He was peppering you with question after question, going over the schedule of next weekās big visit from the head of a rival corporation - one that Ward was hoping to buy out.Ā You didnāt normally go on walks with Ward, but he was adamant that the details needed to be hashed out, even if it meant accompanying you on your daily lunchtime stroll through the park. Which you yourself had been absolutely resolute about - by midday in the busy offices of the Rand Corporation, you always needed some fresh air.Ā
āSo youāve already finalized Mondayās dinner arrangements?ā he asked, swatting a fly away from his face.Ā
āYes, Ward.āĀ
āAnd the chef is aware of Mr. Steinās dietary restrictions?ā
āYes, Ward.āĀ
āAnd our driver is aware that Ms. Stein has severe asthma? Because when I say there canāt be any smoking, even while heās waiting for us to finish our meal, I mean -Ā ā
āWARD.ā You stopped short and Ward halted in his tracks, looking at you questioningly.Ā āHow long have we been working together?ā
Ward frowned.Ā āAlmost a year?ā
You nodded.Ā āAnd in that year, have I ever, even once, let you down?ā You crossed your arms.Ā
Ward sighed and shook his head.Ā āNo, not once.ā
You sighed.Ā āThen will you lay off, already? Everything has been planned, right down to the very last detail. It will all be fine!ā
Ward opened his mouth, undoubtedly to serve you with a scathing remark, when the sky suddenly split open with a loud āBOOM!ā and it began to rain. Hard.
āSon of a - !ā you yelled.Ā Was it even supposed to rain today? Maybe the ominously dark clouds gathering overhead should have been a sign.Ā
You took shelter under a large tree at the edge of the park. It hadnāt been raining for long, but you were already drenched. There was no way you could trek back through the park to your office through this downpour, let alone spend the rest of the day dressed in sopping wet clothing.Ā
āI canāt go back to work like this!ā you shouted over the deluge.Ā
Ward twisted his tie in front of him, wringing it out with a grimace.Ā āCāmon - my place isnāt far from here. We can dry off there.ā He glanced at the traffic outside the parkās entrance and sighed. āI could call a car, but itāll be faster if we just run.ā With a nod, he dashed back out into the rain, and you followed.Ā
Wardās apartment building was only a few blocks uptown. He probably could have made it a lot faster if heād been on his own, able to cover more ground quicker with his long stride, but he kept slowing his pace to make sure you were close behind.Ā
Once inside the building, taking the elevator to Wardās penthouse apartment, you heaved a deep sigh. You were completely soaked to the bone, shivering as the cold blasting from the AC hit your skin.Ā
Ward leaned against the elevator wall.Ā āDid you enjoy your fresh air today?ā he asked, his tone much drier than either of you currently were.
You scowled, āShut it!ā Ward just chuckled. Rubbing your arms for warmth, you tilted your head back against the wall and closed your eyes.Ā
Most of your coworkers wouldnāt have dreamed of talking to Ward Meachum in such a manner, but you were never intimidated by him. You were fluent in sarcasm and knew his bark was worse than his bite. And you were a vital member of his team, helping keep Rand running smoothly whenever Ward was out jet-setting all over the globe. So you felt no fear in snapping back.Ā Ā
āI offered to have sushi ordered in so we could discuss next week over lunch in the conference room, but no, someone just hadĀ to go for a walk instead.ā Your eyes snapped open as Ward continued. He stared up at the ceiling as he spoke, narrating to the light fixture hanging above.Ā Ā āWe could be warm and dry and full of yellowtail and tuna right now, instead of wet and cold and hungry.ā
You threw your hands up in protest. āHey, I didnāt ask you to come with me, you invited yourself.ā You turned to face him, a finger pointed at his chest. āBecause you were all worked up over something thatās already been taken care of. Maybe one of these days youāll learn to relax a little and trust me.āĀ
The elevator dinged, cutting off any snarky response from Ward. He exited and you trailed behind as he crossed the foyer of his very large apartment to the living room. Realizing you were both dripping, he gestured for you to stop.Ā
āHold on.ā He walked to a small room off of the living room, which turned out to be a bathroom, judging from the towels he carried back to you - large, surprisingly fluffy towels. You gratefully took one and began patting yourself down.Ā
āLet me get changed, and then Iāll grab something for you to wear.ā Ward headed down the hallway to a room at the end. You wandered slowly behind him, admiring the artwork that adorned the walls, when you noticed that heād left his bedroom door ajar. You couldnāt help but peek inside, wondering how big the room was (Wardās living room alone was twice the size of your entire studio apartment). You carefully crept closer to the door - then jumped back as Ward emerged, pulling on a tight red t-shirt. He wore a pair of grey sweatpants that hung low enough on his hips to give you a look at a rather impressive set of abs. Well, damn!
You managed to snap your face back into a blank expression as he handed you a small stack of clothing.Ā āI think these should fit you, at least well enough while you wait for your clothes to dry. Bring them to me and Iāll throw them in my dryer.āĀ
Raising an eyebrow, you retorted, āYou do laundry here? I assumed you were all dry clean only.āĀ
Ward rolled his eyes. If you had a dime for every time he rolled his eyes at you, youĀ wouldāve been the one with the giant penthouse apartment. āWhat did you think I was going to do with our wet clothing? Yes, of course I do laundry. I do wear more than just suits, you know,ā he replied, gesturing to his current outfit.Ā
You rolled your own eyes in response and headed into the bathroom to change.Ā
The t-shirt Ward had given you fit snugly. It was quite faded, the logo almost completely gone, but Ward had hung on to it for some reason. You wouldnāt have guessed he was one for sentimentality. The drawstring sweats were a little loose on you, and long, so you cinched the waist tightly and rolled the legs up enough so you wouldnāt trip.
āIāll get these started,ā Ward said, taking the wet clothes you offered him when you emerged from the bathroom.Ā āMake yourself at home.āĀ
Instead of taking a seat on one of his leather couches, you took a turn about the room, admiring the space. The room was decorated in a minimalist style, brightly lit from the wall of windows behind you, and so clean - the total opposite of your cluttered apartment.Ā
āShouldnāt take too long for your stuff to dry,ā Ward reappeared, a towel in his hands. He gently rubbed his longish black hair with it as he strolled toward you.Ā āYou know, what you were saying, when we were in the elevator...ā he paused, coming to a stop next to you.Ā āIām not the type of person who trusts easily. Iām-Ā ā
āCynical? Aloof? Frustratingly jaded?ā you cut in, leaning back against the frame of one of the floor-length windows that ran along the wall.Ā
Ward simply gave you a look. You laughed and motioned for him to continue.Ā
āI was going to say, cautious,ā he drawled.Ā āBut youāre right. Youāve never given me any reason not to trust you. So I just wanted to let you know that I do.ā He stepped closer, draping the towel over his shoulders.Ā āI trust you, y/n.ā
You cocked your head to the side as you stared up at him, his words ringing in your ears. You didnāt detect a single note of sarcasm in his tone. That was new.
Several strands of his hair fell around his face, framing his dark brown eyes. His shiny, thick locks looked so soft.Ā
āWhy do you always slick you hair back?ā you asked distractedly.Ā āYou should wear it loose like this sometime. It just needs a little...ā you trailed off as you reached up and ran your hands through his thick hair, tousling it between your fingers -
- and froze, realizing you were standing toe-to-toe with Ward, your hands buried in his hair, your face inches from his own.Ā
āI... uh... I am SO sorry,ā you stammered, pulling your hands away from Wardās head. āI donāt know what I-ā
āWait.ā Wardās hands closed around your wrists, gently tugging them back up.Ā āDonāt stop. That was... nice.ā He bowed his head slightly, and slowly, gently, you started to comb your fingers through his hair again.Ā
A low hum resonated from Wardās throat, a soft rumble that made your face flush. He closed his eyes, and you lost yourself in the sensation of his silky hair between your fingertips.Ā
The sound of the rain hitting the windows behind you fell away and you became aware of the pounding of your heart. Fingers still entwined in his hair, you took a tiny step closer.Ā
From between your hands, Ward opened his eyes and glanced at you, a small smirk on his lips. āTell me,ā he murmured, edging even closer, his hands slowly sliding up your sides, āhow do you feel about playing hooky?ā

āHow long now?ā Steveās voice carried to you over the buzz of the crowd. You looked up to see him shouldering his way through the throng, the collar of his coat turned up against the night airās bitter sting.
As he reached your side, he offered you one of the paper cups he clutched in his gloved hands. You took it with a soft,Ā āThanks,ā and glanced at your watch.Ā āShould only be another ten minutes, I think.āĀ Ā
Lifting your cup to your lips, you blew gently before taking a tentative sip. The hot cocoa was just cool enough to drink.Ā āMmmm, perfect,ā you cooed.
Steve smiled and you blushed. You were referring to the delicious drink, butĀ āperfectā definitely described the handsome man currently standing in front of you. Or the evening itself.Ā

Peggy couldnāt help but laugh at the bewildered look on Steveās handsome face.Ā
āWhat do you mean,Ā āhit meā?ā he asked incredulously.Ā
āExactly what it sounds like.ā she replied, standing up. Steve did the same.Ā āCome on, then. Do your worst, soldier.āĀ
Steve gawked at her.Ā āPeggy, Iām not going to hit you! Why - why would you even...?ā He trailed off, shaking his head.Ā
āItās very simple. Have you ever dreamed that you were falling?ā Steve nodded, and she continued.Ā āAnd in those dreams, have you ever actually hit the ground? Or did you wake up every time?ā
Steve tilted his head, his eyes searching her own.Ā āI woke up. Because...ā
āBecause you canāt feel pain in your dreams,ā she finished for him.Ā āSo. If you hit me, I will wake up back in my bed, completely unharmed. Well,ā she amended, reaching up to caress his face with one hand,Ā āat least, I wonāt be in any more pain than usual.ā
Steveās eyes flashed, the meaning of her words clear.Ā āPeggy,ā he said softly, stepping forward and placing his hands on her hips,Ā āIām not going to hit you. But I will prove to you that this moment is real.ā
Peggy smiled sadly.Ā āAnd just how do you propose to do that?ā
Releasing her hips, Steve walked over to where her phonograph sat on a large cabinet. He rifled through the stack of albums next to the record player.Ā āWhen you were, uh, resting, I took the liberty of looking at your music library. I needed to find the perfect song.ā He pulled one record from the pile and carefully set it on the player, then set the needle in place.Ā
āPerfect for what?ā she inquired, though she knew the answer.
The opening notes of one of her favorite songs filled the air. Steve turned and smiled, crossing the room back to where she stood. He held out his hand.
āFor our first dance.āĀ
She looked at his hand dubiously.Ā āSteve, I want nothing more than to finally dance with you, but I donāt see how this is going to clear anything up.ā
He sighed, but his face showed no sign of frustration. Only adoration, lips lifted in a soft smile.Ā āJust trust me, will you? Please?ā He extended his hand again. This time, she took it.Ā
With a small gasp, Peggy was spun into Steveās waiting arms. She let out the most un-Peggy Carter-like giggle. Steve grinned, and they began to sway.Ā
Never thought that you would be
standing here so close to me
there's so much I feel that I should say
but words can wait until some other day
It was heavenly, listening to the music as they twirled about her living room. This is truly the most perfect dream. Just as I thou-
āOW!ā Peggy suddenly shouted.Ā āThat was my foot!ā She glared up at Steve, ready to curse him out, when the realization hit her as sharply as the pain had.Ā āOH!ā Her eyes widened in shock.Ā
He IS real!
Steve dropped his head, a blush creeping across his cheeks as he smiled sheepishly down at her.Ā āSorry, Peggy. I did warn you that I would step on your toes someday.ā
āYouāre... youāre really here,ā she whispered, awestruck.Ā āAnd... you really canāt dance!ā
He laughed, a rich, husky sound that reverberated within her.Ā āI told you, I was waiting for the right partner.ā The arm around her waist pulled her in tighter, and she rested her head on his shoulder. Peggyās eyes filled with tears again.Ā
After a moment, she leaned back and looked up into Steveās eyes. He raised his eyebrows slightly in a silent question, and she responded with a smile. The corner of his lips twitched, and he lowered his head to kiss her again. She had so much she wanted to ask, and he had so much to say, but the words could wait.Ā

Peggy stirred, eyes opening slowly. She found herself lying on her back on her loveseat, a velvet cushion propping up her head. She sighed and stared at the ceiling.
It was a dream, after all. She sighed again. Just another in a long line. Honestly, itās silly to feel so sad about it!Ā
She closed her eyes. She knew that it was difficult to recall images from oneās dreams, but she was able to picture Steveās face so clearly. And when she inhaled, she caught the faintest whiff of his scent, as well....
āPeggy?ā
Her eyes flew open. Very slowly, she turned her head.Ā
Steve sat in the armchair next to her head. He smiled at her.Ā āI thought I heard you wake. Are you all right?ā Though he was smiling, his eyes were full of concern.Ā
Peggy blinked.Ā āI... to be perfectly honest, I donāt know.ā She sat up and rubbed her head.Ā āI fear I have hit my head and slipped into a coma, or something else dreadful has happened to me, causing this... this delusion.ā She looked at Steve.Ā āBut youāre so real.ā She reached out and grabbed his hands with her own.Ā
Steve raised her hands to his mouth. Soft lips gently kissed her knuckles and she felt tears spring to her eyes. Please donāt wake up now!
āI am real. And I have so much to tell you. I know itās only been a few days since...ā Steve paused, his eyes lowered.Ā āSince I missed our date.āĀ
Peggy hummed in affirmation, the tears in her eyes threatening to spill over. So far, this apparition was saying everything sheād dreamed sheād one day hear from Steve himself - ever since the day his plane went down.Ā
āBut for me, itās been a very long time.ā Releasing her hands, Steve took a deep breath. His bright blue eyes held her own.Ā āI just... god, Peggy, thereās so much I need to tell you, but right now all I want to do is - is this.ā Steve suddenly slid forward, pulled her into his arms, and kissed her.Ā
Oh god, how divine! The feel of Steveās strong arms around her, his broad shoulders under her hands, his delicious mouth on her own - Peggy could feel every single inch of him pressed against her. Her senses reeled.Ā
After a few moments, they parted, much to Peggyās dismay. Steve stroked her cheek with his thumb.Ā āDo you believe Iām real now?ā
Peggy smiled sweetly, and Steve grinned in response.Ā āOh, darling.ā She shook her head. āNo.ā
Steve blinked in confusion. āNo?ā
Peggy laughed.Ā āOf course not! This is all far too perfect. Itās a dream.ā
Steve leaned back, frowning.Ā āI knew this would be hard to explain, but I didnāt think Iād have to convince you that Iām real!ā He ran his hands through his hair in frustration. āWhat else can I do to prove to you that Iām here, right now, with you?ā He looked at her with eyes full of hope and her heart ached.Ā
Bloody hell. I suppose now I *have* to wake up - if only to help soothe my imaginary loveās conscience. How did I end up here?Ā
Peggy thought for a moment. How could she determine dream from reality? What was the one thing that would never happen in her dreams?
The answer came to her then. She knew what to do, but she also knew he wouldnāt like it.Ā
Peggy squared her shoulders, looking Steve straight in the eye.Ā

Peggy Carter was having the most wonderful dream.Ā
The funny thing was, she didnāt remember falling asleep. Sheād been sitting on the loveseat in her living room, reading over some files sheād brought home from the office, when she must have dozed off. Not too terribly surprising, giving how dry the writing in the debriefing could be. But she had to be sleeping, because what happened next made absolutely no sense.
Because how could Steve Rogers be at her front door?
She stared up at him, at a complete loss for words. Peggy Carter was many things, but speechless was not usually one of them. Yet she couldnāt speak, surprised to find Steve standing in the doorway in front of her. Steve, with his brilliant blue eyes and long eyelashes that kissed his cheeks as he blinked down at her, and those gorgeous lips that right now were forming words that she didnāt even hear.
Yes, I must be dreaming. But oh, what a lovely dream! He looked so real, and sounded real, the low timbre of his voice still rumbling on as she continued to gawk, and she inhaled and realized he even smelledĀ real, a woodsy scent that reminded her of the last time sheād seen him, when they had shared a kiss that she remembered so vividly she swore she could still taste him on her lips. She licked them unconsciously now.Ā
āPeggy?āĀ
āHmmm? Yes, darling?ā Peggy replied automatically, her eyes still drinking him in. She wanted to memorize every detail of his face before she woke up, likely any second now. She never napped for very long.Ā
āYou havenāt answered my question.ā He smiled, and her heart leapt into her throat. God, how I have missed that smile!Ā āCan I come in? I know itās a lot to explain, and I promise I will, but maybe I could tell you inside, rather than out here on your front porch?ā Steve looked down at her questioningly and reached out, his hand touching her arm gently -Ā
- what the bloody hell I FELT that - but that canāt be -Ā
- and it suddenly hit Peggy that she was not, in fact, dreaming at all.Ā
Then Peggy Carter did something else she never did - she fainted.Ā

Passionate, yes. Headstrong, no doubt. But rash? Impulsive? Never.Ā
Which is why he was quite confused to find himself standing at your door.Ā
It was well after midnight. The moon shone brightly from its perch in the heavens, watching the silent man who stood staring at your front door as if it held the answers he sought.Ā
Orm tried to recall how heād gotten there. Heād been pacing the floor of his room in the palace in Atlantis - Arthur had kindly allowed him to continue to live in the palace after his punishment had ended. (Though, of course, not in the royal suite. Not anymore.) Unable to sleep, he had traversed the length of his room over and over again until he decided he needed a change of scenery.
He left the palace, climbed into one of his small cruisers, and took off. The vehicle glided smoothly through the vibrant underwater metropolis until it slipped through the cityās gates and out into the open waters. The dark ocean seemed endless before him, but soon he reached a point where the water was too shallow to continue. So he swam from his cruiser, still not thinking about a destination, losing himself in the rhythm of his movements, until his knees hit the sand below. As he stood and walked across the beach, he finally realized that his restlessness had carried him directly to your door.Ā
Though the hour was late, your house wasnāt dark or quiet. The curtains in your front room window were outlined in a soft glow, and Orm could hear music playing softly inside. He stepped forward, tilted his head, and pressed his ear to your door.Ā
Came to you with a broken faith
Gave me more than a hand to hold
Caught before I hit the ground
Tell me I'm safe, you've got me now
Random images ran through his head. The first time he met you, on the beach, as he made amends and worked to clear the wreckage heād thrown at the surface dwellers - back when he believed they deserved to be punished. Before heād met you. The way you had smiled at him, your eyes full of such kindness, and offered to help. The first time heād made you laugh - the mellifluous sound of your laughter turning him into a fool. YourĀ fool.Ā
The first time heād kissed you.
And the last, when his sentence was over and he told you he was returning to his home.Ā
At the time, at least, he had thought that he was going home. But since heād left the surface, heād felt aimless, lost. Though he once again roamed the halls of the palace, surrounded by everything and everyone heād known his whole life, something had changed. HeĀ had changed. And his home no longer felt the same.Ā
Orm leaned against the door, deep in thought. He realized he was holding his breath, and in the stillness, he heard the sound of your voice singing sweetly above the music. He smiled.Ā
Could you take care
Of a broken soul?
Oh, will you hold me now?
Oh, will you take me home?
More than anything, Orm knew, he wanted to finally come home. Taking a deep breath, he drew himself upright, lifted his hand, and knocked.Ā
