It started one good morning, with Guew cuddling her still half-asleep son, ruffling his already messy hair, making it near impossible for him to keep cooking breakfast. That was when she decided that Jack would be it, and that he needed to tag someone else. With love and kindness, someone he cared for, and she only let go when he promised he’d do it. He was smiling as he promised, and even if the eggs were a little overcooked, no one present complained. Or if someone did, he was too busy scheming his next move to mind. It was always best to tag an unsuspecting victim, and his plan needed to be even more solid than concrete to work.
He wasn’t going to tag just anybody, but the smallest devil who had ever roamed this place.

Jack tagged Rosetta later in the morning, perhaps one hour before noon. He picked her up when she wasn’t paying attention, when she was lost in her own world, to cuddle and tickle her until she agreed to be it. He didn’t let go of her, however, not even when she cried for help, laughing more than angered. When they sat together, they started building up plans, that would crumble like castles made of cards, mostly because they were stupid. And because it was fun to create impossible, unthinkable ways to trick someone into becoming it, and especially a someone who cowered from hugs.
Lochan had not been here this morning, and had apparently been gone for the entire night. Which didn’t mean Rosetta was not ready to greet him in every way they could come up with. Some involved a hat and a disguise, others a cat or maybe five -that idea was deemed too cruel between two fits of laughter-, and a few more were meant to lure him with food.
In the end, she simply waited until he came back home -two hours late for dinner, and as they knew him, he’d refuse to eat anything before what he vaguely referred to as “the next meal”. She laced her boots in a hurry, threw a scarf around her neck, realized that she should have put on her coat before, but she wanted to catch him before he was inside. Before he had a chance to disappear in his room, or lock himself in a stubborn silence inside the art studio. She called out his name as she barely took the time to close the door behind her, and he looked up, startled.
She wrapped both her arms around his waist before he had a chance to say a word, snuggling against his warmth, and she felt his hand ruffling her hair when he asked if there was anything wrong, before apologizing for having been gone without telling anyone, and coming back so late, but also—
She cut him short by happily chirping that he was it now, and that he needed to find someone to tag. Someone he loved and cared for, of course, and Lochan wasn’t too thrilled with the idea, as he asked her who exactly had yet to be tagged. Well, had he never played tag ? Anyone and everyone could be it an infinite number of times, and it was up to him to show some kindness ! With those wise words, Rosetta freed him, and she ran back inside, leaving him standing there, puzzled.
Lochan felt like tagging someone who had already been it wasn’t very elegant, but would he have a choice ? He grimaced, and he skirted around the house, wondering if he really needed to partake in their games. The answer was: yes, probably, of course. For now, he wanted to find the old Saint-Bernard, as his only goal was to sleep away most of the afternoon, to catch back some rest and not think too much about his hunger. The dog was slouched on the back porch, almost snoring already, but he wagged his tail when Lochan sat next to him, and he placed his paw on the boy’s arm when he cuddled him.
He needed to tag someone he loved and cared about, right, and as he was drifting ever closer to sleep, he simply muttered to the Saint Bernard,
“ Tag, you’re it. “
this made me laugh so much, omg
