Obsession
Food has always been an important part of my family; my friends mum was a cook, cooking brought together my uncle and my step aunt and as a family China Town and the curry mile were regular stops for meals out.
But it wasn't until coming out of an eating disorder ward that I began to question our societies obsession with food. It's either all or nothing.
Food is everywhere and one of the Uks biggest industries, with cafes popping up at alarming rates but alongside this is a booming diet industry. Food is now being marketed as a treat and an indulgence, alternatives are the new norm and restricting is encouraged.
Most influences will have a diet or food range which is branded as a healthy alternative - but to what?
The ward I was on always talked about aspiring for normal eating behaviour but how can one reach this when it's fashionable to be fussy?
Part of the symptoms of an eating disorder is having an obsession with food, and I can see these symptoms in our society. It might not have an eating disorder - per se - but disordered eating is on the rise and bringing down recovering members of society with it.
How can I recover when my "funny habits" are considered desirable by some?
