one thing I wish they had been able to put in the movie is grace being an insomniac king. this guy literally stayed up for days and then passed out mid-thought while on his way to his bedroom. rocky assigns himself the role of grace's personal sleep reminder because grace will NOT go to sleep on a normal schedule.

It's still so insane to me that Lars and the real girl is labeled as a comedy.
The movie is so.... it's so sincere? So sweet and loving in the most painful way? It's heartbreaking and heartwarming and it's labeled as a comedy?
I'm still not sure what's really supposed to be comedic about the movie. It's a movie about someone struggling with anxiety and connecting to other people. It's about someone struggling to deal with what happened in their childhood. And it's about people loving this struggling person so so so much, about people not understanding but willing to learn and change and do what's needed.
The movie deals with social anxiety, loneliness, delusions, unresolved trauma, touch aversion and so many other small things. It's so well done and so thoughtful for the fact that it was made in 2007
Like it's such a beautiful movie! And it's labeled as a comedy! Sure there's comedic moments- the bit where Lars throws the flower at the start of the movie is hilarious- but like... those moments are few and far between.
grace quietly typing “brave” into rocky’s computer while not being able to say it about himself because rocky deserves access to the language he needs to express his feelings is everything to me. he knows he wasn’t brave enough to choose this, but he’s learning how to be, and rocky sees it in him without even trying.

"the most unrealistic thing about project hail mary is that a woman is in charge" WRONG look up the glass cliff. women are much more likely to be promoted to positions of power when things are going poorly and people need a woman to blame. she refers to herself as the "world's whipping boy." the person put in the position to have to commit ecological and humanitarian crimes of that scale in order to save the earth would only ever be a woman.

Also, it's abundantly clear to me - at least in the film- she will miss him! They are friends by the end of this. That's half the tradgedy of it.

the thing too is that. I've heard, when the book came out, the big twist was the alien. right? because it was from the guy that wrote the martian, a notoriously hard sci fi book, so this was just another notoriously hard sci fi book and oh my god what the fuck there's ALIENS in here?!
but to me, who decided to watch the movie 1) because it was getting stellar reviews, and 2) Because There Was An Alien, the twist for me was that grace didn't want to be there. the big twist of the film was that grace was a coward and was forced onto this mission against his will. not to mention the taumoeba leak, but. that was it. that was the thing that had be gasping in the theater. the big surprise. not that aliens were involved in a hard sci fi product, but that the main character, the guy we were rooting for, the man whose perspective we had been in for hours, was drugged and shot into space on a suicide mission to save the fucking planet and he didn't want to go. he ran. and to learn later on that in the book, he was given amnesia on purpose? because he threatened, Bluffed, that he would sabotage the mission once he woke up? I mean. when will we ever get a protagonist like ryland grace in a blockbuster movie again.
