One of the only times that Shauna smiled in Season 2 was when she was alone with a corpse. Just wanted to point this out.

Throwback to an older post: another reason the original script, Misty being obsessed with Jackie instead of Coach Ben was better. According to the script, in sixth grade, Jackie was the only person to give her a card for Valentine’s Day, and that was why Misty was obsessed with her. That’s inherently more interesting than Coach Ben simply putting her on the team.

Instead of a simple, mundane reason, Jackie was the first person to make her feel like someone cared about her.

Jackie would’ve eaten people if it meant surviving for Shauna. If her dream had been true, and she had lived, she would’ve encouraged Shauna to eat someone, because she wanted her to survive. Jackie didn’t adapt because she didn’t want to, but we saw her do morally reprehensible things. She stopped Shauna from saving Van, and even after Van survived, she didn’t even seem sorry. Not because she’s a bad person, but because she would’ve done anything to keep Shauna alive.

Jackie was passively suicidal, but Shauna was the one thing tying her to the world. And she never wanted that tie to die before she did.

People seriously don’t think about this when I talk about Shauna making no real progress and just perpetually masking, but she became a married housewife. As in, within four years after the rescue, she became a housewife after probably being one, and in two years after that, she became a stay-at-home-mom.

Shauna had plans for a future. A career. She was accepted into a prestigious, ivy league college, and she was put into the role of a housewife. That’s partially why Shauna and Jeff’s relationship could never be healthy to me, she’s had to repress every part of herself and get no help, and for what? So she would get the privilege of spending everyday cleaning his shitty underwear and raising a kid that she clearly didn’t want?

I do think Shauna loved and still does love Callie, but she shouldn’t have had her. Shauna shouldn’t have had another kid until years of therapy had helped her with the trauma, but that’s the problem. Shauna’s only way to really change and become a better person was to have spoken to all of the girls together after a few years, and figure out how and when her mind lied to her, since it’s relatively obvious that her psychosis altered her memories, whether marginally or largely, that doesn’t matter.

For some reason, I heavily doubt that Jeff was thinking about her when he found out she was pregnant. He had no problem telling Callie about Shauna’s stillbirth in the wilderness and pretend it affected him when he didn’t even know, why would he be anything but ecstatic when he found out they were having a kid? Jeff doesn’t care about her wellbeing, not below a surface level. That’s just who he is. He didn’t care about Jackie, and he doesn’t care about her.

In conclusion? I don’t fucking like Jeff Sadecki.

I noticed something interesting while looking at Yellowjackets inspired CC for the Sims 4. Tiny meta analysis here, while I was looking at Sims made for Precrash Shauna, it’s extremely interesting that people that show a dislike for Shauna tend to make her face more hardened, with more angled eyebrows, a more generally irritated expression, etc., while people who express like for Shauna tend to make her eyebrows softer, her face more round, with a generally softer expression, which is more accurate to Sophie Nélisse’s portrayal of Shauna in the pilot.

It’s very interesting how people’s perceptions of a character can change how they make that character, and it’s very interesting how it can warp the appearance of a character to people.

You actually had some very good takes I hadn't ever thought of in Shauna's perspective, you have opened my eyes to understanding her more. With that said, I still think there is room to say that I can only sympathize with punishing herself so far. She's not only caused to death of a man she had an affair with for being paranoid, she has completely affected the way Callie sees the world and she struggles with her own morals. I do understand d her more after reading your points, but I still think you can hate her to some degree for not trying to get better for 25 years.

With that said none of them really moved on and got better, but I do still understand the view of disliking adult Shauna the most.

Callie shouldn’t have been born. While Jeff is a reminder of Jackie alone, Callie is a reminder of both of the worst moments of her life. Losing her best friend, and losing her baby. Seeing your kid at the same age you were when you went through this is probably perpetually triggering. Albeit mostly minor triggering, but triggering nonetheless.

While, obviously not as triggering as it would’ve been to hold Callie after she gave birth, or wrapping her in a blanket and thinking about the one that Lottie gave her. By far, Shauna is the one still stuck there. The others had free rein over their lives to do whatever they wanted—aside from Lottie, but that’s not for me to digress into now—and they didn’t grow either. They didn’t have the ability to leave it all behind, even after the 25 years of freedom, and after doing what they wanted with their lives, which again, is something Shauna wasn’t able to do.

For Shauna, the wilderness is a death sentence. She’ll die thinking about Jackie and her baby, whether that’s sooner or later doesn’t matter. Because we know for a fact that she’s spent the past 25 dying over it. I honestly don’t understand how anyone can hate any of the adult characters, since it took them a lot of pain and work to get to where they are, so they’re obviously not going to be the most morally sound.

And on the topic of Adam, he’s another reminder of Jackie. Not excusing her actions here, but what she did with him was clearly a way to revitalize her memories of her teenage years with Jackie. (Re: my previous post about how Shauna never stopped being a teenager.) The reason for Shauna suddenly being okay with killing him though, in my opinion, is mainly based on her having to butcher all of them. When she started getting sudden, clear, and triggering reminders of her time in the wilderness, it probably reignited that desensitized sense of killing, slightly more than it was already there, at least.

I wouldn't say I hate older Shauna, but I hate that she didn't take any of the 25 years to grow out of her trauma. You can sympathize more when someone is still actively in the trauma but still having made no progress other than masking 25 years later is what throws me off her older personally.

Shauna didn’t grow out of the trauma because her mind still recognizes her as being in it. She’s still haunted by Jackie, never got any support for it, and has to live with a man that makes her think about Jackie every day of her life. If she didn’t have a kid, if she wasn’t with Jeff, and if she went to Brown and lived her life as she had wanted to, I would agree with you. I would agree with you wholeheartedly. But that’s the thing, she didn’t.

She lives the life she thought her best friend would’ve, and she lives it unhappily, the same way Jackie would’ve. Shauna knew that Jackie wouldn’t have been happy with Jeff, so why would she be? She spent that 25 years punishing herself and drowning in self-loathing and a pit of being a mother, wife, and person without knowing how to be.

The reason she masks it is because that’s all she knows how to do. She doesn’t know how to grow on her own. The one person that she grew with is gone, and she never had the opportunity to learn how to do it without her. Shauna is the definition of inconsolable, and nobody recognizes that.

Saying you sympathize with young Shauna but “hate old Shauna” is stupid. What she went through doesn’t go away. She’s the exact same person, except hardened, and having gone through worse. You can’t sympathize with a character and then hate it when it ages, you’re just a hypocrite.

As was inspired by a tweet I saw of one of those gifs from scenes in the show, time for a second meta analysis related to Shauna and how the last and only actual substance of her character that we saw of hers was the teen timeline of the pilot.

Melanie’s acting is amazing, and it really accentuates my point if you pay attention. If you look at her mannerisms, and the way she fidgets when she’s uncomfortable? It’s childish. It resembles that of a teenage girl, because that’s what Shauna is. That’s what Shauna stayed as. She never matured, never got to mature.

The reason Shauna hates Callie is because in her mind, she’s still in the wilderness. She may not remember it, she may not—openly—act like she is, but she is. In her mind, she’s still that pregnant girl, struggling to navigate her way through life without her best friend, without the girl that was her navigator. Shauna never got to mature. She never got to age, not mentally. She stayed the same, in the most literal sense.

Shauna got used to aging with Jackie. Shauna got used to aging without being alone. When she got sick? She had Jackie. When she was sad? She had Jackie. And when she lost her? She didn’t have anyone. Despite being surrounded by people, she was alone. And when she was with Jeff? She was alone in every moment.

Misty and Jackie are two sides of the same coin. I mean that in the most literal sense. Both of them have so many things in common—referring back to my post that the original script being better than what we got, but I digress—that their chemistry would’ve been amazing, if they had put more effort into it.

They both had a desperation to be needed. They had this deep need to be recognized as important, but they never got it. Misty wanted to be popular, because she thought it would make people like her, and she thought she could get that by being competent. Meanwhile, Jackie was popular. Jackie was everything that Misty wanted to be, and she was proof that no matter what, nothing would’ve changed for Misty.

No matter how competent she was, no matter how helpful she was, no matter how kind she was, no matter how beautiful she was, it didn’t matter. People wouldn’t like her, no matter what she did. But that’s the thing, that’s part of why I love Mistyjax so much. Because Jackie would’ve. Jackie would’ve loved her for everything she was.

Small side tangent, Misty and Shauna were relatively similar precrash, Shauna wasn’t exactly popular, and she was shy, relatively reserved, and if she didn’t have Jackie, she would’ve been just like Misty. Mistyshaunajax (?) is the monarch of parallels, people just don’t look close enough to understand them.

The original script with Misty being obsessed with Jackie was healthier than what we got.

(Sudden meta analysis completely unrelated to Shauna, wow! Similarly, this is only an opinion piece, it's okay if you disagree.) The writers choosing to scrap the Mistyjax obsession script was—in my humble opinion—a horrible choice. For a multitude of reasons, but one of the biggest ones of them all? Having the eighteen-year-old girl obsessed with a grown man in a position of power over her. While I'm a Jackieshauna fan for life, I'm also aware enough to accept that in any piece of media, you should never cling to any specific ship and that ship only. If they had gone with the Mistyjax obsession script, it would've made the dynamics between Misty and all of the other girls much more interesting. Particularly, Misty and Shauna. Jackie would 100% still say the "secret girlfriend" thing, and she would probably entertain the idea on the backburner thinking it wouldn't do anything but help Misty, so the dynamic would've been similar, and more importantly, just as I said before and something I cannot stress enough, Misty having an obsession with the grown man while being eighteen—possibly even seventeen, depending on who you ask—is not in any way the best possible decision they could've made. An age appropriate and somewhat achievable crush on one of the first people that had ever been kind to her is inherently much healthier than having an obsession with, again, a grown man.

Maybe I'm stressing it a bit too much, but I firmly believe that the completely toxic dynamic between Misty and Ben was weird in an extremely avoidable way. You want a relationship that's unhealthy but not inherently toxic? Boom, an obsession that's also an actually somewhat achievable crush. To avoid a misconception, no, I'm not calling Ben a predator, none of these are directly about the characters in universe, I'm specifically addressing the writing decisions.

I despise how a lot of people have characterized Shauna as having constantly been a hotheaded, rude person, when practically the only actual substance of Shauna we’ve seen is the pilot, because otherwise? Otherwise, we’re looking at a pregnant teenage girl or a mentally ill woman. The stuff that she went through in the wilderness never left her.

Shauna acting how she did in the wilderness was not who she was. She didn’t have a hidden wild streak, she had jealousy and repressed feelings. She wasn’t a hothead in disguise, she was shy and eventually pregnant. Shauna might’ve been a different person from how we saw her in the pilot, but she wasn’t some crazy, angry girl that was just hiding it.

Similarly, people that genuinely believe all the things she said to Jackie in their argument and in the grocery dream wholeheartedly don’t understand her character. Shauna didn’t hate soccer, she played a position that required the most knowledge about soccer. Sure, maybe she didn’t have an interest in before Jackie suggested it, but that didn’t mean that she hated playing soccer. No, Shauna didn’t hate being called Shipman, I fear that’s sorta easy to deduct.

And, the most obvious one, no, Shauna was not having fun in the wilderness. A lot of traumatized people romanticize their trauma in order to cope, and as we’ve seen, Shana has never healthily coped with anything she’s been through a day in her life. The first few episodes of the teen timeline are the single time Shauna was herself that we’ve seen, and while that’s depressing, we saw that she was kind.

Shauna wasn’t a bad person from the start. She wasn’t even angry. She was just a confused teenage girl that was in love with her best friend.

Shauna’s original mask was a bunny. And we all know what Jackie’s “favorite” animal was. Overanalyzing and saying that it’s because Shauna loathed herself so much that she wanted to try and become someone that Jackie really would hate, because she knew that through it all, Jackie would’ve loved her anyway.
