Does anyone want to f-ing read anymore?! pt I
With our fast-paced society and constant visual-audio stimulation, it seems like article-reading is a dying form of entertainment.
Books will always live on. But blogs, online magazines, and columns seem to be scrolled passed. After all, why do the work of reading, when you likely can find a youtube video on the same topic? Or even better, a 30 second tiktok that gives you the meat of said article.
What do we (writers) do? Do we give in to the short attention span that most of us have thanks to social media? Or do we continue to write seemingly long-winded articles that will be overlooked?
I mean, even poems have been shortened to just a couple to a few lines.
And have you ever watched an old movie? Like from the 70s or older? The scenes are longer, and calmer. Even in action movies.
Which begs the question:
Have we humans naturally become less attentive or has media made us this way?
We were completely happy with the long scenes in the movies. Most of us even still watch these movies for the nostalgia. I can enjoy the first star wars movie because it was introduced to me at a very young age. But if I hadn't seen it until now, would I feel the same? It's easy to blame social media scrolling for our new-found collective attention shortage but in honesty, it started before social media.
Maybe it's from filmmakers wanting to one-up each other; "how can I make my film more interesting than that one?" Enter the quick-cut.
Children's cartoons? Today they have short scenes, and vibrant colors. Just 20 years ago, the colors were muted and the scenes were painfully long, ensuring they walked through every. single. detail. This is why when you, Milliennial, put on your childhood favorite, that kid your babysitting shouts, "I'M BORED" while you stand in shock, debating whether or not you argue your case about why this is the greatest kid's show of all time (and I know you've argued your case before, don't lie.)
it's been a while. . .
And what have I been up to? Oh, you know taking Broadway classes, singing poorly and loudly during car rides, watching & re-watching -- then re-watching, again -- 90s romcoms, romanticizing and fantasizing.
It's been a harrowing and often beautiful few months of self-reflection, depression, doubt, dancing, and courage. My footing has been shaky but it's growing in stability and I am learning so much about myself. And un-learning even more.
when I release into the satin below me, I am reminded of my divinity
mahogany tendrils curl around my crown, and my eardrums flutter at the shallow sound of my breath, soft and vanilla
cinnamon and clove hangs in the air, a gentle purple glow radiates from something, somewhere
in this moment, I am all I've longed to be; sensual, loving, free
in this moment, I am

Humorous, how he didn't want a cookie cutter life. He mistook stability & comfort for boredom. Yet, he lacked passion & romance, depth, and the ability to romanticize the rain and the crackle of cracked pavement.
