Absolutely, and I’ll tack on my two cents as a 2023 arlefuri shipper.

The majority of hate came from people who were asleep at the wheel during the archon quest and it showed. Arlecchino as a character had no interest in harming Furina because her goal was to gain hold of the gnosis and prevent the flood of Fontaine. Nothing more. She aimed to secure her home (and her children by proxy) and secure the object of her mission. Attacking Furina was a desperate measure, though I hesitate to use ‘desperate.’

A lot of the argument boiled down to “furina’s scared of arlecchino!” And “arlecchino’s an abuser!” Both of which are contextually disproven if one were to pay a modicum of attention to the storyline. Furina was afraid of being found out — and this Foçalors’ plan being ruined — more than she was afraid of being murdered. Arlecchino being an abuser is a gross oversimplification of her character and a misrepresentation of how she behaves. She’s emotionally neglectful and absolutely grooming the children in the House to become child soldiers, but that does not constitute the shallow “woman beater/murderer” image the term garners. Again, complexity is lost on these people.

Even knowing all this, many in the community who liked the pairing experienced RELENTLESS harassment, and still do!! Woah!! There have been several posts and shortform slideshows that have laid out these exact concepts in a far more digestible format that have gone otherwise ignored or overlooked by the community at large.

In the same breath, a majority of these users would swoon over Dottore and woobify his worse atrocities. Childe and Rerir are looped into that “I can’t fix him but he’s fine how he is/I can make him worse” when Childe is a weapon of war, Rerir was an active participant in the on-screen ethnic cleansing of the crimson moon dynasty, and Dottore is himself. But god forbid Arlecchino attack an archon, deflect when she didn’t have the gnosis, and move on.

That’s why I never believe a Genshin fan saying they like “toxic yuri” because the second Arlefuri comes up, everyone is the morality police. Lesbian and wlw couples have to be SQUEAKY CLEAN and PG and WHOLESOME whilst the mlm/gay couples and hetero couples get to fall into messy and arguably more toxic dynamics.

And no disrespect to anyone who is a fan of arlebina, but most of the internal hate came from arlebina shippers. I think that needs to be acknowledged as well; not quite so sure how that slipped under the radar and now we’re both semi-fine with one another.

It truly pisses me off. All of this boils down to everyone being dead quiet on the frontal lobe when lore complexity appears. English hoyolab needs to be eradicated

I’ve seen and read some of the fics in question — to each their own, really, and the tags did warn me — but my biggest gripe is that it’s just torture porn for the already tortured character. Kicking her while she’s down, if you will. Then comes the matter of completely bastardizing arlecchino as a character, which pisses me off enough, and turning her into some rapist with no other complexity outside of “let’s completely violate lady Furina oh ho ho ho.” Blegh. Boring boo tomato tomato tomato. I despise this notion of making Arlecchino “scary” when she is intimidating enough in specific ways.

On that same topic of bastardizing Arlecchino, there’s another phenomenon in the arlefuri circle that’s not really helping the ship’s reputation: the artists and animators who dumb down their relationship to Furina being afraid and Arlecchino being uncharacteristically forward. It’s cartoonish really (and rarely funny) but it also follows in the footsteps of making Arlecchino seem like she’s actively harassing Furina? Which she absolutely is not? She’s a grown woman with a job in diplomacy who sends cakes to a diplomatic contact she deeply affronted. Dare I say the last time she interacted with Furina was during this most recent event where they sat next to each other during a tea party. If she were THAT forward we would know about it by now.

The appeal in the ship is the slow burn, I agree. I absolutely love the slow burn aspect because I just cannot get over the trope of learning to trust someone. Both Arlecchino and Furina could benefit from mutual trust, and there are plenty of fics exploring that. I will say, there is only one fic I like that properly explores the fact that Furina could be afraid of Arlecchino (and chooses to be in a relationship anyway, fully intending to try and trust her) and that would be “A Fatui Harbinger In Lady Furina’s Court.”

Sadly unfinished. I pray for the author’s return quite often.

Overall I’m rather proud of the majority of the fandom softening up on arlefuri but I’m pissed that we’re not acknowledging how disgusting it is that such complex characters deserve a complex ship, and yet they’re either completely misrepresented or turned into something they aren’t. Like the toxic shit does make for good fanart but it just feels like an over exaggerated bastardization of both characters 😭 they deserve better. As funny as the cake line is I don’t really think arle would reach out more than that bc I’m SURE she has the sense to realize Furina needs her space and she has. In my heart there’s a 200k slowburn where Furinas writing for a play and needs some inspiration and things lead to arle being her muse and thus them slowly growing from apprehension to neutrality to “what are we actually”.
