Their moment was interrupted by Art who apologetically pulled Sarah away and just out of ear shot. While Cosima couldnât tell what he was saying, the angry look on Sarahâs face let her know that whatever it was the British teen wasnât happy about it.Â
âYou okay?â Cosima asked when Sarah eventually made her way back over to where she stood.
âWeâve gotta go,â Sarah all but growled, âPaparazzi found us,â her fists clenched together tightly and for a second Cosima was sure she was going to hit something.Â
âItâs fine,â Cosima tentatively reached for the other girlâs clenched fist, âWe can go.âÂ
Sarahâs whole body practically vibrated with anger and Cosima wished she could read what the other girl was thinking. The shop was obviously special to her and the fact that she had been discovered, that her private sanctuary had been invaded was obviously eating her up inside.Â
âSarah,â Art called from where he stood near the front door, âThis is our window, we need to go now if we have any chance of losing them.â
âFuck,â Sarah whispered, her eyes closing momentarily as she ran her free hand through her unruly hair. Her gaze was hard when they opened again and she nodded resolutely, pulling her hand from Cosimaâs grip.Â
âGive them nothing,â she said, âNo matter what they say or what they do just keep moving towards the car.â
âWhat do you mean?â Cosima asked as Sarah nudged her towards the front of the store, âWhat will they say?â
âYouâll go first,â Art told Cosima without giving Sarah a chance to answer, âThe car is waiting and then weâll follow.â
âSarah?â Cosima asked again, nerves suddenly hitting her at the brusque attitude of the bodyguard and his charge.
âItâll be fine,â Sarahâs eyes softened, âYouâll be fine, just, move quickly yeah and Iâll be right behind you.â
Opening the door was like stepping out into a wall of sound. Cameras clicked and photographers yelled, and Cosima felt like the world was closing in around her as she pushed her way towards the black SUV she could see waiting for them.Â
âGive us a smile, darling!â
âThis your latest conquest?â
âOver here, over here!â
âMove on quickly donât you!â
It was relentless and cruel and when Cosima finally made it into the cool interior of the SUV her heart was pounding in her chest. It was only when the door shut behind Sarah and Art clambered into the front seat that the sound eventually stopped. Beside her Sarahâs sunglasses hid her gaze but her mouth was drawn into a line line and her hands were again clenched into fists.Â
âIs it always like that?â Cosima asked as the SUV peeled away.
âYes,â Sarah sounded tired, her head dropping back against the seat, âAlways.â
âIâm going to take the long way back,â Art said from the front seat, âSee if we can lose them,â his eyes met Cosimaâs in the rearview mirror and the concern she saw there for the girl sitting next to her made Cosimaâs heart break.
For all the fame, the concerts, the adoration that Sarah and her siblings gained there was a dark side that not many people could understand but she was starting to. Sarahâs life was not her own. She was hunted like prey by people who would do and say anything if it meant they got a photo that would earn them thousands and they had just found one of the few places that Sarah had sought refuge in. A place where she could just be herself, a girl who loved music, and not the rockstar who was the property of millions.Â
Cosima wasnât sure what she could say to make the other girl feel better. When she was dropped off that evening she would go back to being Cosima Niehaus, college student. No one would hound her, no one wanted anything from her, she could just be.Â
With words failing her she reached slowly to place her hand over Sarahâs fist, her thumb running a soothing pattern over the other girlâs knuckles. The silence in the car was almost stifling but eventually Sarah flipped her hand over and allowed Cosimaâs fingers to slip between her own.Â
In the front of car Art muttered a curse from the driverâs seat as a car pulled up alongside them. Sarahâs body tensed but she didnât let go of Cosimaâs hand and suddenly Cosima knew that while she couldnât do anything about the circus outside she would try and do anything to remove the frown lines from between Sarahâs eyes. She searched her mind for something, anything that she could tell Sarah that would remove her from their current situation, a story that she could weave that would distract them from the vultures with cameras.
âHave I ever told you about the time I ended up with my hair getting eaten by a goat?â
