Calling All #Instagrammers ! We want to showcase your beautiful images!

Driven by the vision of sparkling rivers with landscaped banks, kayakers paddling leisurely in the streams with clean waterways flowing into the picturesque lakes, Singapore has undertaken the challenging transformation into a City of Gardens and Water.

  Over the years, Singapore has gradually developed a pervasive network of about 8,000km of waterways and 17 reservoirs for our water supply. To realise the full potential of this water infrastructure, PUB has launched the Active, Beautiful, Clean Waters (ABC Waters) Programme in 2006. It is a strategic initiative to improve the quality of water and life by harnessing the full potential of our waterbodies.

  By integrating the drains, canals and reservoirs with the surrounding environment in a holistic way, the ABC Waters Programme aims to create beautiful and clean streams, rivers, and lakes with postcard-pretty community spaces for all to enjoy.

  We are looking for 12 photographs/illustrations of our ABC Waters sites to be used for @PUBsingapore ‘s year end collaterals. If you have that special image and would like it to be showcased, post it up on Instagram and tag #ABCWaters. Hurry! This open call ends at 2359hrs, 5 December 2014.

  Images will be chosen by @PUBsingapore & @NuffNang and acknowledgement will be credited to the 12 Instagrammers whose images are selected.

Weekly Instagram Challenge Update (Week 3)

The floodgates have opened!

We’re in the third week of PUB’s Weekly Instagram Challenge and we have a whopping 23 water droplet entries submitted so far.

Remember, this week’s prize is A BIG ONE. What is it?

A one night Deluxe Room stay in Siloso Beach Resort, Sentosa!

binz82 is getting her balance on with her water droplet Yin and Yang! I’m no art connoisseur but this sketch is incredible! I really love how the water droplets are seamlessly infused with the Yin Yang.

    Rock chick cherrlized’s bringing the house down with this colourful assortment of guitar pics! I’m a guitarist myself but, I don’t have that many guitar picks with me! Now I know who to go to when I run out hehehe. Rock on cherrylized!

  Check out this super cute layered cut out by evelyn1283! It kinda looks like an avocado but I like avocados!

    We have a lot of artwork entries this week. Felicialjm’s entry is nice, clean and simple. I think it can be made into a really cool logo for a water themed super hero!

  gracegrassgruss is taking her grass obsession to another level with this green coloured entry. This painting/drawing (sorry I’m no art major!) is so lifelike that I initially thought it was a close up photograph of water droplets on a leaf!

    Hahaha this is a clever one by hujiatao but Water Wally might not be so happy that you cut off his legs!

What a nice and clean shading of a water droplet by jolinsim123095 though what are those thingies surrounding it?

  I have no idea what this is though it kind of looks like either a drawing or a pillow cover (but why would someone place pencils on top of a pillow cover?). I’ll go with a drawing then! If it is really a drawing then…WHOA!

  Oishi! Check out this intricate drawing by niinnaa_oishi_! How oh how can someone fit all those designs into a small droplet like that? Definitely not me! Domo arigato niinnaa roboto!

  At first, I couldn’t get why scrayla uploded this. Where’s the water droplet!?!? But then I saw it! It’s the white (yellow?) rose guys! Nicely spotted by scrayla.

  Yes that’s absolutely correct whitetigress. Water is as precious, if not more, than diamonds! Though I don’t think you’d be too happy to get a water-ring for your wedding would you? Hahaha.

  The awesome thing about a water droplet is the many other shapes that you can make with it just like this entry by wish4ver!

Instagram Competition Challenge Week 2 Winners!

HOHOHO. We’re now into the third week of PUB’s Weekly Instagram Challenge. So who won last week’s challenge?

I daresay that the entries are getting better and better each week! Check them winners out!

First up is this cute little Charmander looking dragon giving us some awesome water advice. Congratulations ryumage!

Next is this gathering of super cute soft toys by leepeici! I’m honestly amazed at the number of soft toys that leepeici has. Where do you keep them?

Lastly, and my favourite by far, is this collage by dainty_bs. So much effort and creativity! And guys, just like dainty_bs, you can upload as many water droplets as you want. But remember, it has to be cool, funky, creative or mind-blowing!

Say what?! Say WHAT!?

Oh come on. First it was Water Wally soft toys.

Now the winner gets a one night stay in Siloso Beach Resort’s DELUXE ROOM?!

That’s like, a whole new level man.

What am I ranting about? The PUB’s Weekly Instagram Challenge of course.

In this simple challenge, one just has to follow three simple steps to stand a chance to win this awesome prize.

It’s so simple!

First, follow PUBsingapore on Instagram. (For the ones without an Instagram account…GO GET ONE!)

Then, make water droplets out of anything that comes to mind. (I tried stretching and bending myself into a water droplet but let’s just say that didn’t work out so well.)

Finally, grab your smartphone, snap a photo and upload it with the #sgWorldWaterDay hashtag!

But what’s with all the talk about a free vacation?

Well, starting from this week, the winner will receive a free night’s stay at Sentosa’s Siloso Beach Resort. In a Deluxe Room ya’ll!

But wait! Unless you have an already packed holiday suitcase lying about, don’t start packing yet.

The prize is valid for only three months starting from 30th March 2014 and…they aren’t redeemable on Fridays, weekends, public holidays and some “black-out” dates…whatever that means.

Weekly Instagram Challenge Update (Week 2)

The 2nd week of PUB’s Instagram Challenge is closed guys! We’re now in intense deliberation and discussion to pick out this week’s three lucky winners.

But first thing’s first, let’s see what the many creative minds of Singapore have put up for us this week…

Nat_kismetian (or should I say NUT_kismetian hahaha) went nuts over an almond water droplet. Look! It even got a thumb up from a doodle Water Wally. Nuts!...I mean…Nice!

Whoa! Just look at this entry from leepeici. This is probably the fluffiest water droplet I’ve seen so far. Good job leepeici!

Is that JAMES from the Thomas the Tank Engine series? Oh this brings me back to the good old days where my biggest worry would only be an uncompleted toy railway track and missing batteries from my toy trains. Very creative entry here from kaiyuantay though I think James would derail at the top of the droplet due to the broken track (just like in the book)! Nonetheless, kudos to you kaiyuantay!

And from the land of the dinosaurs…the Graciesaurus has gathered together rocks from its habitat and shaped it into a water droplet in its nest. This rare phenomenon happens only once in every…well it’s the first time!

This entry by hishinobi reminds me of a pear because of its spots. Though I’d be hard pressed to find a blue pear!

An exciting assortment of sugar, spice and everything nice by dainty_bs. Extra points for you if those doughnuts are real!

That’s such a cute dragon ryumage! It looks a little like a Charmander with wings (cos Charizard is definitely not cute). Well how about you help us save water by NOT breathing fire on anything oh mister dragon!

SPLASH!er wat3rboii was left mortified after seeing his family members wash the dishes under running water.

Waterboi said that they will usually leave the tap running while they scrub the dishes, essentially just wasting water.

He feels that he needs to do more to advise and educate his family on ways to save water, especially since the current dry spell that has hit the country.

Weekly Instagram Challenge Winners (Week 1)

We have our winners!

It has been a great start to the PUB’s Weekly Instagram Challenge and after going through more than 15 entries…we have found our three winners!

First up is pearlyntan91 with her very unique arrangement of sample tubes (YES! I REMEMBER WHAT THOSE ARE). Was this done during lab? =P

Next is apai_n_nana with this very interesting combination of rice and something-which-to-this-day-I-still-can’t-figure-out. Is that chapatti? Or bread? Or some kind of paste?

Do people really eat that?

And finally it’s angkeelee with her assortment (with the help of her friends…or are all of those hands hers?!?!) of literally handmade water droplets! It’s a droplet party ya’ll! Drink included.

And the PUB’s Weekly Instagram Challenge is a go!

Have not heard of it? Well, anyone in Singapore who has an Instagram account can join in.

It’s really easy! Just follow the three simple steps and let your creativity take over.

You can make water droplets out of anything that you can find. Draw, design, paint, colour, spray, arrange, build and more! Make it creative, wacky or outrageous! No holds barred!

Too Much or Too Little

What I find so amazing about Singapore is the fact that an island with limited land to collect or store rainwater has managed to overcome its limitations and develop a sustainable supply of water for its people. Through research and innovation, this nation has managed to build a robust and diversified supply of water known as the “Four National Taps” which comprises of local catchment water, imported water, NEWater and desalinated water.

But what I find truly truly truly remarkable is the way Singapore has allowed people to be closer to this precious resource through its ABC Waters Programme, while maintaining the integrity and consistency of its water supply. For example, we can now rent a kayak at MacRitchie Reservoir and paddle along the reservoir banks, or try our luck at the designated fishing area, without worrying that such activities will have an impact on our drinking water.

Kenya...Pass the Water Please?

What if you wake up one day to discover that there is a crazy huge swimming pool buried deep beneath your house/HDB block? No? Never?

Well not for the Kenyans! Though I don’t think they have HDB Blocks around there.

But back in September last year the Kenyan authorities discovered two huge aquifers, or in normal people’s words, ground water bodies, located deep underground.

It’s 2014! That means we are all obliged to set our resolutions yet again, and of course, one of mine has to be about water!

This year, I want to do more to conserve our most beautiful resource. Today, the average Singaporean uses 152 litres of water daily. That’s a whole lot of water, and there’s much more we can do to ensure that no water gets wasted unnecessarily, and hopefully, by 2020, Singaporeans would use less than 147 litres of water every day. The difference of eight litres may seem small, but multiply that by 365 days a year and more than five million people on our island, and the difference would be mind-boggling.

Water for a Good Cause

Have you ever been to a restaurant, and they force you to pay for a glass of iced water? I know, when you order a meal that costs 20 bucks, footing for a glass of water that costs 30 miserable cents shouldn’t be a problem. Yet, I still despise it when restaurants charge for it. Go ahead, call me cheap all you want.

One place that I would be willing to pay for water though, is Food For Thought (FFT). FFT is a local social enterprise start-up with a focus on helping the less fortunate. One of their causes is to give clean water to those in poverty-stricken countries. According to them, bathtubs use more than 15% of the world’s water, which is truly a massive waste of precious water, especially when you think of the millions out there who may not even get a glass of clean, drinking water every day.

Daily Dose of Coffee or Fruit Juice?

The world drinks around 1400 million cups of coffee daily! It’s the second most popular drink, right after water and I’m sure it’s almost a routine for all of us to start the day with a cup of this “controversial” beverage. Yes, controversial is the word I am using here.

Did it ever cross your mind that Coffee Is Actually A Fruit! Don’t doubt me, I’ve did a Google check to make sure my daily intake is actually “FRUIT JUICE”. Coffee beans are called ‘beans’ because of their resemblance to beans. Actually they are edible pits of berries growing on a tree or rather a coffee plant. This is also why the Brazilian acai berry shares so many properties with the coffee ‘bean’.

Opae Ula – One of Nature’s Most Amazing Creatures

Have you ever heard of an amazing creature that can live in both fresh water and saltwater? The Opae Ula, which means red shrimp in Hawaiian, is a small red shrimp of the family Atyidae. It is one of the most amazing creatures on our planet as though being small in size, rarely longer than 1.5cm; it is a shrimp of the extremes.
