“look i’ll apologize, i went too far in putting that image in your head but at the end of the day it’s your fault for bringing him up of all people in your list of scenarios. you set yourself up for that and i had to take the bait, you gave me no other option.” while erin always had a flair for the dramatics it was always in a subtle way, little lies and shows she’d put on to trick people, playing the role she had designated for herself since her youth. with newt he brought out a different side of it, over the top and hilarious, the two of them always going above and beyond, and he was one of the only people who could make her smile till her mouth hurt. she had to love him for that, being one of the only people she could feel safe enough around to do that. “that’s because i mind my own business, i do my own thing and stay away from even a chance of that happening. it’s all apart of the perks of being so independent.” it was a nice way to put a spin on her having always avoided her parents, them pushing her away, making sure she’d never want to be around them in any setting. she had no reason to seek them out and accidentally see that, hiding herself in her room or spending as much time out of her home as she could. she could hardly say what her parents relationship even was, if there was love there or not, passion. her own family were strangers to her, only knowing each other in the wounds they loved to dig into each others skin. “well don’t sound so hesitant, it should be considered an honor to win me something. of all the people here i chose you for that job.” she’d rather it be him than anyone else, be able to relax without her guard up, her walls and her act a shield for her. she did it to herself, and sometimes it was fun to do, but more often than not she was exhausted by it. she was exhausted by herself and this life she found herself living, but what other option did she have but to do that? “why not? it’s just a little bit of fun, we can even place bets on who here is most likely to fall for it and give in.” despite their closeness they had very different ideas of fun when it came to such things, newt often being more of her brain than she was. erin was all impulse, jump right into things and get what she wanted, not thinking of consequences. newt was the one usually to stop her when he could, though most of the times he wasn’t quick enough, or she didn’t share soon enough for him to help. “maybe this was all just a front, me protecting myself because i know you could never love me back.” again she spoke with their over the top dramatics, wishing she had chosen newt as someone to fall for. it’d be a lot less painful than the choices she had made for herself, even if he did reject her in that other universe. “no, i would not let that happen. your hair is your signature thing, i don’t know if i’d even be able to be friends with you if you shaved it off. i’d have to buy you a wig just to make you tolerable to be around. fine, if you’re going to be so serious about the logistics of it then i’ll buy it for you personally.”
“yeah, yeah, just blame the guy who talks too much and doesn’t think before he speaks. typical. criminal.” newt replies in amusement at erin’s response, eyes warm with his fondness as he glances at her. honestly, it was always fun to muck around with erin like this. newt was pretty sure that they’d known each other long enough that the back and forth was second nature, and sometimes you just needed that. you just needed to not think, and to laugh, and well, that wasn’t all the they did of course. sometimes thing’s weren’t this good. but newt could happily appreciate when they were. he arches a brow at erin’s confident reply, lips curving even as he attempt to stifle his smile with his curious, “oh, is it? well. excuse me. i didn’t realize i was speaking to hilary clinton herself. will you be offering a seminar on how to achieve your level of familial emancipation? will you teach me your ways?” the teasing is gentle because well, newt knows what’s really thinly veiled in those comments and he’s hoping not to disturb too much of it because he’s been there. he understands it. honestly, he’s been striving for his own independence, otherwise known as freedom, from his family for as long as he can remember. he knows that erin’s different, though. that some part of her at least used to want her father’s approval, and newt can only imagine that that’s worse. he hasn’t sought out his parents approval ever, from what he can remember. their love, maybe but, well. he’s honestly even stopped doing that. “oh, i’m sorry i didn’t realize what a privilege i’d been given. my mistake.” newt puts a hand over his heart as he sorrowfully shakes his head, lips twitching as he asks her, “would you like to play that interaction through again and i’ll revise my response? i promise this time i will bring the proper level of excitement to the performance.” newt gives erin a pointed look at her question, shaking his head with a purse of his lips as he says, “... oh come on, erin, you know i’ve never been a big gambler. there are too many variables, i get too anxious about it, it brings back memories of my father’s crippling cat fighting gambling addiction, which can not lead to anything good when combined with my past trauma with chuck e cheese...” newt hopes the joke will distract erin from her goal, but he’s not holding out on it. when erin gets something in her mind newt isn’t sure there’s much anyone can do to stop her from doing it. and even if there was anyone who could, newt isn’t entirely sure it would be him. newt huffs a laugh at erin’s dramatics, eyes crinkling with it as he says, “oh, come on now, erin, this is getting less believable by the seconds. there’s not a person in the world who wouldn’t be able to love you.” newt means it, even if he doesn’t quite expect her to believe it. erin was... a lot, but she was a lot of good for the most part. she would be easy to love. newt should know, he loves her. even if it’s not romantic, it still counts. newt snorts at her retort, shaking with his laughter as he says, “a wig! god, you’d have to get me another beer just to get me into it. you’d have to keep me liquored up until the end of time, erin. is that what you want?” newt asks with an arch of his brow, “to turn me into a drunk all because you can’t stand the sight of my bare scalp?”
