Italians are the most numerous forigners living in Barcelona. The cost of the statue was paid by Italian residents to Barcelona. Per this link https://monuments.iec.cat/fitxa.asp?id=608

So probably to have a figure that was a celebration of being italian. I also found several articles citing this title of Dante's influences on Spanish literature.
