During qualifying for his third Grand Prix, Prost's McLaren suffered a suspension failure, causing him to crash off the circuit and break his wrist. He then missed the next Grand Prix at Long Beach. McLaren apparently offered James Hunt one million pounds to replace Prost at Long Beach, but right before the race, Hunt tore his knee ligaments in a skiing accident.
