well, considering that child mortality back in the sixties and seventies was triple of what it is now, some of you didn't.

A conversation I had with an old man at the historic society once about this very subject had him telling me a story about how when he was a kid back in the 1940s, they didn't have all these safety laws and rules. So he and his brother and their friends were hopping fences, as boys do.

At least until his brother hopped a fence and went face first into a vat of boiling lye. Because you could just boil lye in your backyard back then too. "It took my brother a week to die."

He summed up the story as that a LOT of kids didn't make it back then, but human nature being what it is tends to kind of leave that out. But there were a lot of accidents, and he said that on the balance he's okay with a few more rules if it means less small caskets.

I think about the old man and his story whenever I hear folks talking out of their ass about how they did just fine. You didn't do just fine. You got lucky, and not everyone did. So wear your fucking helmets and stop playing with the bottle rockets.
