Expect more thorough posts!

I apologize for my inactivity--I created this blog wanting to learn more about lesser known artists, and I still want to do that.  This blog won’t be one of those that just reblogs likable artwork with nothing else.

I want to interpret pieces and artists, do interviews, and give various artists a chance to get a little more recognition for their work.

If you want to see a bunch of that cool kind of stuff, go ahead and follow me, and even reblog this!  It’d help me out a bunch, as well as the artists I post about.

@velajess  He’s not a pedophile.  He made a terrible and stupid mistake, yes.  It was highly inappropriate and a disturbing action.  I don’t condone what Yuta did.

That said, a pedophile is a person who is sexually attracted to children--if he says he isn’t one, I believe him.  In the process of believing he’s not a pedophile, I’m not invalidating the weight and rightful controversy of what he did.  But he is not a pedophile.  There is a difference between being aware of the choices he made and accusing him of something he insists is not true.

And for anyone reading this, I will not be taking down my interview with Yuta for the sole fact that he is handling this situation in what I think is the most responsible way he possibly can.  He’s admitting to his mistakes and not trying to fabricate any excuses.  He’s obeyed others and now has an 18+/NSFW warning on his blog.  He’s offered money back to people who have bought his hoodies (possibly other merch, I’m not entirely sure).  Not for a moment has he denied that what he did was bad.  He pretty much agrees with people who say what he did was unacceptable and unforgivable.  He is seriously handling it in every non-excusing way he can.

Lash out at me all you want for this, but I do not think Yuta Sakakibara is inherently a bad person.  I think this was a stupid and awful move on his end, and I was disturbed when I found out about it.  But I’ve forgiven him for it because of the actions he’s taking.  I’m still following him.  I still admire his artwork.  I still respect him as an artist.  Time will tell whether or not he deserves it, but until then I am going to continue to put my faith in him because he’s a human being just like all of us, and I am not going to vilify him or push a terrible label like “pedophile” on him because he made a mistake.

I’m not defending his actions, nor will I ever.  They were, indeed, unacceptable.  But he’s fixing his behavior and showing that he cares enough about his art and his fanbase to change that behavior and become a better person.  I refuse to paint him as “evil.”  He isn’t.

And, one more time for you: no, he’s not a pedophile.

probably my favorite Yue Minjun; its dynamic composition effortlessly combines absurdity with simplicity: it has just the right proportion of vivid color to neutral hues; first you are drawn into the central focus point, that clown grin from where your gaze moves upwards into the clouds and then falls slowly down towards the vanishing point, your eye coming to rest on a pink foot framed by thickly contoured shadow. steeped in surrealist motifs such as the Magritte-like cloudscape and decapitated lunatic, holding his own head with a farcical, deranged, yet amusing (and infectious) smile.

Mattie Stillwell

Mattie Stillwell is an artist I came across on DeviantART.  Her artwork is a mix of beautiful and creepy.  Stillwell is especially stands out in color choice and making clever use of brush strokes.

The first piece I saw of Stillwell’s was a part of her monster series (in which the above painting, Cyborga Brought Me Flowers, is included).  Cyborga wasn’t the first one I saw specifically.  The first one was Green Shtriga:

Green Shtriga caught my attention mainly because of the brush strokes.  As I mentioned, Stillwell is smart with her use of the brush.  This monster is crude and nasty.  The painting wouldn’t have that effect nearly as strongly if it were painted cleanly.  If you notice, the strokes are instead sloppy, harsh, and quick to make the creature seem more beastly.  It’s reminiscent of De Kooning’s Woman, I.  

Green Shtriga isn’t the only painting of Stillwell’s that shows this skill.  She has a few paintings that illustrate the power of the brush, and how it can imply movement or even evoke specific feelings:

On top of the strokes, take a good look at choice in color.  They’re used in a smart way to make the pieces pop.  In Rabbit Chaser, a triad color scheme is used to immediately make the painting interesting.  And in Exchange, majority of the painting is dark with the exception of the focal point, the cat.

Mattie Stillwell, as you can see, is incredibly talented an her artwork possesses interesting subject matter.  I highly recommend taking the time to check out the rest of her art.

YouTube Short Films - Jacinta Cortometraje

Jacinta Cortometraje (I’m assuming that’s the official name of the film and not just Spanish for “short film?” Whatever, I’m just going with the title) is the first short film for this little series of posts I’m going to do where I post about short films I find and like on YouTube.

Anyway, this short film is cute, but it’s also kinda somber.  I know it’s kinda long (9 minutes), but it’s pretty damn attention grabbing, and the style of the people are unique--they look almost bug-like.

I don’t have much of an interpretation for this one.  I almost got the vibe that the old woman was kind of a shut-in and essentially wasted herself away doing so?  Maybe that’s just the view of an extrovert, though.  Feel free to give your own input! ☺

Interview with Yuta Sakakibara

One of my absolute FAVORITE artists on Tumblr is Yuta Sakakibara, known as the creator of Barf Farm Cult.  I have been following Yuta since I first came on tumblr, and I’ve been in love ever since.  I asked if I’d be able to ask him a few questions for this blog, and he was sweet enough to say yes!  Sorry in advance if my questions aren’t all that interesting--I’m still getting the hang of this.

When did you first start your blog/barf farm cult?

☆ i started my blog 6~7 years ago, i just posted some random shit with japanese sentences . i don't remember when it became barf farm cult, and i don't remember when clitori spears came in my mind but i think that was when barf farm cult started.

Were you ever nervous about what others would think of your art?

☆ yes. i was so nervous when i got a lot of hate massage. i'm weak ass bastard so i can't think " i don't care what people think" but i can't stop doing my thing, eww i want to be strong.

What made you think of Clitori Spears?

☆ i don't remember. she was one of the characters. but she got her own name and personality and became the leading role of barf farm cult. i still don't know why. she is me but she is not me mmm i can't explain my feeling for her.

Do you plan on making any other human characters for your art?

☆ no . i hate human race.

What inspires you?

☆ music!! 80s san francisco punk rock inspires me mostly. fang, fuck ups, flipper, bad posture,tales of terror,  i love their "hahaha fuck you all" attitude. and i love eminem!! his album "relapse" is my favorite thing in this world. evil but funny, aww i listen to it every day, it makes me want to draw!! and the relationships between me and the people inspire me. i'm the full time loser.

Do any of the animals in your work have names?

☆ no!! because there are too many animals in barf farm♡

Do you ever experiment with different styles?

☆ yes but i failed, i thought "eww this is not me eww eww eww!!"

Would you ever collab with another artist?

☆ i don't know how to collab with another artist but i want to try it.

Lastly, do you have a special name for your fans? (Ex: how lady Gaga calls her fans little monsters)

☆ no, they already have their own beautiful name, i want to call their name when i talk to them♡

Yuta is a super super super sweet creature and to anyone who hasn’t taken a look at his artwork, do it!  It’s vulgar and beautiful.

Saccstry

Saccstry is a creepycute-esque artist who is inspired by blood/gore and space.

Saccstry’s work is soft and bright.  One of the most notable aspects of her work are the eyes she draws--they’re hypnotizing, and full of life.  She also uses gems in much of her work, typically pasting them on the faces of her figures.  Her mixture of space and creepy are beautifully incorporated, and it makes her work breathtaking.

Saccstry also has some familiar characters in her work, including (but not limited to) Anna from Frozen, Alice (and a human, genderbent version of the white rabbit) from Alice in Wonderland, and Raggedy Ann.

Risa Mehmet

Revenge (Risa Mehmet, 2014)

Risa Mehmet is an artist who works and lives in Japan.  Her work is a unique mix of melancholic and precious.  She states on her Facebook page that her work is inspired by “[her] sadness and some traumatic experiences.”

Mehmet’s work typically possesses dulled, pastel colors.  The figures are adorned with expressionless faces and deep, vacant eyes.  Recently (starting around 2015), her work has incorporated darker color schemes, as well as more grotesque scenes.  It is also noticed that Mehmet’s work has also began to take place more often outdoors, seemingly in nighttime scenes.

There are a few interesting patterns in her work such as animals with human faces (usually deer, rabbits, and the like), bandaged heads (in more recent work), trees with bare branches (also in recent work), and holes in the hands of the figures.  Most of her figures are also female.
