Leap of Faith
I was initially hesitant. Bills and mortgages have a knack for devouring a significant chunk of my income. But sometimes we just have to bite the bullet and invest in a little something for ourselves.
Since I became the head of facility, I’ve got a lot on my plate. Leading my team, managing the hospital, and ensuring everything runs smoothly requires me to be as mobile as a cheetah chasing its prey. Having a reliable set of wheels can make your life so much easier, not to mention adding a touch of suave to my image.
Let's talk about my trusty brain, Ejii-chan, a.k.a. “Head of Operations”. My loyal companion, partner in crime, and partner in chief-ing. Making this decision together shows that the power of teamwork and the importance of having a sounding board genuinely takes you to greater heights. With these, I would like to express my utmost admiration for the growth and achievements that we have attained together.
In conclusion, I am profoundly proud of the remarkable progress we have made as a team. From our humble beginnings as coffee enthusiasts and gaming aficionados, we have evolved into a dynamic duo, united by a shared vision for a comfortable and fulfilling life. These accomplishments showcase our joint efforts and determination to broaden our horizons, enabling us to navigate the world with increased freedom and autonomy.

2 Days in Manila
Despite the increasing costs associated with domestic air travel, I was required to make a brief 2-day visit to Manila (MNL) while on duty in order to collect our passports from the visa centers. I took a night flight from Puerto Princesa (PPS) to MNL to avoid the traffic that is expected after landing.
The next day after my arrival in MNL, I went to Dusit Thani in Makati to pick Ejii-chan's passport up on her behalf after renewing her Japan visa after 12 damn years. "Okaeri, Ejii-chan!" I told her upon receiving her passport with Japan's vignette on it. "Looks like you're coming home with me!"
I then made my way to Chino Roces to retrieve my passport. While I am reasonably certain that I will be granted a visa to enter the UK, it's quite normal to experience occasional anxiety regarding such matters. I parked my vehicle on the mezzanine level of the building and patiently waited until 2 pm before entering the centre to collect my passport. It was handed to me in a securely sealed black plastic envelope, ensuring the confidentiality of the sensitive document.
Later that day, I made the decision to book a flight to Manchester (MAN). Being meticulous about my travel arrangements, I carefully researched airlines that operate flights to MAN while simultaneously maintaining constant communication with my sister, who happens to be a British citizen. I find it essential to prioritize comfort and value when making such choices. My sister, G, emphasized the importance of selecting flights carefully, even if it means spending a bit more for a superior experience. After careful consideration, I opted to fly with Etihad to MAN, disregarding a significantly cheaper option with a Chinese airline. Sometimes, investing a little extra for comfort and convenience is worthwhile. After three years, I'm finally meeting my nephew, Theo!
Afterwards, I made a reservation for a flight back to El Nido (ENI). It is worth noting that the flights to ENI are considerably 2-3x more costly compared to those landing in Puerto Princesa (PPS). However, I was determined not to undertake another 5–6-hour journey by land, so I made the decision to proceed with booking the flight.
Morning flights are truly an incredible experience. There's something magical about witnessing the world wake up from above, as the sun slowly rises and casts its warm, golden rays upon the earth. The soothing hum of the aircraft engines, coupled with the gentle turbulence of the morning air, creates an ambiance that is both exhilarating and serene.

What a day it has been! Today, I had the pleasure of attending an all-expense paid Malaria conference in Puerto Princesa. Yep. Who knew that spending a day discussing mosquitoes and their pesky diseases could be so riveting?
Anyway, after absorbing all that fascinating knowledge about those damn tiny bloodsuckers, Ejii-chan and I decided to go to the mall. And nope, we weren’t there for some retail therapy (although that wouldn't have been a bad idea). We were there on a mission to purchase items for our upcoming Anniversary Fellowship Night on the 28th.
Finding prizes for this event was no easy task. The waifu had to channel her inner Sherlock Holmes to uncover the most enticing goodies that would make our members of the staff jump with joy. From quirky mugs to the most innocent packs of IPC (instant pancit canton), we scoured every corner of the mall until we found the perfect loot for the occasion.
At the end of the day, well, I think Ejii-chan and I deserve a pat on the back for surviving a Malaria conference and conquering the shoppes all in one day. It may not be the most glamorous achievement, but hey, sometimes it's the little victories that make life so damn sweet.
It’s 4:04 AM and I’m back in my lair in El Nido. Can’t stop thinking about getting a new car to use here in the province.

Dati pinapanuod ko lang sa Youtube kung ano pakiramdam sa loob ng tren na tumatakbo sa bilis na 280kph.
Now it’s my 2nd time aboard the Shinkansen. Nung 1st time kasi bata pa ako kaya wala pa akong pakialam nu’n.
‘Di mo maiwasang mag-isip na “sana ganito din sa Pilipinas.”

I’m writing this while at my parents’ farm house for a quick visit prior to my flight back to MNL on the 29th. Honestly, I love everything here except for one major thing: the shitty internet connection.
Located about 60km south of PPS, their home is shrouded by luscious greens and clear blue skies. The beach is just a few minutes walk away. At night, specially during the monsoon season, you may actually hear the waves crashing from where this house is erected. A legion of farm animals routinely greets them every morning.
It’s good that my parents left the city for good and settled in a laid back scenario. I personally believe that their decision to move here will increase their lifespan by a few more years. Life in PPS isn’t the same as how it was in the 1990s anymore. It’s utterly crowded and chaotic. Traffic density increased a thousandfold. Food prices are double. Here, they’re living the conventional life of a retiree.
Tapos malayo pa sa mga mangungutang.

As much as I wanted to fill this page with daily entries and photographs, I would most certainly succumb to failure due to unpredictable schedules and exhaustion.
I attempted to keep a daily journal before. It was fun at first, seeing your progress day by day, laughing at every stupid thing that you wrote. But one backlog. Just one backlog and I'm out of sync. Then I lose.
The past few days have been really busy. I had hands on and virtual meetings day after day with the DoH, the Provincial Health Office, et cetera, et cetera. Then, tomorrow, I'll be driving back home to PPS to meet with the Governor. Here's a funny story. A few days ago, his secretary called me and asked if I was Dr. Reggie's nephew. Dr. Reggie is my uncle and is a close friend to the governor. They grew up and went to school together. My grandmother was even once their teacher back in elementary. That's why his secretary had to call me.
Anyway, it's the end of my duty for May...at least inside the hospital. I still have responsibilities outside after my exit tomorrow. I'll be going away from ENI for a while to spend some time for myself. But what's making me more excited is that I'd be seeing Ejii-chan again in a few days. And yes, samgyup with Dr. Gela, my cousin, tomorrow.

I drove my parents to the Senior Citizens' gathering in PPS and decided to kill time at SM. I intentionally went to the mall to buy a new mouse since the last that I had isn't perfectly responsive anymore.
So, I asked the kuya at the store, "Phop 795? Sir, do you accept card payments? Wala akong cash, e."
I actually despise handling cash recently. So, if you knew me personally, I'm not the kind of person who stores cash in his wallet. Even Ejii-chan sometimes gets irritated when we're in a "cash only" establishments and I don't have any.
"Yes, sir." He replied. "But for transactions worth Php 1,000 and up lang po." He added.
"Ahh, okay. Sige, kuya, kunin ko 'yung Octopath Traveler II for Switch."
Mouse lang dapat bibilhin ko, eh. Napahamak na naman.

Ang toxic nitong consultant ko. Hirap talaga kapag surgical ka tapos ‘yung jowa mo medical. Minsan pag-aawayan niyo talaga ‘yung management ng pasyente.
Gumaganti ‘to kasi pinalo ko ng needle holder ‘yung retractor n’ya nung nag-aasist s’ya sa OR ko. Hahaha.
IM: Bakit n’yo pinakialaman ‘yung hydration nito? Aware ba kayo na mababa EF ng patient na ‘yan? Ano pang point na nirefer n’yo sa amin kung papakialaman n’yo lang din management namin?
Surgery: Post-sigmoidectomy kasi. We’re preventing 3rd space losses. Kung mag-congest, problema n’yo na yan.

I had a lot of sleep in my office today. We were supposed to be with Dr. Vergeire at the airport around 5:30am today but I ended up asking Armel, our Chief Nurse:
“Anyare, Sir Armel?” I asked.
“Ewan ko ba, Doc. Di rin ako nagising sa alarm. Si Kuya Dan (the driver) di rin ako ginising. Haha.” He replied.
Instead, we opted to visit an old friend, Dr. De Guzman in his clinic to talk about hospital stuff. I told him that I want him back in our hospital. He was excitedly amenable.
We spent the rest of the day in our respective offices, only to meet during meal times. Sir Armel, our Chief Nurse has been very fond of cooking for us after receiving donations of a stove and random cookware from Doc Phillip, the PhD. I sometimes invite them in the conference room immediately beside my office. But sometimes, we just love to stay at the nurses’ station pantry.
L-R: Dr. Eric (Chief of Clinics), Sir Armel (Chief Nurse) me, Nurse Marie, Nurse MC, Kuya Dan (the Driver).

The day the Health Secretary Vergeire visited our hospital.
She was intimidating at first, biased on the fact that she is the highest ranking doctor under government service. She’s in the ranks with Francisco Duque and Juan Flavier, as I thought. However, after a few minutes, I realized that it doesn’t take an ocean to be able to talk to her and approach her. “She has the vibe of an IDS (Infectious Diseases Specialist). Mukhang masungit pero mabait pala.” I told Ejii-chan. She listened to our concerns, visited every patient, and expressed her support to our plans to upgrade and expand the hospital.
I usually see her on TV or the internet. But today, I encountered a rarity with matching tapik-tapik pa sa likod ko as we talked about the hospital’s future. “Sobrang linis at aliwalas ng hospital n’yo. At walang amoy ospital. We’ll work altogether to make further upgrades and expansion to this hospital.” It was a proud moment for the father of the hospital.
After the visit, I told all my staff thru our Facebook GC, “Proud ako sa inyong lahat. Good job, everyone!”
I then proceeded to the munisipyo to represent our hospital in an inter-agency meeting with the DOH OIC Secretary, the Mayor and Vice Mayor, representatives of some Congressmen, and the Municipal Health Office to tackle an undying issue of El Nido: the sustained cases of Acute Gastroenteritis and Amoebiasis in the municipality.
I was driven back by our driver, sir Dan, together with the chief nurse Armel, and staff nurse Gretchen, who bought groceries from a nearby talipapa before heading back to the hospital.
The week long prep finally bore its fruits! Now I have to try to sleep because Sec Vergeire is requesting us to be at the airport by 5:30 AM for a photo op prior to their flight back to MNL. Apparently, she forgot to take pictures with us during her visit. Lol.

I’m back in ENI to do some final prep for DOH USec Vergeire’s visit on the 12th. I took a late night flight to PPS which got delayed for about 30 minute. I shared the flight with a colleague’s best friend, Doc Phillip. He said that he’ll be in PPS for 15 days to render some lectures. He’s a PhD but I’m used to calling him Doc Phil. Some few years back, Dr. Eric and Dr. Phillip and I used to spend breakfasts in ENI altogether (Doc Phil cooks really fucking well, by the way) It’s was nice bumping onto him again after roughly 2 years.
Fast forward to 5 hours after, I arrived at ENI from PPS. The new driver, Sir Albert, took the road as I slept undisturbed all throughout the trip.
Oyasuminasai. Mali. Ohayou na pala. I have to meet with my staff at 3 hours from now.

Yesterday was EzRA’s anniversary but because we are a couple of highly introverted baked potatoes, we opted to spend the whole day at home and order crabs from our suki in Farmers’ Market. The crabs (いただきます!), who offered their lives to make us happy, were paired with chimichurri that I made freshly from scratch.
Cheers to another year!

Our flight back to MNL last night was unusually turbulent. Besides my excitement for flying with 5J’s new Airbus A321 CEO, my heart raced because the aircraft was shaking for almost half of the 60-minute flight. I found out that there’s an LPA along the path of our flight upon watching the news when we arrived home.
I’ll be flying back to PPS next week to meet with the DOH Undersecretary Vergeire. In relation to this, I released a memo to my AO (Administrative Officer) and AA (Administrative Assistant) later today to mandate every department to prepare and make efforts in tidying up their respective areas.
Anyway, I took a break today so I could extend my lifespan.
