Josie sighed into his shoulder; not wanting to let her dad go. “so you.. you are not going too turn it off?” She whispered softly closing her eyes.
“No.” He shook his head, pulling back so he could press a kiss against her head. “At least not for now, I promise.”

Jo was stirring some sugar into her cup when she heard Ric walking out of the bedroom, turned around raising her brow at him before taking a sip of her coffee, “Well good morning to you too.” She replies putting her glass down and pouring another cup for him, if he even drank coffee. She only knew him briefly as a vampire had little knowledge on how he was other than that he seemed to hide his blood drinking pretty well. “Told you, you weren’t crazy about this. How do you feel?”
“Like hell.” Ric replied simply, he was just glad she was actually here because he sure as hell needed her and anything was better than drinking right? Letting out a small sigh, he crossed his arms over his chest watching her for a moment “I mentioned that I missed you last night, right?” he hoped he had. “Because I really have.” He wasn’t up for playing the usual cat and mouse game they’d played when she was alive before, he just needed to be honest. That was all.

josie stills when he pulled her in; but she sank into the cuddle and locked her arms back around him a few tears leaking onto her cheeks as she held onto him like she wouldn’t again.
He didn’t want to let go, maybe he was stupid for wanting to ever leave the girls like this and he knew he couldn’t now there was too much riding on him for that to ever be the case.

Jo offers a small smile with a nod, she knew Ric’s drinking and she liked her own bottle of wine time to time as well. “Alright, you lush.” She shakes her head keeping an arm around him partly worried he’d fall on his ass if she didn’t. “I don’t know, you’ve always been a little crazy but in this, not so much.”
The next morning Jo had found it nearly impossible to sleep at night, it wasn’t something she was used to anymore. Once the sun started to show through the curtains she slipped from the room looking back at Alaric passed out still before going into the kitchen to start a pot of coffee.
Ric awoke, his head hurting but at least he could say that hangovers as a vampire were much less awful than when he was still human. Looking over at the other side of the bed, it was only then that he’d remembered...in parts at least, that Jo was back or maybe she wasn’t and he’d hallucinated it all.
Letting out a deep breath, he moved to stand heading into the kitchen his first instinct being to find the girls who he just needed to apologize to but he was stopped in his tracks as he spotted Jo making a cup of coffee, “So you are real then.” He chuckled somewhat.
Ric shook his head, standing and moving to bring Josie into an embrace his own tears still clear in his voice "I'm not going anywhere." He confirmed, saying no more simply holding onto what he had left. That's what Caroline would have wanted.
Ric gave a nod, "I would love if you stayed with me, considering I'm more than sure I'll be waking up and as you've said, not remembering what happened." Alcohol was both Ric's greatest ally and enemy, he turned too it during the bad times and mostly that was what helped as apposed to most other things. "I just need to be sure I'm not going mad, you know?"
Ric probably knew that more than he wanted to admit, but she was right he couldn't do that to the girls he couldn't leave them not now. "It would have been a good life, I guess we can't have that not anymore but we can always have another one here." Yeah it was different from what they'd wanted sixteen years ago but that didn't mean they couldn't have something different. It was only as she spoke that he was reminded of his intoxication, moving to run his thumb across her cheek "Is it bad I don't want to sleep? I'm worried that if I do then you would have just been a dream or an hallucination." He let out a sigh, "but you're right I need to sleep."
"And do what? Let it destroy me while you and your sister need a father, that isn't fair on you." Ric shook his head, letting out a sigh as he crossed his arms. "I love you, I'm doing this to protect and help you. If you can't see that then I'll go." He wasn't sure where his mind was at, dropping to sit on the sofa as his eyes began to release tears.
Ric nodded, his eyes slightly red from the crying as he held onto her as if his life depended on it. He felt as if he was so lost and if only she'd found him earlier and he'd been able to know he had someone beyond his kids and his friends, "I know, I'm just scared how long that's gonna last." He admitted in a whisper, it was welcomed all the strength she had and while Ric would always want to protect her at least he could be at ease that he didn't need to do it all. "I never stopped missing you, loving you. We could have had so much more and we ended up with nothing." He let out a deep breath, his arms still wrapped around her tightly "I'm not going anywhere, at least I'm trying. I'm here. I love you." He only spoke loud enough for her to hear, his voice sounded like he'd been talking none stop for years.
"Ah well fair enough." Ric gave nothing but a sigh as he poured himself yet another drink. "You got the information then?" That's what he cared about, Klaus could kill Kai and get Caroline back he had forgotten about the rest of his worries for a moment.
Maybe this was exactly what he needed to hear, to be told exactly what he'd lose if he went through with it but he was also in a world of his own and that meant his judgment was as out of what he should be doing as possible. "I'm hearing you, just about anyway.." he had almost sobbed and already felt guilty at the thought of harming the girls even if he considered what he was doing to be the right thing. "I just need time..I don't know how to explain it but it's like when Jo was killed. Everything just became so blank, I didn't know what I was doing."
"What?.." he paused looking directly at the brunette. "How the hell do you know what she was thinking?" His voice a mix between anger and confusion. Ric simply failed to understand how that was possible.
Looking away as the tears began to come in streams, whether it be the amount of drinks he had or a mixture of all he was feeling on top of everything else, he finally looked up to meet her gaze "And I need you. You can't die again, I couldn't handle that happening again...I can't handle anyone else dying." His voice cracking as he spoke every word, he wasn't going to pretend that he still wasn't hanging on by a thread or that he would try to be strong but he couldn't promise that he wouldn't crack in front of the kids. "I really have missed you." Was all he could fathom before he simply broke, leaning into her touch before he simply pulled her into his embrace. "I'll try to keep you from that.." he whispered between a long moment of sobs and crying. He just hoped she wasn't a figment of his imagination, his own subconscious torturing him. He just needed her to be here.

“Maybe but easier for who?” She asks, Jo’s whole world was once her job, she left her family, her home just become a doctor, to live a normal life. Stumbling into Ric was a happy accident, same as getting pregnant. She only had a few loved ones left and if Alaric shut off his humanity that was even one less. “So you’re going to have them imprisoned? What happens if they leave that compound and run into you?” She couldn’t picture him harming one of the twins but a vampire with no humanity was willing to anything, they had no remorse why would they care? And if he ever turned it on again the guilt would kill him. Jo looked away from him, hearing the girls had a good life wasn’t bad but hearing that he felt that Caroline was a better parent than him to their kids did hurt. “The thing that pains me the most Alaric is how little you seem to value yourself as their father, which you being their father was one of the best things to me. Because I knew you would be a great father and I know you could have done it alone because that’s the man you are.” She chewed the inside of her lip thinking before she shakes her head, “But you moved forwards, you gave yourself time and you pushed through it. Don’t take the easy way, that’s not the man you are. We both survived terrible odds and yes, I died and yes Caroline died, I know it hurts but those girls need their father, they hurt too.”
“I’d like to think you but I guess the answer is me huh?” He just had no other idea how to function, feeling useless and unable to bring back the one person the girls wanted...what kind of father was that? Running his hands over his features, before he simply buried his face in them “I’m sure I could have but I did not expect to have to sit there and watch the kids go through this, it’s breaking me because I can’t bring the person they need back and I would happily switch places if I had to. They need Caroline.” He could not be angry nor sad because she didn’t need that...”I don’t know what kind of man I am anymore, they don’t deserve to have to see me like this Jo.”

“He will, Alaric. I promise you that.” Hayley said as she pulled away from him. She looked at him for a moment before her hand flew across his face in a slap. “No, nope.” Hayley said as she stared at him. “The girls and yourself are free to stay at the Compound but you are not turning your humanity off. Those children need you. You do not get to abandon them right now.” The hybrid said as she looked to him. “You turn your humanity off , and I swear to god the first thing I will do after killing Kai is come and kick your ass for being a bloody prick. What would Caroline think for godsake, Alaric?”
Taking the slap with only a slight flinch, though even he had to admit it wasn’t expected “She’s gone Hayley, I thought I’d be able to do this without her but I can’t.” He held back his anger that seemed to be becoming more easy to trigger, letting out nothing more than a groan “Maybe it’ll be worth the ass kicking bug this id my choice no one else’s.”
"To me your safety is what matters, so yeah it is the same to me." Ric couldn't stop his anger at the situation, looking in the direction of his daughter "Then what is?! Because trust me, I've spent the last twenty years losing people over and over again. I vowed to protect you all including her and I couldn't do that. So I'm sorry if my way of dealing doesn't suit you." He let out a breath, "Then I will, I could make you Josie I'd just prefer to allow you to go on your own accord."
"It'd be easier if you could.." Ric commented with a small sigh, he wished she'd stuck around that they could have lived the life they were meant to and he couldn't explain to her for once second how he'd barely gotten through losing her, losing any woman that had been a part of his life...it just seemed like he was cursed. "I know but I wouldn't risk their safety, they'd go to the compound be under the protection of the original family and Hope one of the most powerful witches in the city.." he let out a small breath. "They'd lose me but only until they got Caroline back, I know you won't like hearing it completely but she was the decent parent. She knew what to do and now I've lost that, they've lost that." Raising a brow at her question, "I went travelling with Damon and Bonnie, I drank like hell and I almost dug myself a hole." He shrugged, he was not afraid to admit how he had handled things when she was gone and neither would he be afraid to admit that it had been a bad time.
