Replaying TLOU and I just noticed that Sarah gives Joel a birthday card with a dinosaur on it, saying “congratulations!”

which inside reads the message:

“You’re not a fossil! (Yet)

AND LATER, during ELLIES birthday, she calls him a dinosaur. How did I not notice this parallel before.

grace really has the best ending in all of fiction. human terrarium made especially to his tastes. can walk to work and does the job he loves. never needs to worry about bills or rent. meburgers. best friend visits every day. he's got the ideal life right there.

so grace is probably alarming to most eridians at first because he's a lanky wet alien with too few limbs, yes--but what if he ends up being terrifying in a sort of divine way instead of a repulsive one?

like. a creature that perceives the intangible? a creature that walks with thin permeable membranes bared to the air, whose blood contains elixir that can destroy pathogens without heat? a creature that is impossibly fragile yet resilient? a creature that breathes potently flammable gas to survive? a creature that is loud all over and speaks in a strange and frightening monotone, who thought it would die for you? who gave up its home in the heavens for you without meeting you first, whose first words to your people were probably something along the lines of We saved your star. It's gonna be okay. Don't be afraid.

Mr D but like. He's the demigod of the Olympians, y'know?

He has a default form that isn't carved and smoothed like a marble statue, instead littered with acne scars and crooked teeth and stretch marks and all other manner of "imperfections" gained throughout a human life.

He eats and drinks earthly food and drink, too sweet and too salty and too tender and too thick and too too too, instead of perfectly flavoured ambrosia and nectar that can't fill his hollow stomach even in their divinity.

He bolts up in the middle of the night, chest constricted and unneeded breaths short and eyes wet and mind and body so so small as he chases away the remnants of snarling monsters and the smell of blood.

He concentrates as much of his being in one place as he can, to fully enjoy the sunshine and the breeze and the life skimming over his skin, to truly take in the little things he had been so in awe of as a child.

Because like. He's a god, but he was a human first.
