I started my story on Tapas! Due to my health and work, it's just a novel for now but I'd appreciate any attention/comments/thoughts on it!

Hey I just wanted to atop by and say that ever since I started reading obsidian (and ever since it's been on a hiatus) I stop by once a month to see if there are any new information about it's status and about hoe your doing. I read in the last question u got that ur struggling with some health conditions that make it impossible for you to continue with the story and I am sorry to hear that you have to struggle like that :c I hope that you'll be better soon. Because when ever you're ready to continue with Obsidian I'll be here šš All the best and warm thoughts to you, you amazing, talented personš
Thank you! To be honest its almost more mental than physical. I found out that I have a spine disease (on both my mothers side and fathers side) that usually only appears in old people but both my mom and Grandmother unlocked it early like some secret gamer achievement when they were pregnant in their twenties. I am in my twenties but im not pregnant, and yet I too got the gamer award for fucked spine.
Fortunately for me, its something manageable. Its a pain I can deal with with physical therapy even if it'll never go away. Ive shrunk 3 inches in 4 years because of it.
The unfortunate thing is having to come to terms with the fact that now I am 'broken'. and like, I know I'm not broken in a rational sense; disabled people are people still. The fact remains, though, that for the rest of my life all the people around me are going to be conscious of how I can barely stand for more than an hour or that I cant bend over to feed my dogs and whoever I'm with will have to essentially sign up as a caretaker. Theyre going to not invite me to things or change plans, theyre going to get frustrated with my very existence and its hard to not think about that.
Its dampened my mood for writing that's for sure.
Right now its a matter of judging how much energy and pain im in and balancing it against what I want to do, which, recently, has been Original work. Because im tired and I want to be kind to myself. Hopefully I can make something of that. I really appreciate that you enjoy the fic so much though! It has a special place in my heart even though I know I can do better. And it means a lot to me that you went out of your way to tell me this.
I wanted to stop by and say that your fic, Obsidian, is beautiful and has some of the best world building! It was incredibly inspiring to read and I was super caught up in the characters and characterization. The art you did to accompany it was especially wonderful. You have some amazing talent!
Thank you! I really wish I could continue it, but due to some health concerns right now I'm unable to continue it :(

Hi! I have a translation question: what do you mean when you say that if there is a recognizable style, the translator isn't doing their job properly? I know little about translation so I'm just very curious (btw, I agree with your take on mha's official translations).
translators are supposed to be invisible. when youāre translating or adapting a text from a source language into a target language, you need to alter the text as little as possible while still trying to keep true to the meaning / message (or style if youāre translating writing). Caleb not only takes many liberties with the source material (the most obvious one being the āchicken soup for the soulā localization he did in chapter 290 without a real need for it, but in general he tends to embellish things to sound as smart as possible whenever possible), but he also injects his own biases in the translation, like when he purposefully softens the heroesā harshest lines and instead makes the villains sound more evil
Compare the two versions:
the meaningās the same, the nuance is different. The fantranslation makes it very easy to see the flaw in Jeanistās reasoning and recognize that heās wrong in not seeing Dabiās victimhood, because thereās a stress on his concern for discretion. He sounds selfish and casual, just how someone whoās brushing off child abuse should sound like. The official translation not only sounds way more demonizing of Dabiās actions, putting emphasis on how unjustified Dabiās claims supposedly are, but he also calls him a fiend. If you check the raws here he calls him ā č¼ęÆćā which just meansĀ ādamned Dabiā. Itās a simple imprecation that Caleb took as an opportunity to slip in his bias. Nowhere on the text is there a mention of Jeanist calling him a fiend.
Ah, by the way. Iām stating this before someone accuses me of reading too much into it. Iām not making up the fact that Caleb is unsympathetic towards the villains. He freely admitted it himself on more than one occasion.
Just two I can think of off the top of my head. Iām sure thereās more. I stopped reading this ānotesā when it became clear that he justified a military state that uses child soldiers to kill abuse victims.
Now, I definitely understand not being as incensed as I am about this. For me, this kind of behaviour is unjustified both because heās the official voice for bnha for the whole western fandom, and as such his opinions are regarded as absolutes, and also because I have a degree in languages & translation and I notice these things and they upset me because thatās my dream job right there, and heās doing it wrong.
Iām not saying anyone should agree with me, but regardless of my feelings on his ability to translate, itās still pretty shitty of him to make his bias so obvious. Translations aside, heās demonizing abuse survivors and heās doing it as someone who has authority in the fandom (as was just confirmed by the anon coming here like a white knight to defend his honor)
hey! thank you for your additions. I mightāve picked a bad example and for that I apologize (again, Iām not fluent enough in japanese and my inexperience just showed), but this is exactly the point I was trying to prove. When I said that he makes the villains sound more evil, I meant stuff like making Dabi sound more callous by altering the nuance of his speech patterns. Thatās translator bias. It shouldnāt be there. Iām not saying he does it consciously or maliciously, but itās a sign that he lacks the professionalism required by his job.
