talked about whump in my senior thesis
I'm back in the fucking building again so here's a small list of warnings a bound and gagged whumpee would do to warn their rescuers of a trap:
Frantic head shaking
Eyes darting towards the threat. Subtle but great
Screaming out through their gag. Of course, unless the gag is loose or ineffective, the rescuers won't understand them
Thrashing against their bonds. Especially if the rescuer is trying to untie them!
In a call, Whumpee would act out of character, or say a code word that only the rescuer knows, or similar, to warn them that it was a trap.
Knocking something over.
Hurting or even killing themself, The Highwayman style if you like
Telepathy. Too easy IMO though
(Feel free to add anything else!)
What about just staying completely still and silent…like just unsettlemaxxing so rescuers realize something is wrong based purely on vibes
Or that same silence stemming from utter shock at the realization that they’ve just doomed their rescuers to the same fate…speechlessness and incomprehensible guilt
given the current climate this pride especially i feel i must mention that i love my trans friends, i stand with trans people in the fight against transphobic legislation and those who would enforce it, and this blog is not a good place for you to be if you do not vibe with that
post-whump whump
yeah seeing the injuring is fun but the aftermath can be just as good...
character(s) racing through a building—prison, stronghold, base, hospital, etc.—in the hopes that behind one of the hundreds of doors lining the long, dark hallways is their captured companion...
without the knowledge that their friend is even alive, even within the limits of successful rescue, run render themselves ragged and their arms numb by tearing open each and every door.
perhaps there's a time constraint...only a few minutes until the guards see through the diversion they'd created, or a fire has started somewhere in the bowels of the building. either way, they have to find their taken friend, and soon.
finally one of the group mates shouts, their frantic call echoing down the halls. their missing companion has been found. the squad convalesces to find the crumpled body they'd come for.
bloodied, beaten, and barely conscious, their friend isn't able to register exactly who it is that's touching them, running shaking fingers along the underside of their neck. they think it's the one who put them in this state. the only face they can see is of their cruel, relentless assailant.
taken companion begins to scream, to fight back with what little strength they can muster—perhaps injuring one of their rescuers in the process...they bite or kick or punch or choke someone they love dearly.
eventually another party member knocks them out with a hit to the head and the the group moves out. but the weight of their unconscious companion takes its toll and escape will prove to be much more difficult than they'd thought...

Hi I saw you mention musical theater whump and I'd like to suggest you maybe watch the things from the Hatchetfield universe if you have not. There's 3 horror comedy musicals, and shorter stories the cast filmed during covid (those started as like 30 minutes reading from a script thing and then got bigger and bigger). Each takes place in the town of Hatchetfield, where things are a bit... Off. Each musical is a different universe set in the same town, though usually with reoccurring characters. (The second season of the short stories, Nightmare Time, I think takes place all in the same universe, but otherwise it's different). All are on YouTube for free.
So just. Some teasers:
The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals: town being taken over by singing body snatching aliens. Main character hates musicals passionately. We got people being threatened, possessed, seeing their loved ones' bodies being puppeted around, some betrayal, characters getting knocked out. This is the only one where the characters acknowledge the singing. "Let It Out" my beloved.
Black Friday: there's a cool new toy! And people will do anything to get one today in the store! Including murder!! There's stabbing, fights, people getting chocked, a really cool near death song, people acting not like themselves when they are near this doll, and more!
Nerdy Prudes Must Die: highschool seniors decide to prank the school bully by luring him to a supposedly haunted house. School bully accidentally dies. School bully comes back as a ghost and wants to kill everyone. So there's death, hopeless running from death... Look just, look up the title song. Watch Jon Matteson fall on the ground and plead for his life. Good stuff. There's more!
A non Hatchetfield musical I would also recommend is Cinderella's Castle, a much more grim, revenge story retelling of Cinderella but I'm getting tired of typing and don't want to explain all of that. It's also for free on YouTube. There's dismemberment!
oh em gee I'm sorry it took me so long to see this! thanks so much! some real good stuff here ☝️
[desperately horny voice] haha yeah did you know that studies have shown that vocal expressions of pain actually increase your pain tolerance? yeah, even if it's volitional, you should really be making lots of loud noises while you're in pain. please. if you want we can even practice right now.
Have you ever stopped reading a whump story because you didn’t like a character’s name?
No
No (lying)
Yes
Yes but ONLY if it’s my name/a family member’s name/etc
I haven’t yet but I WOULD skip a story if I didn’t like a main character’s name
yes the main couple had the exact names of my mom and her high school boyfriend i could not stomach it i fear
Look. Sometimes you've just got to tie up that protagonist, okay? Factually. It needs to happen. For character reasons. Let's watch how they squirm trying to escape. How their mind works when they can't rely on their body. Do they panic? do they charm? Do they go still? Is it an absolute breeze for them to escape, barely a hindrance? Or are they well and truly contained? How does their face change when they realize that? Does their stoic nature wash away? Turn to pleas and panic, knowing they can't help those they care about? Or do they turn animalistic, growling and snarling and wrenching at their restraints? Shouting threats, fighting with their words? Do they realize they may hurt themself in their struggles and stop or do they not care about that? What happens when you add a gag into the situation? Muffle their cries and threats into incoherent babble. Do they still try to speak or do they get quiet? Study how their mind works in such a situation and learn about them. ...and appreciate the squirming and noises that they make, along the way.
well yes!!
i’m making a master list of my favorite whump! how should i sort it?
by medium (tv, movie, game, etc.)
by whump type (physical, emotional, both, etc.)
by trope/ailment (fever, poison, stab wound, emeto, etc.)
