WHO WANTS THEIR GTV?

For some time, broadcasts of RAW and SmackDown! Have included a new feature. It’s known as GTV and its cameras have caught World Wrestling Federation Superstars in many predicaments.

What is GTV? From what we could uncover, GTV and its crew leave a video camera running in some of the oddest places, waiting to pick up any worthwhile information. In a sense GTV’s production format is similar to the hidden-camera coverage that has become the hallmark of such mainstream news programs as ABC’s 20/20 and Dateline NBC. GTV seems to be the eyes and ears of producers who want to know the real deal, and viewers who demand more from the Federation.

Since it crashed onto RAW’s airwaves last summer, GTV has been making big news in the Federation by recording footage of Superstars when they’re least aware of their surroundings. Sometimes the cameras roll after a Superstar’s match or before an upcoming appearance. After all, GTV isn’t like a regular WWFE telecast, where performers are told of camera positions and the camera operators before the night’s production. No, GTV is an entity unto itself.

GTV has added a new dimension to the cutting-edge transmissions of televised Federation events. However, it seems that some Federation Superstars have allegedly voiced concerns regarding the format of GTV. Do they feel GTV is too intrusive?

Take Val Venis, for example. During the height of the Rock ‘n’ Sock Connection, the Big Valbowski was caught red-handed lifting “Mr. Rocko” from a trashcan. Val then did something that has made some wonder about the “legitimacy” of the Big Valbowski. He stuffed Rocko into his wrestling trunks. Mankind, with an assist from GTV, exposed the scene and, in essence, Venus to the viewing world.

With GTV being stationed in the “right place at the wrong time,” this device has shattered many myths that may still surround the sports-entertainment industry. Put simply, there are no more rules, no more secrets. If a Superstar performs at a live television taping, he or she could be recorded at any time—especially when they least expect it. That’s what had made GTV so popular. GTV gives straightforward information–no BS or hyped promos–just the bare essentials are required and rooted out.

Events away from the actual venue have not deterred GTV’s producers from catching what needs to be caught. Just ask the Mean Street Posse–Rodney, Pete Gas and Joey Abs. GTV caught the Posse lounging around their hotel room, when Terri Runnels appeared wearing only a towel. The scene sparked speculation about Terri and her connection with the boys from Greenwich Avenue. All was made clear when Rodney called Runnels “a skank,” and ordered her out of the room.

Perhaps the biggest scoop for GTV was still to come. After a uniformed official told the Big Show his father had succumbed to cancer, GTV’s objective eye caught the Big Boss Man–who had instigated the sick rumor–paying off the official.

What will GTV do next? Citing these three examples, GTV has provided viewers with alleged sexual relations between Runnels and members of the Posse and alleged corruption–the same kind of thing seen every night on the national news. Like the ethics embraced by the mainstream media, nothing is sacred. Tradition has gone the way of the 1980s.

In the age of the Internet, the demand for information–any kind of information–has driven producers and writers to dig hard to bring viewers the latest, most accurate information. Those who do, climb the ladder faster and more aggressively than those who don’t. For instance, what is the use of writing a story for publication tomorrow when you can “get it all, get it now” with a click of a mouse?

That’s what GTV provides. It enables the viewer to get instant gratification from some of the most controversial  topics and storylines in entertainment. Mainstream media and newsmagazines are virtual masters of the technique known as “ambush broadcasting,” complete with concealed camera and body wires.

All of which leads to yet another question: what will the producers of GTV do next? Where will the camera be hidden and what conspiracy will become hauled into sharp relief? The possibilities remain to be seen. As was once said in the television industry–stay tuned…

What Is Paul Bearer’s Relationship to Kane and the Undertaker?

Repression. Webster’s dictionary defines “repression” as “To force painful ideas into the unconscious.” In psychology, repression is often the result of a traumatic incident in a person’s life. Those who treat the repressed say that it is merely a defense mechanism, an involuntary response. When the door is unlocked and the repression is erased, many wish that the facts they learn had remained hidden forever.

While the Undertaker may have repressed the details surrounding the fire that he believed killed his parents and his brother 20 years ago, he certainly has had to deal with those issues since Kane was unearthed by Paul Bearer. Surely locked deep inside the monster Kane are his own feelings on the horror he must have suffered. But what about Paul Bearer?

With intimate knowledge of the details of the fire coupled with his hatred for the Undertaker, the portly mortician has been strangely silent about his relationship with the red-and-black-cloaked monster. As circumstances surrounding the contact he has maintained with the believed-to-be-deceased Kane have never been explored, perhaps Paul isn’t so much repressing as simply hiding the truth he knows all too well.

When Paul Bearer joined the Undertaker in 1991 there was a familial bond. No one other than his manager would enjoy as close a relationship with the phenom. In time, the bitterness and jealousy that had lingered for more than two decades overpowered Bearer and he turned on “his Undertaker”. Why was Paul jealous? He was a tremendously successful manager who had achieved great wealth and security thanks to the Undertaker. Perhaps he felt guilty about the knowledge he had of Kane’s survival. Why did he not share that with Kane’s older brother? Maybe Paul bearer’s relationship with Kane is closer than we know.

Where was Kane for those 20 years? Apparently kept away by Bearer. What did the rotund reprobate hope to gain by keeping this secret? Perhaps he was afraid of losing Kane to his older brother. It would only make sense that family would bond with each other. But why would Bearer fear the loss of Kane? Perhaps the years put in while caring for Kane fostered a closeness that Paul didn’t want to end. That’s hard to believe, though, considering the sinister acts he has committed in recent months. So, why did the heartless mortician care about Kane in the first place? Obviously, Paul Bearer knows the whole story but has refused to comment. Numerous attempts to contact him and question his role in Kane’s life have gone unfulfilled.

A hotly debated topic on the Internet as well, the Paul Bearer/Kane relationship requires closer scrutiny. On the surface, knowing that Paul Bearer kept Kane hidden all those years, one has to wonder if their ties extend beyond rescued victim and benefactor. We know that Paul resided in the home of Taker and Kane, apprenticing under the boys’ father to become a funeral director. How long did he live in the home under this apprenticeship? Were he and the boy who grew up to become the phenom close? According to Bearer, in several interviews, no. If not, why not? We know about Bearer’s penchant for treachery. Did he commit some evil act while living in their home? Where was he at the time of the fire that killed the boys’ parents? Paul said he was at school. Has anyone ever checked his alibi? Time could be the truth’s enemy and Paul Bearer’s savior, in this instance.

The questions raised in this article need answers. As a writer and commentator for the World Wrestling Federation, I think it is shameful that to this point no one has investigated Paul Bearer’s role in the lives of Kane and the Undertaker. We have all taken the bulbous mortician's word as far as his knowledge of the circumstances. With clues scarce and subjects unwilling or unable to talk about it, finding the truth could be difficult.

Since Kane was burned in the fire, how did he fall under the care of Bearer and avoid the rescue personnel who must have been on the scene?Lies have been told by the mortician regarding his knowledge of the fire and I believe that Paul Bearer was there at the home at the time of the fire. How else could he have found Kane before the authorities arrived? This is not speculation, but deductive reasoning based on the facts as we know them. With this knowledge, more investigation is required regarding Paul Bearer and the first tragedy that claimed the lives of two people. 

Ever since Kane arrived in the World Wrestling Federation, I have had a gnawing feeling that his relationship with Paul Bearer goes deeper than we know. I also believe that Kane and the Undertaker are unaware that more pieces  of this puzzle exist. Both have suffered unspeakable pain and answers may lift the cloud of repression which has hovered over both men throughout their lives. If and when the cloud is lifted, it shouldn’t surprise the brothers to find that Paul bearer is the root of the evil which nearly destroyed an entire family.
