Ive often found myself numb within the 24 hour news cycle. Between the nature of my job(s) and this damn phone, I've learned to tune it out. Every so often something will slide across desk - something not too far from the day to day, something I've seen in true crime or on SVU, something vile and disgusting and indicative of where we're headed as a society - and it'll make me stop. Remember that these are real people in real life situations. That there are families and lovers and friends and memories and smells and laughs tied up in these people. Remember that if I took a couple steps to the left or went right and bumped into this guy, this could've been me.

Breonna Taylor. Gabby Petito. Asha Degree.

All could've been me.

And now? Dr. Cerina Fairfax.

I saw the posts. I saw the hashtag discourse. I saw it all before I ever I saw a photo of her face. I saw the discussions around Black men's mental health before I saw a RIP post for her. I seen fraternity members scrambling, I saw the arguments, I saw photos of them as a happy family and him by himself before I saw a fucking rest in peace Cerina post.

I'm disgusted this is even a discussion. I'm beyond myself at this point. How many women this week were killed by their spouse? How many more were absolved of their crimes? How many women forgotten?

How many more times am I supposed to just.. go to work and continue grocery shopping after I read that a child found his mother murdered?

Help me understand.

I get trying to keep the magic alive. I even kind of understand the capitalistic/elitist perspective of wanting to keep the experience exclusive ... to an extent. However, I'll never fully get behind artist fully gate keeping their work. Prince not enjoying sampling is one thing, but not allowing your music in guitar hero? A game that would've introduced so many kids to your music AND sparked their interest in learning guitar? All because "I think you should pick up an actual guitar" ??? Huh.

Or even Beyoncé not releasing the Formation World Tour DVD... or really anything media/visual related for the past 10 years. Like the Renaissance film was cool but it had a limited theatre run and it's no where (officially) online to stream. Love her down but cmon sistren.
