i get that miles being sheltered to punk culture/ideas is an easy assumption, considering his parents' attitude towards gwen, but like. i really really want to pose to you all miles morales the graffiti artist, who's incredibly aware that his dad wouldn't defend him if he was arrested, but still believes in and makes public art. miles morales the black scholarship kid at a predominantly white school that treats him in equal turns like a snowflake, a loose cannon and a charity case, who in one of the novels gets suspended for calling out & starting a protest against his racist history teacher. miles morales who in that same novel gave his own cash to a pickpocket he had to stop after giving him a chance to surrender. miles morales who keeps getting told to shut up & back down but doesn't, even if it's "for his own good". miles morales who after being told he'd never fit into a system that should've helped him said "then fuck your system" and electrocuted the leader.
miles morales might not be punk aesthetically, but he gets it. he gets it more than a lot of so-called "punks" do.
as a person of color it’s so important to me that miles looked at hobie—rule-breaking, conflict-provoking, dark-humored hobie—and couldn’t help but call him cool, that pavitr and gwen see him as a reliable dude when adults call him a “piece of work”. we see him just fuck around and cause trouble and joke about capitalism and silently advise miles to be skeptical about authority.
idk like its easy to have another charming (usually white) rebel without a cause who stirs the pot for shits and giggles with a smug grin on his face to match his devil may care attitude, that the kind and humble protag shrugs off in his quest to seek approval from authority. but then instead we get teens from marginalized identities looking up to a young black man who challenges them to think about their actions carefully and question what they know, who jokes about things that other people would politely grimace at in response to, who makes adults uncomfortable. i can think of some people in my life like him—those older kids whom i was told were troublemakers, whom adults told me to ignore, to be scared of, to reject, yet were the ones who gave me wisdom and whom i ended up looking up to and whom i bitched about colony and homophobia and fascism with.
and it isn’t just hobie and his throwaway lines barbed with criticism and discontent, it’s also when gwen says “can you stop being a cop for once”, it’s also when pavitr says “this is where the british stole all our stuff”, it’s that level of awareness of unfairness and injustice in the world they live in and as kids they just have to passively accept the status quo and kick the dirt and angstily, cynically point at injustice with a half-cocked smile of irony. of course young vigilantes would say shit like that. of course young vigilantes would have blm pins and trans lives matter flags and jokes about colony and capitalism. of course kids like me would understand that. of course kids like me would look at hobie and say he’s one cool fucking dude.

Miguel is a totally normal and well adjusted adult 🫶✨
Wait, wait, wait, hold on. There's an elite society with all the best Spider-people in it?
Reblogging again because I got an anon last week whining cause they did this to one of my unfinished series and the bot killed Y/N so now they want ME to give them a happy ending. Like. No. Suffer, bitch.
AI is the death of creativity. Anyone who does this to my stories and is stupid enough to brag about it will be blocked from ever reading my work again, AND I'll let everyone on tumblr know that you do this. We'll see how much fic you get to enjoy when every author blocks you forever.
Fic is a gift. I've said it before. Don't shit all over your lovingly handcrafted gifts, m'kay? This should be fucking obvious, but apparently for some of you it's not.
THIS GOES FOR AI ART AS WELL.
I know this doesn’t really apply to my content because I make one off headcannons, but DO NOT PUT OTHER AUTHORS/ARTISTS WORKS INTO AI! If you do you’ll be blocked from my page. It’s incredibly disrespectful to the people who work so hard to make amazing content. Don’t do it.
the spider gang learning asl to communicate behind people’s backs (mainly miguel — they don’t know that he’s also fluent lmao)
Miguel chasing after Miles has the same energy as Warden Snyder chasing after Jack Kelly in the Newsies (1992 version) and I can’t get the image out of my mind
Rio and Jeff both have different and unique relationships with all of the arachkids that Miles brings home (or that just seem to spawn in their living room periodically lmao).
They both love Pav (who doesn’t?). Rio loves his more outgoing/goofy personality and how it brings it out in everyone around him (Jeff especially gets a bit goofy and it reminds her of when Miles was young and how they used to play and interact — it makes her heart melt). Jeff likes good vibes and the kid is full of them lol, easy banter, perfect ‘yes, and’ energy all around. They constantly ask how his girlfriend and family are doing. He brings them authentic chai (they’ve all dropped the ‘chai tea’ phrase) and brings Rio gifts almost every time he’s over as a thanks for letting him impose on their space (flowers, fabrics, jewelry, you name it. she loves and appreciates every thing he brings and is very touched at the thought despite telling him every time that it’s not necessary).
Neither had a great impression of Gwen at first, and it’s still a bit tentative but they can see how happy she makes Miles and how much she means to everyone in the group. Rio immediately notices how she shows her care and affection differently than anyone else — it’s in the details that she leaves behind. A sweater here, a drumstick there, as if to say ‘I know I’m universes away but I’m also still here and I’ll be back’. Jeff notices how the girl is always teasing but never too far, just enough to poke fun and more often put people at ease. She wants everyone to be comfortable and happy. She flits in and out sporadically but is always there when she’s needed. She is the biggest supporter of Miles’ creativity and somehow always knows when he’s close to burning himself out with schoolwork and makes a point to drag him out and let off some steam to get his mind to a better place. She’s getting better at the respect part, only slipping up on their names a few times and learning the etiquette rules. They both appreciate her efforts.
Margo is their favorite, hands down. She’s the perfect mix of respectful and witty. She keeps them all honest. She’s always the first to offer to help cook or set the table anytime she’s over for dinner. She helps Jeff with his tech problems and has long conversations with Rio in spanish (they have slightly different accents and dialect but they make it work). She is literally their ideal daughter in law (but would never push Miles away from who he wants, so they leave the matter be and just appreciate her as Miles’ friend).
Hobie is the most complicated out of the bunch. Rio sees him as someone in need of her mothering and is constantly trying to force food and comfort onto him. Every time he’s over she offers their house for the night so she can have peace of mind knowing that he’s safe (she had heard that he doesn’t have a stable living situation and has been Worried since). She knows he comes from a complicated world and wants to help the kid her son is so fond of. He is respectful and considerate, if a little bit tense whenever Jeff is around. Rio doesn’t mind his punk look or attitude, after all, she herself was a bit of an anarchist once upon a time and she just wants the best for him. Jeff likes Hobie. He really does. Even if they butt heads and have very different (and sometimes loud) opinions on certain topics. But at the end of the day he feels for the kid and wishes things were different in both of their worlds so Hobie wouldn’t have to feel so on edge around him. He knows they’re never going to be best buds or maybe even anything better than ‘slightly tense and awkward’ but he vows to at least do anything in his power to show the kid that there’s still good in the world(s).
Rio and Jeff are just glad that Miles has so many people in his life that love and support him <3
Me waiting for y'all to stop this shipping and age nonsense so we can start talking about Hobies very real trauma and how it effects him as a black man living under a police state
SAY IT LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK.
I was talking to a friend about the differences in the way Hobie and Noir are affected by their direct confrontation methods against fascism.
Noir is pretty melodramatic, he says he enjoys punching nazis but he also demonstrates guilt around the "moral ambiguity of his violent actions", on top of seeming generally depressed when you look too closely at him, what with the whole Burning Matches Down To His Fingertips Just To Feel Something.
Contrasted with Hobie who seems very playful about his politics, implying that his activism is performance art, literally took Spiderpunk to the runway, etc. If we take a step back and think about the larger implications of his universe, yes, he should be deeply traumatized and you'd think it would manifest in easily identifyable ways, but it doesn't.
I personally think Hobie's truama is manifesting in my favorite type of black resistance, which is literally just "existing and being happy in a world that wants you dead is a form of defiance." You're not gonna catch Hobie looking bogged down by the weight of fascism because he's dedicating his energy into living his best life out of SPITE. His anger goes into taking care of himself and his own because the number 1 thing fascists want from ppl like him is to roll over and die
just imagining miles with piercings hnhgghggg
