Are you supposed to train her or something? Did your Father make you get a dog?” he wondered, looking up at Charlie as he kept a light hand on little Ginger’s back.

She hesitated before sitting down in front of him - holding her hand out for Ginger to sniff. 

She looked down at the question, focusing on stroking Ginger; the little puppy nuzzling into her hand and licking her fingertips lightly. “I… I thought I needed some company.” She answered quietly.

It was about time she figured that she would need another living being in the house. “This is some adorable company you keep then, hm?” he teased, petting the pup lightly on the head. “I think we can go about training her and all that after you’ve established that the little guy, um, girl, isn’t as weird as you think.”

She could think of more adorable company, but that wasn’t something she was about to admit out loud.

“So you’ll help?” She smiled at him, petting Ginger’s ears. Ginger let out a happy bark, licking Charlie’s hand before leaning up to lick Jay’s face.

He let out a chuckle at the little licks, holding her up and away from him as he nodded. “Of course! Never thought I’d spend the day off like this, but this is still pretty sweet,” he said, “Do you have a leash for her yet? We can take her out for a walk first, so she can be more familiar with the area.” He stood up and placed the small creature back on the ground, helping Charlie back to her feet as well.

“I do have a leash, they gave me one at the shelter~” She stood and headed to take it out of the cubpoard. “I’m supposed to get her a cage for nights, though~?” She made a face, clearly not happy about it. “Do you think I have to? I’m... not sure I want a cage anywhere near my home~”

Charlie took a step to the left, frowning as the dog once again copied her movements exactly - no matter how many times she told her to stay.

She sighed, and headed to the phone. She needed help, and there was only one person she knew.

“Jay? Can you come over? I… need some help~”

Jay picked up his cellphone – briefly interrupting his little movie marathon for his day-off. “Charlie? What’s up? What do you need help with?” he asked, sitting up on his bed.

She blushed slightly, embarrassed. “I, uh… I got a dog. But she’s… strange.” She frowned at the dog, who only cocked it’s head, continuing to watch her quietly from where she sat at her feet.

He raised an eyebrow to himself, half-smiling on the other end of the line. The image of her with a dog did seem… cute. Especially if it were some puppy. “Wait, why’d you get one? I mean I can come over and help, but I don’t think I’m the most qualified person to be, I don’t know, training a dog.”

“…” She didn’t want to admit that she’d got a dog because she’d been lonely since he’d left. “Please, just… come over? You can come now, can’t you?”

Well, it wasn’t like he could really say no to her. It wasn’t like he had anything better to do. “I’ll be there in a while,” he told her, dropping the call to dress up and catch a bus.

It was a bit funny that the first time he went here, he was blindfolded and passed out in the back seat of a car, and now he knew how to get here relatively easily. He shot Charlie a text to say that he had arrived, and then knocked on her front door.

“Thankyou~” She let out a breath of relief.

When he got there, she was sat on the sofa, the dog - a young beagle - still sat at her feet. They both looked up at the sound of the knock, and Charlie called out “It’s unlocked, come on in~”

Jay opened the door and took a pause to see the puppy at her feet, smiling widely at the sight. He was right, it was cute. “I don’t really see much of a problem, he… or, uh, she seems pretty well-behaved,” he pointed out as he closed the door behind him. “So what’s the problem?”

“She just follows me, constantly!” She exclaimed. “Look~” She stood, and the beagle stood too.

She took a few steps in each direction to show how closely the dog followed her, before looking back up at him in exasperation. “It’s actually creepy~”

She looked at her for a moment, almost scrutinising her. “Would you do anything I asked?” She tilted her head slightly.

She nodded. “Close and lock the door then.” She waited until she had before beckoning her closer. “Take off your clothes.”

That confused Grace, but she did as she was told, stripping naked and coming closer to Charlie. “Miss?”

She smiled slightly at her obedience, standing and moving close; circling and examining her, but not touching. “My own body is marred.” She told her quietly. “To properly study female biology I need you.” She moved back in front of her, looking at her seriously. “You will do exactly as I say, understand?”

Grace blushed brightly but nodded. “Yes, Miss…” She needed this money if she was going to open a seamstress shop some day. Nothing was going to scare her away.
