After the first date I was not sure how she felt about me. She gave me a smile, but it was a vague smile. The corners of her mouth lightly twitched and she waved a hand as she said good-bye. That was it. There was no kiss, no hug, nothing to let me know that there may be another date or that I should ask her on one. I had her phone number on a piece of a post-it note she found at the bottom of her purse but I did not know whether things went well enough for me to call. I hoped it had and I told myself I would wait two days before I thought about calling her.
I found myself waking up the next morning thinking about her. Nothing around me could block out the thoughts. Some how though, I made it through the day but when night came around I decided to call. I couldn’t wait.
The phone rang twice. I felt something rise in my throat. I kept it down. She answered. “Hello.” She said.
I froze. I didn’t think I would get this far and I never planned on what to say.
There was a long pause and then she broke in.
“I’m sorry, I don’t know who this is.”
“Oh,” I laughed. “It’s you’re date from last night.”
(It’s a pretty corny phone call)
Anyway, we set up a date for the next night. I was to meet her at a different restaurant a little ways from my apartment, walking distance.
As I was getting ready my hands shook and I miss-buttoned my shirt three times. I decided against a tie, I did not wan to be too dressy.
I walked up to the restaurant and as I did I could not stop thinking about what to say. She led the conversation last time and would she want me to lead this time? If she does then would I have enough to talk about? I’m painfully quiet.
When I arrived at the restaurant she was already there. As I walked up to her I cursed myself under my breath. She must have heard me though. She greeted me with a hug and as she had her arms wrapped around me she whispered in my ear. “It’s okay.”
Then we sat down at a table and talked and waited for the server.
(It was a basic dinner just a chat.)
As we stepped out front I helped her put on her coat. As I was going to say thank you and goodbye she leaned in and kissed me. She pulled away too quickly for me to return it. She stepped back and looked at me and then she looked down.
She took my hand and nodded her head. We began walking and as we did I kissed her neck. She looked at me and smiled.
The next morning I woke up and she was gone. I heard the floor creak. She was walking back to the bed wearing only my unbuttoned shirt.
We stayed in bed for the rest of the day.
